🎬Gameplay Video🎬
https://youtu.be/1tE2xbVH20Q Plunder Islands is a 2D platformer modeled around the old arcade games of the past. Game play involves avoiding enemies whilst climbing and descending ladders and jumping on moving platforms, collecting all the coins, and escaping by plundering the treasure chest. Each enemy has a set pattern and speed as they patrol their areas, and some smaller enemies, like crabs, can be jumped over whilst taller enemies, like the officers, cannot. The levels where you can jump over enemies are a lot easier than levels with officers, as you have to wait for officers to move out of the way, whilst also timing runs very carefully, and it can be very tight. There's also usually a parrot flying around which seems to know exactly where you are going, or going to be, and because you are waiting for officers to leave a gap so you can climb a ladder, the stupid parrot turns up just at the wrong time and ruins your escape route! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3063925961 The game is quite difficult because of these factors, and the furthest I managed to get was level ten out of a possible twenty. There is a measly three lives, with no continues, so it is going to be very challenging to see any of the later levels. Personally, I would have liked a continue option as I would have enjoyed playing all the levels, or at least award us an extra life every ten thousand points to give us a fighting chance. There are a couple of bonus levels which will award an extra life but they rely on precision jumping and are quite difficult to complete. When I got to level ten and finally died, the game must be restarted and that leaves you with a sense of disappointment. There are no leader boards, which would have increased the replayability factor, only your own personal high score to beat. To achieve a decent score you need to complete levels as fast as possible as the bonus points decreases, and this makes it quite frantic, but because you cannot jump over some of the enemies, it proves to be a case of waiting it out, and often you will end the level with a zero bonus. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3063926080 The game occasionally suffers from annoying things like not being able to go up ladders unless you are perfectly placed, or going up and then going straight back down again, and the level design on some levels could be improved. I don't think any levels should have dead ends. There should always be an escape route. The most addictive thing about these games is that you can weave intricate escape routes with near misses, but if you get to the end of a platform and you can't jump or escape, that just feels like bad design. Some of the early levels suffer from this, and the later levels are actually much easier because there is always somewhere to go. The aesthetics and sound are great with colourful and quite detailed pixel graphics and a jaunty nautical theme tune which fits the game perfectly.
🍳Conclusion🍳

[b] Plunder Islands is a challenging 2D platformer, mainly due to the fact that you only have three lives, no continues, and difficult bonus levels. It does a decent job of emulating arcade games of the past, and is a fun experience for an hour or two. I think an online and friends leader board would be a great addition, as currently you only have your own high score to beat, but overall I would certainly recommend this to lovers of old school arcade games. No continue, casual to challenging gameplay. Superior for the old-arcade gamer.
This is a nice nod to old-school arcade games, which used to drain your pockets of cash as you had one more go, trying to reach the next level. The game starts off quite easy on the first level to ease you in, but then starts to become more challenging. Just as you think you've memorised the enemy patterns, that damned parrot which bounces around the screen will probably get you. In terms of modern arcade games, I think this compares well with Donut Dodo, which is one of my favourites.
I am having quite a lot of fun at the moment! At first i thought it would be a easy game but as soon as i played the first level i realised it is quite challenging. Its defiantly has a bit of a learning curve but i don't find it frustrating. It is a good mix of casual and challenging. I also love the graphics! The main menu is a bit rough but the actual game is beautiful! I am liking it so far and i would definitely recommend!
Fun, engaging yet challenging classic arcade game with banger music and really cute pixel art!
It's a nice little arcade style game. The creator was kind enough to give me a copy as I had provided them with some feedback during development. I considered buying it because I thought the price was good enough and I wanted to support them. But I didn't have enough coins in my steam account... Anyway, where was I? Ah. Fitting music. Cute graphics. Well balanced overall. It's rather challenging, so be warned! But, every time you die, it does get a little easier. I wonder if there is a way to gain hearts, though...
Classic arcade style of game. Can be really punishing at first until you get used to the controls and the enemy movement patterns. Sometimes it can be difficult to discern which parts of the level you can jump on. I also feel like finishing a level could replenish a heart to make it less punishing on the player if they make an early mistake. Not a whole lot to it, but good for 10 - 15 mins and worth the purchase at this price point.
