As a busser at an Italian restaurant, Peppino feels pretty relateable
For their maiden title, Tour De Pizza has knocked it out of the park with the wonderful and zany platformer, 'Pizza Tower'. The visual style of this game is a beautiful mix-mash of 90's and early 2000's cartoons, tied together with the almost MS Paint-styled renders of Peppino and cast. The over-the-top animations are hilarious and help invoke the generally past-paced, nonsensical humour that is emblematic of that era of cartoons. 'Pizza Tower' is the kind of platformer that requires a lot of you at the highest level of play. The speed and platforming consistency needed can be brutal at times, but the reward for pulling off the perfect run feels more euphoric than anything I've experienced in recent memory. The mechanic of having to frantically run back to the start of the level at break neck speeds as guitars blare in the background keeps you on your toes and demands that you get comfortable with controlling the (in their words) fat bald Italian. Each level feels unique, with new mechanics that require you to change the play your play, however, they never detract, only add to the absolutely absurd list of moves you can pull off as Peppino. This was a platformer that was solely needed as a return to the classic 80's and 90's style of platformer, while being enhanced by the modern philosophy of game design. The music is incredible, with each track boasting catchy melodies that'll have you humming them for weeks. Despite having completed the game, I still consistently listen to the soundtrack and probably have more hours listening to the music than playing the game itself. For post-game content, there are plenty of additional challenges that will keep you occupied for a good amount of time, and the decently sized modding scene will ensure you have extra content by the community to keep you covered. With a soundtrack that will have you headbanging, and mechanics fun and fresh at every turn, 'Pizza Tower' does what it set out to do: create a fun, wacky and engaging platformer that'll demand a lot from you, but give even more in return. 10/10 I can't wait to see what this studio does next
