Fantastic platformer. a True Hidden Gem on Steam. EDIT: I had to change my early review, game is crashing a lot at certaint point. Sad
A neat action platformer. I think it does a good job of constantly adding more mechanics without feeling forced, and they surprisingly stay useful throughout the game which is something I find a lot of these kinds of games struggle with. It's one of those games you can beat in an afternoon and I think that it works perfectly for what it sets out to be. I found the humor pretty hit or miss, but that's a personal taste thing. I have some minor complaints, the last level feels like just a bunch of random hazards thrown without a great way to deal with it, sometimes you can't see what's coming up on the camera, and the hp potions don't refill on death which is extremely annoying for boss fights. Fairly minor issues though. It's a free game so no reason not to try it.

Very well made 2D platformer that gives you lots of options to bolster defense, projectile shots or sword attacks. Most levels unlock abilities that each new area is designed around. The story seemed kind of meh but everything else was smooth as butter, I would have paid a couple bucks for this.
SUPER
Thousands of retro 2D platformers are infesting Steam, and "Phantom of Zana" is just more pollution in a crowded market of terrible games. There are over 17,000 platformers on Steam, literally thousands (you can go see for yourself if you search for the platformer tag on the store, I'm not kidding). This pixelcrap platformer/brawler/hack and slasher looks and plays a bit like a ripoff of Zeliard, but without the RPG bits. And it's shorter. I often wonder if amateur developers look around before publishing games that are objectively inferior to games that have been around for decades, but I don't think they do. I mean, nobody would do that deliberately, would they? I think it should be pointed out this isn't the worst of the thousands of platformers on Steam... it's far from the best of course, this is no Silksong, but it doesn't completely suck. However, as always, there's no prizes for being the most handsome guy in the burns ward. The platforming genre is pretty much obsolete... just a tiny number of professionally developed platformers exist on PC and offer any real value or interest to gamers (Silksong, etc). This is nowhere near being as good as Hollow Knight or Silksong. Even without a price tag, it's easy to see why gamers ignored this in favor of modern, professionally developed 3D games. This is offering nothing new or interesting, so it's easy to see why this failed. This looks a lot like it was designed for consoles, but released on Steam instead by mistake. While this is on PC, it has all the hallmarks and deficiencies of a console game, from the clunkier than needed control scheme to the less than cutting edge graphics. There's 10's of thousands of PC games on Steam, and PC gamers deserve only the best. This might not appeal to many gamers due to the lack of PC-centric design. It's unclear why this never made it to the video game console appliances it seems to have been designed for. The amateur pixelcrap visual presentation here at best could have been an attempt to use "retro" as a crutch, a weak excuse to avoid admitting the developer wasn't capable of doing the job of a game developer this decade and creating cutting edge, high quality 3D visuals. While a lack of skill or funding is the explanation for this failure, it's no excuse. The end result of this incompetence is a game that looks dramatically inferior to professionally developed games. Terraria and Undertale succeeded despite looking crap, not because they look crap. This was made with the godawful "GameMaker Studio" construction kit/toolset, which is popular amongst amateur developers because it handholds you through making really crap 2D games that you can publish for $100 on Steam Direct. This lets you pat yourself on the back for pretending to be a real game developer, which explains why GameMaker Studio is responsible for so much ignored garbage on Steam. GameMaker Studio has never really been used to make a truly successful game, but that doesn't stop people from trying and failing. It's a particularly bad game engine that can only be used for making low quality 2D products. Like this. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as the old saying goes. Another reason this particular game wasn't successful. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Even as a free game, this couldn't find an audience. With a peak of only 10 players, it's clear the Steam community took one look and walked away. They literally couldn't pay people to spend time playing this. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a hard pass. There's no immediate financial commitment, but there are thousands of more compelling games on the platform that will give you a lot more enjoyment for your time. Finally, I'm here to help save gamers time by filtering out the noise and substandard games. If you don't agree with my assessment of the defects in this game, go ahead and download it... maybe you'll find the same defects to be as unacceptable as I did, maybe not. Even write your own review. Positive or negative, game reviews are here to help other gamers by informing their decisions on what to spend their time on.
