Princess Maker 3 is probably my favorite game in the series, if you are interested in an actual review of the game itself you can check my review for the original steam release. This is a review mainly to review the quality of the "HD Remake." +The game runs significantly better than the original Steam release. It doesn't chug through menus, full screen works, and the game in general moves very nice and crisp in regards to animations. In fact, the game moves so smoothly, that said smoothness sometimes looks out of place when combined with some of the dated UI assets. Still, this isn't a bad problem to have. +The remastered portraits look great, but given the quality of the original game's portraits, they aren't very noticeable at a glance. +(?) Controller support, yay? +- The arranged music is whatever. -The translation has been untouched aside from a few words here or there maybe. I'm definitely seeing most of, if not all of the previous translations spottiness. This is a deal breaker for a lot of people so this needs to be known. I'm not too picky on awkward translations, but this is still a bummer to see no improvements. -Character sprites were for some reason not redrawn, and it feels like a missed opportunity considering they were always pretty ugly. -There doesn't seem to a fast forward button to speed through education and work animations which makes things take longer than they did in the original game. I may be missing something, but if I'm not, this is a real nasty quality of life feature to remove. -This thing is $30 (and $23.99. is still too much!) That is A LOT of money for a re-release in which the only meaningful feather in its cap is that the game doesn't run like ♥♥♥♥ anymore. This honestly should have been the version of Princess Maker 3 that was released back a few years back. Or at the very least, free for those that bought the original game near release, as again, very little has changed in this so-called HD remake. If you would like to experience Princess Maker 3, your best bet is to resist the temptation of fullscreen, save yourself a nice chunk of money, and purchase the original steam release. It's significantly cheaper now with the release of the HD remake, and is a much better value than what you are being offered here for $30. Oh, and you'll actually have a fast forward button. Neat!
NOTE: This review has a positive mark because of the game itself, not due to the remake features alone.
My attitude to this HD Remake is strictly neutral as I can neither recommend nor advise against it. Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ is one of the games that left an unforgettable mark in my mind along with other Princess Maker titles. I am a huge fan of raising sims and management games, so, yeah, no wonder! But at the same time, I see no reason why remake could not be released as a DLC for the original game instead of making a new one with a separate Steam page. Or why could not it be the only version of the game available if it is considered superior? Anyway, let me tell you my thoughts about the whole deal. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1952996470
Why is Princess Maker so good?
There are a lot of absolutely delightful features. Splendid artwork that is also unique for each title. Lovely music and voice acting. Very enjoyable if a bit repetitive gameplay that improved with each new part. An interesting story with a plethora of endings – your daughter can be anyone from the Queen to the bartender, from the creature of Darkness to the literal angel. All games also presented many nice characters; they can become your enemies, friends or lovers depending on the path you choose. There are so many things I would love to tell you about, but we are not currently talking about the Princess Maker series specifically. So, I will stop with my descriptions right here and move on to the remake and what it actually added to the original game. It is the main focus of my review, after all.
But what about the HD Remake?
