For what it is, Project Hunter is a very solid go at making a stealth game playing in the Alien Franchise. Story: virtually nonexistent. You are an alien specimen that escaped containment, and your goal is to kill all enemies and evolve. I was somewhat annoyed that the opening scrawl was unskippable, but that's just a minor inconvenience. Gameplay: Solid, but limited. If you are familiar with the Alien Franchise, you may be perplexed that you start off as a small generic grub rather than the signature facehugger. As a stealth game, your best approach is to always attack enemies from behind, which is a one-hit kill regardless of your form. No particular surprise. The new abilities with each evolution is neat, though the explanations of each ability are not very clear. Something that needs to be worked on. Another reviewer touched on this, but the AI is extremely simplistic. After 10 seconds, the enemies return to preprogrammed routines rather than altering their behavior. This is a common failing of stealth games, one that requires fairly complex solutions to counter. I was disappointed that you can only parkour specific highlighted objects to reach different levels, and there was very little multi-level enemy grouping. There is a huge missed opportunity to include jump kills from higher levels, and even implement a pounce attack through the dash ability. Something for future development, perhaps? Graphics: Satisfactory, if unimpressive and basic. There are many recycled assets, which comes with the territory for most indie games. They function well, and that's all that is required. Final Thoughts: for a free indie game, this is an enjoyable stealth puzzle, if a very short one. There is real potential to improve this and make it into something special. I hope that the developers are willing to put in the effort to do so.

So, this game is an ok stealth game for the most part. It has a variety of hiding places, detection levels, lockdowns, with some progression in terms of abilities. These parts of the game and I quite enjoyed it, but there were some issues I noticed. For one, the UI has the look as if we're supposed to wear 3D movie glasses to play. It is somewhat readable, but it's still annoying to try to read the map like that. For the mechanic of hitting explosive barrels with your spit, the hitbox for the barrel is quite hard to read to the point where it's pretty much just luck. Then there's the big, game-breaking issue, when you die and go back to your last savepoint, all the enemies respawn. So, if you last saved in the middle of a room that you took a while to clear out, good luck surviving if you happen to die.
Game felt incredibly clunky and buggy, UI was painful to look at, ran with around 15 fps on my 1050. Progression system is confusing, and I often encountered game breaking bugs like one that allowed me to clip out of a vent very easily and walk past entire levels.
"Project Hunter" is I think some kind of student project, because it has many similarities with student projects that were published on Steam as if they were full PC games. But first, what is it? This is a thematic ripoff of Ridley Scott + H.R. Giger's Alien, with gameplay that blends stealth mechanics with a weak ripoff of Alien Breed. Right off the bat, Sega's decades older Alien vs Predator game already gives you the alien stealth experience, but from an immersive first person perspective, and as always, when a game is doing the same thing as a much older game, only worse, it's impossible to recommend to gamers. As for why I think this is a student project, well, it's all the same issues... it doesn't feel like a full, complete game, just enough to pass a course. It's riddled with bugs and lack of polish, so while it visually doesn't look awful, it plays awful. And just like student projects, this is completely unmaintained. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. Most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's usually some kind of monetisation, from nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, to any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 8 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Pass on this one. There's no immediate financial commitment, but there are thousands of more compelling games on the platform that will give you a lot more enjoyment for your time.