"Phantom of Zana" is a fun action platformer that I enjoyed playing for the most part. For a free game, it’s very nicely made and offers a lot of content: 13 fairly large levels, a wide variety of moves, and quite a few enemy types. That said, the game has its good and not-so-good parts. Starting with the good, the controls are smooth and responsive. Moving around and slashing enemies felt great. At the beginning, the player can walk, jump, roll, and perform a horizontal slash attack. As the player progresses by defeating the stage bosses, she unlocks new attacks and moves: shoot, dash, air dash, upward attack, downward attack, grappling hook, slide, and more. These constant additions to the player's move-set kept the game feeling fresh throughout. The player can also be enhanced with upgrades. Coins collected in the stages can be spent at the in-game shop (accessible after beating bosses) to increase health, defense, and attack power. The player can also collect stars; 50 of them will automatically fill a potion bottle, which can be used anytime to restore health. This mechanic was incredibly helpful and helped me survive the more difficult sections of the game. Clearly, the player character and the upgrade system are well thought out. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the level design choices, especially in the later parts of the game. This brings us to the not-so-good parts of the game. The game starts off as a fairly straightforward platformer in which you fight enemies, dodge hazards, and collect stuff, but it gradually turns into a rather difficult precision platformer. There are numerous sections that can be cleared only if the player accurately executes a series of acrobatic moves one after the other while watching out for hazards that are placed all around. Making one mistake can send you back to the beginning of the section. These sections were extremely frustrating and sucked the fun out of the game. There were times when I was stuck in the same area for more than an hour and came pretty close to giving up. I eventually beat the game, but only after countless deaths and through sheer determination. I get that platforming challenges are part and parcel of this genre, but IMO this game overdoes it. It's a bit disappointing because all the cool abilities the player unlocks are mainly used for getting through the harder platforming parts, not for combat. I know many players would enjoy this type of precision platformer gameplay, but personally, I would have preferred if the game focused more on combat and a little less on the tricky platforming. With that out of the way, let’s talk about the rest of the game. The pixel-art graphics are nice in general, and the player sprites are especially well done. However, the overall art style felt a bit inconsistent, as if different artists had worked on the game's art assets. Another graphics-related issue is the lack of parallax scrolling in most levels. Only one stage had it, which is quite puzzling as the effect is extremely common in modern retro-style games. The music and SFX are nice, and the synth-based soundtrack was energetic and fit the tone of the game. That said, I probably would have appreciated it more if I hadn't been stuck listening to the same track for hours while repeatedly dying in tough sections. The boss battles are a mixed bag. They're fun to fight and not too difficult, but I couldn’t help noticing that many of them reuse the same attack patterns: they'll jump, shoot diagonally, then shoot horizontally, and then dash toward the player. The only variation lies in the number of projectiles they shoot. Another point to note is that the bosses do a LOT of damage and can finish you off in just two hits. Fortunately, the player can use health potions to replenish health mid-battle. In retrospect, I actually had more fun fighting the bosses than dealing with the tougher platforming sections. I even remember feeling relieved whenever I reached the boss room. The game also features two vertically scrolling shooter levels in which the player flies with a jet pack. These provide a nice change of pace from the main game. In conclusion, "Phantom of Zana" can be difficult at times, but if you’re patient and willing to go through some trial and error to get through the tougher sections, it can still be a fun and rewarding experience. For a free game, it offers a surprising amount of content and quality, so I’d gladly recommend it to fans of the genre. If the developer makes another game using the same character and abilities, but with a stronger focus on combat and simpler platforming, I’d be more than happy to pay for it. I’d like to end this review with a big thank you to the developers for releasing this game for free. Thanks for reading. (End of review)
I like it, it reminds me of Guacamelee where the platforming and the enemies along the way are harder than the actual boss fights. Thankfully tho the platforming isn't sadistic like in Guacamelee and I and my nephew actually had fun finishing the levels. The music is catchy and the dialogue was funny enough to make me laugh a few times. An overall good game, and I look forward to a sequel. There are a few game things tho that may be patched by now idk, when you get the slow fall you can sort of fly by mashing the jump button, making some of the clever platforming pointless, and also when you backtrack into a room you were already in, all the chest/coins reappear. Which is how old games used to be so idk if its intentional. But it's a fun game and would def recommend, especially for the price of FREE (Thank you for that btw). So give it a go if you like retro 2D platformers.
meh
Overall, a game with simple but fun gameplay. The mechanics of the game are very good. New skills are learned as the game progresses. the music is in harmony with the game and some of the dialogues were really funny. If you have free time and can't decide what to play, you can try this game.