Well, now we have come to a tricky part. If you look through my game library, you will notice that I have not played CFK Co’s version of Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~. I had a copy of this game with fan-made translation outside of Steam and completed it many years ago. When I was a teenager, actually (I’m almost 28 now, mind you). So, my whole evaluation is based on what I had at that time and not the current Steam version – I have no idea what particular issues it had or still has. However, I believe that I know enough information to compare the original game with its remake. First things first: translation. As far as I can see (and judging by my own experience with PM5), all CFK Co’s releases of Princess Maker titles have this problem. It is definitely not horrible or completely incomprehensible; do not even worry about it – you will easily understand almost everything. However, some sentences looks artificial or even strange. You can also notice occasional vocabulary mistakes and unnecessary punctuation – actually, there are a lot of full stops that look completely out of place. I am not trying to say that fan-made translation was perfect. Quite the opposite at times. But if this is a remake, why not address this issue and eliminate it completely? This is a very important part for a game with a lot of text, and many players do not look kindly on sentences with mistakes. Another problem: text does not always fit the dialogue box, which is partially caused by the font. At the same time, all these downsides can be easily addressed with several patches. If developers actually do it, this will give HD Remake a nice bonus point. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1952805476 Second, overall performance and visuals. On the one hand, both have significantly improved and this is the main selling point. I had to play my version of Princess Maker 3 in a small window as there was no fullscreen resolution at that time. Also, it had a very unpleasant tendency to cause havoc in menus – either they switched too fast or just freezed for a minute. This was particularly noticeable when I tried to save my progress. And do not even ask me about the animated parts! They looked wooden at one moment and rushed at the other. The game was still playable, of course, but boy was it annoying at times! HD Remake has definitely polished all these features, so now we have a version of Princess Maker 3 that is very enjoyable and easy on the eye. Bu-u-u-t…but there is always a fly in the ointment, right? There are still issues with character sprites that can disappear from the screen at some random moment while characters are speaking. This happened at least 3 times during my first playthrough. As far as visual aspect is concerned, remake looks better, out and out. I have absolutely no issues with pixel figurines of characters as I find them extremely cute; and both characters’ portraits and sprites are awesome. But that is it. There are not any new CGs or portraits, no new scenes or settings. And I cannot say that they UI has changed that much except for the main menu – it improved, yes, but not to the extent when you can say “wow! This is a completely new game now!”. Last but not least: gameplay. Nothing new. Not only this, but developers also removed a very important feature – I did not find any way to make events go faster. Previously, if you used the right mouse button, you could skip through studying and working. Now? I have no idea how to do it. This option is no longer mentioned in the Settings! It seems it is not even available anymore. So, judging by these points, I cannot but ask: why do we even need a separate release for HD Remake if this is basically the same Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~? I think that developers should have taken their time, updated all features they wanted to change, and then just released the better version as the one and only from the very beginning instead of making a separate title two years later. Or why not just make it a DLC for the already existing version of this game? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1952811595
Would I recommend this game and this remake?
All Princess Maker titles are very dear to my heart. They were a milestone in my gaming life, and I have been judging all raising sims by their example since then. I will be honest: I am quite biased when taking about this series and would never leave a negative review unless it was an extremely bad release – to the extent when it is unplayable or incomprehensible due to the bad translation. In case with Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~, we have a nice game with minor performance issues here and there, so there is no reason for me to bash it. However, if we speak about the remake itself, it rightfully earns a neutral mark – there is hardly anything new, and some pretty important parts (like skipping) were either removed or changed so that I cannot even find them now. Updated graphics look good and some performance issues were addressed, which is great, but we still have literally the same game (at least 90% of it). So, to cut a long story short, if you want an updated experience that looks prettier and has less problems with animations, then HD Remake will be up your alley. If not, then the original version will be good enough. P.S. People who wrote Russian description for this game: in what way is this raising sim “sensual” I ask you?!
More reviews on our Curator Page
日本語のレビューは下にあります。 The major game play is pretty much the same as the default PM3 on steam. You can find my original review here https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197998312005/recommended/650110/ This version basically supports higher resolution screen+slightly more HD+Bug free (so far). I did notice: 1) Sound is WAV only. No MIDI. I miss that nostalgic MIDI sound. The Arranged WAV version is too pop like for a relaxed game like this. It's too loud. 2) They took away the “Monthly Fee” vision off. You can no longer click on the income box during the scheduling UI to see how much it might cost you/gain per schedule you make. 3) You can’t right click the screen to start your scheduling. You must click the button to “activate” your schedule. It’s an extra hassle to click a button when right click is much faster to run the game. 4) You can no longer look at the Vacation illustration card to see which specific vacation is available at specific month. It’s just 1 card to say “Vacation”. You now have to memorize when you can go to the summer/winter month sea or when Autumn/Spring mountain month starts and ends at. 5) For a “HD remake” version, there’s only 1 sound setting. You can’t set the Voice/Music/Ambient sound separately. 6) You cannot mute sounds separately. Infact, you can't mute any sound setting cause if you want to mute, let's say the music, you basically need to turn off your sound bar.
