Beautiful game Inside and Out
To say this game is emotional, is an understatement. I cried, multiple times. I've dealt with serious depression and suicidal thoughts before, it felt exactly like this. But in what seems like a tragic ending, makes you realize that- maybe it wasn't as tragic as you first thought. Please, play this. I don't care if this isn't your kind of game. Play it now. Play it for me, and everyone else out there who struggles with depression. You'll see them differently, and you'll see yourself differently. And that's the key.
It is hard to describe what exactly i disliked, but it is a mix of it being very agressively showing you what its themes are, it exploring what depression is in a pretty clice and shallow way, it being messy and unfocused in its storytelling, and it having bad gameplay. Little nightmares 1 is one of my favorite games, and it does not have amasing gameplay, but having a tird or so of the game be walking in corridors with text made of blood repeting the same few messages, even when it is a short game, is still pretty weak. I belive that even games mainly focusing on story or worldbuilding shoud still have gameplay that is fun enhough that it dous not become repetetive, as the big differens between the medium of the movie, and the medium of the game is that games are interactive, and when the main thing about the medium you choose to tell a story with becomes an afterthoght, its generely not a good thing. And, when i say its messy i mean that it jumpes from scene to scene, and never lands on something, and i think that this is deeply connected to the fact that it is very symbolic in its messaging, withc leads to it jumping from scene to scene a lot, as its whoud to be extremely difficult to fill in the gaps between the metafors with metafors, because you whoud have to fill in the gaps between those metafors also, and so on and so on, unlike a tradional story that is not just metafors, but a fluid movement from point A (the beggining of the story) and point B (the end of the story). And also, about metafors, i belive that for a narative to be good, it needs to make sense when seen objectively, like if these events actuely accured, and that understanding the events thrue the lens that they symbolise something else shoud be merely a bonus for if you want to analyze it further. How this connects to this game is that it is clear that you are not meant to take anything objectively and that everything "means something", and i cant imagine how hard it must be to make a intresting narative, (withc i dont think this game has) where nothing just happens, but instead is not real, but that is meant to represent something that is real. And, with the clice thing, it is simply that it seems afraid to dig to deep into the protaganists mental state, whitc is made more obious by the thing i said about never landing on anything. (Also, just a little thing that i edited in, as i forgot it in the original review, but the game ending on a happy note felt kind of rushed and forced, like if it was a story meant to end sadly, but then it was changed for no reason.) So, if you have anything to say about this review, you can comment it. And also sorry for my bad english. And That is all i had to say.
This is the most impactful game I've ever played
Great game, very interesting, emotional rollercoaster the gameplay does get a bit boring though.