As the title already says it all, this version is an HD remake of the game Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~, the third game of the Princess Maker series. I haven’t played the other version of this game yet, so I can’t really compare them with each other but can only write my experience with the HD remake. Despite knowing that this game is a little bit older, the series is just so popular that I couldn’t help but have to try it out as well. While it seems like a rather simple game at first glance, reaching the desired end turned out to be more tricky than I assumed at first. That being said, Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ is a quite challenging game but that only motivates the player to do their best to become a good father. In Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ you’re pretty much raising a girl and make her dreams come true. Although it doesn’t work out every time, being a lovely father is all that counts. You see, the girl is a faery that got turned into a human girl by the Faery Queen. The dream of this faery is to become a princess, although this road might be a rather tricky one. Luckily, you’re spending eight years with her, so there is plenty of time to guide her in the right way. And who knows, maybe she won’t become a princess in the end after all. You see, the story is rather simple in Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ and only serves the purpose of raising a daughter. Of course, as the player spends eight virtually years with her and sees her grow up, it’s already a satisfying feeling while you naturally grow attached to her in one or another way. There are small events spread through the playthrough and you can decide to attend special competitions. I noticed very soon that it’s not an easy task to win them, especially when playing a Princess Maker game for the very first time and a quite high number of stats is needed for it. However, overall I am convinced that it’s very hard to obtain every ending or scenario without the help of a guide. Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ contains mostly stat raising with a lot of different stats you can improve or decrease. Eventually, the stats will determine the outcome of this game. I liked that a high number for certain stats wasn’t the best outcome but some were better kept as low as possible such as the typical stress one. When your girl gets too little rest, she will catch a cold which obviously isn’t an ideal scenario. During the game, you can plan her schedule, even for a long time of period although most activities or lessons do cost money. Luckily, your daughter can even do part-time jobs to earn a little bit of money so she can continue to attend her lessons. But we also have our supportive father who helps her out at times, right? I’m not going to lie, Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ managed to make me feel quite frustrated because I didn’t get the outcome I wanted although sometimes unexpected events were quite entertaining as well and winning a competition feels satisfying after all. I found myself constantly trying to be the perfect father for my girl and to raise her the right way which turned out harder than you would assume at first. Being a parent is probably never easy, but I feel like, in the end, the whole effort is worth it when you can finally fulfill your daughter’s dream so you know you did a good job. I feel the need for addressing the translation as well for this rare case because that’s something that many people complain about. While I found the wording rather simple and sometimes some sentences may seem a little bit off, it didn’t bother me a lot. I am, however, not really picky with translations either but I’ve been still able to enjoy Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~. Since this game mixes visual novel elements with stat raising being the main aspect of it, I didn’t notice most small issues, although it’s definitely due to the story not being written as if it’s the main part of this game. Graphic-wise, Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ is truly beautiful for being such an old game. It looks even pretty in fullscreen with only the downside of the ratio being 4:3 although I have to admit that I really like that the borders do have a pretty design as well instead of just being plain black. Outside of the sprites and CGs, the game works with pixel style graphics, which I found adorable and even nostalgic. Of course, I didn’t expect the newest graphics, yet I am always surprised how lovely old designs can be and I don’t have a problem at all with it, but in fact, I found it even quite fitting to the Princess Maker’s theme. In addition to that, this game is even animated so you can admire your adorable daughter in pixel graphics during her schedule. Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ is a stat raising game that offers a lot of different challenges your faery daughter and you, as her father have to overcome together. It’s not easy to get your desired ending most of the time because this game has a lot of different stats which are needed for a certain outcome, however, this only makes the player want to go through it once again to find out what they could do differently so their daughter will grow up with an alternative future. That being said, Princess Maker ~Faery Tales Come True~ is probably a game that is enjoyable for those who enjoy stat raising games although it, however, might become a bit frustrating in case you’re not really a fan of it. (中文在底下) Disclaimer: I was playing the Traditional Chinese version, so description below might differ. I seriously couldn't hate more for this crappy "remake". Sure, the arranged music and "UI" are great, but other than that it's still a fricking mess. The translation is still wrong (at least for Traditional Chinese), the fonts are even worse, I can see the color code in the shop, the CGs contradict with the dialogues, sometimes the dialogues doesn't show up at all, even the transitions for characters are worse than something a fricking Windows 95 game could do. I don't know why these bastards even care to bring it under the sunlight again. Maybe the Switch version might be better? I don't know. All I know is that I bought 3 and 5 before, had a bad time, and now playing this for like less than a hour, I'm already so pissed off. Never buying anything from CFK anymore.
