I regret all 975 hours of this game. It was moderately fun back in like 2018/2019 and I played it. I waited for QoL stuff and new areas (which at the time came slow) and when they did come it was not great after a week or so of grinding them. Drop rates for specific things are terrible and never going to be better than they were almost 10 years ago. Looking at the "newer" state of the game and the discussion forums and whats going on... its the same thing as before - Devs are only interested in pumping out new cosmetics to keep their smut subs happy. "heres a almost naked costume again this month for 19.99" but no actual gameplay improvements or quality updates. Every new zone they add follows the same path to gearing up as the one before - and you dont even have to know how to play the game because the bosses are so easy that even if 1-2 ppl know what they are doing, they will still kill it. Its not a good MMO - I wouldnt even call it a fun MMO. I only spent the amount of time I did because I was invested for so many years and I hate the idea of being invested into something and quitting and losing my investment - NOT this game. I was happy to leave and never look back. I regret buying anything toward this game / but I am also happy I will never give it another dollar too.

Unlike other reviews in this game that literally do not understand how to play this game. Here's an actual review who spent hours of this game and has some decent understanding of the game. The game is very free-to-play, no need to spend additional money on most things and every paid option always has a free-to-play alternative. And most paid options include player shop access (given some shop passes by the Battle Pass for free), Auto Selling junk items (also given for free by the Battle Pass), and Material Storage (also given for free from various sources). Those are noteworthy gameplay aspects that are behind Paid options and does not inherently hinder progress. Every other Paid options are cosmetics and enhancing showcase methods of your character's looks and fashion. Gameplay and Progression: Starting from scratch, you start with nothing until the game starts giving you free weapons at certain Level Thresholds. At the start, the story gives so much experience that by just going through the story (whether skip or not) gives you some initial meseta and enough experience points to start your endgame gearing and some temporary free gears to help you farm the actual content where the endgame gear can be farmed for free. Classes are playable and serviceable with varying degrees of success, and class balance are more or less balanced (with some nuance that I will not go into in this review). After that, you're pretty much free to choose what to do. After getting your Free gear, you are encouraged to actually upgrade to actual properly enhanced and augmented gears so you can farm more efficiently, make more money in less amount of time, and feed your fashion needs for your character. The free gear is strong enough to let you enter endgame content, but it is the weakest gear you will have until you use proper farmable weapons. Customization is endless, if you can think about it, you can do it. Please just don't do abominations where you have the sliders maxed out and with the ugliest character possible. I beg of you, I like to look at character fashions and I don't need to see another monstrosity just because. There is some Social aspect to this game, ranging from chatting with other players in Lobbies, partying with them in instanced quests runs and participating in Urgent Quests, limited time quests that occur at certain times of day where you can think of it as a Raid. Creative Space is there for you to create, well, anything you like. Minigames? You got it. Dream House? Possible. You want a venue for community events? Make it. Optimized Room layout for points farming? Heck yeah. There's a lot of things to do with this game, but don't treat it as your main game that you spent hours and hours with it and then complain there's nothing to do because there are a lot of things to do if you really like to explore what the game can offer. Don't go in this game, liking only one or two aspects of the game, and saying "this game has no content" because that's a stupid opinion and I am allowed to call you out for it. It is a game where you can have no commitment, come back to it after a day and still be able to catch up and farm relevant contents and do whatever you like. Oh and, those reviews who put so much blame to AI Chatbot, goes to show none of them understand what the actual feature is. Yes, I am also calling them out. And for those who are actually curious and knows how to read and understand, here it goes: They added an AI Chatbot called Mag AI that is there to serve as someone that you can talk with. Because contrary to popular belief, not a lot of players actually talk with other players because of a certain lobby space that is very questionable and has bad opinions so the general culture about that certain lobby space is to avoid it like the plague. Now, you are not forced to use this AI chatbot (if you can even call it AI), and you can opt out and not do the task to enable it. You can play the game normally without it and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If you do use it, just expect its answers to be as bad as current LLMs like ChatGPT because its not AI, its not going to solve your problems, its there for you to talk and mess around with. It has a very limited data and will not provide you gameplay tips and informational source as of yet. May or may not improve in the future depending on SEGA (or outright remove it if enough people cry about it). I won't put a TLDR because thats how you form really bad and misleading opinions so read this review if you have the attention span. If you don't, this is already a check of you whether or not you'll want to play this game. Gamers nowadays have so little attention span, they can't even freaking read anything.
Big pso2 player. On steam not so much but I played on the JP servers since around 2014. Spent thousands of hours in game. PSO 2 was amazing. NGS is pure dog water. They took all the good parts of PSO2 and stripped them from NGS. Its basically a glorified character creator with some combat elements and nothing to do. FYI its july 16th and their peak 24 hour players on steam is 914 players. Let that sink in. Thats how dead this game is. There must be one huge white whale making it profitable because thats a shame. Hell, even maplestory a 2d mmo has 12x the player count on steam charts sitting at 12,663. Let that sink in too.
it's crazy how an empty game like this can be close to 100gb.. Where is the content you're wasting my space for?
A nightmarish fever dream fueled by discord mods that certainly own anime body pillows of an ancient, and all powerful being that's 10,000 years old but takes the form of a 14 year old girl. If you liked PSO or PSU, pretend this doesn't exist. Unless of course you want to reinforce your love for the previous titles. It has been streamlined in a way where the only efficient way to play the game is join lobbies full of people who will be 300' in front of you one-shotting everything. Wasted days of my life hoping it would get better... Learn from me.
Great combat, beautiful character customization and a world that should be amazing to explore. Unfortunately, it somehow ends up feeling emptier than it looks. So much potential, but not enough reason to stay.
great customization and world, great art too....but very limited content and no way to really replay anything...once you reach the end of the story its all repetitive short event content and bosses, but the reason to run those is pointless because you need to do the highest end content to get the gear you need for that content...and its not like getting any of the gear will really change anything as it'll all be incremental increases to stats that oddly, you will never really feel any difference from. avoid it till maybe more real content comes but i don't see that happening.
A great game to play with friends. This MMO has the best character creator and social features of any game in existence. For a Japanese game, the slow grind is non-existent. Building gear and getting stronger feels convenient, reasonable, and fun. The movement system is also addictive, sometimes I find myself just jumping around the lobbies just for the fun of it. The classes and weapons all feel really solid and fun to use. They also function as a psuedo-difficulty system, where certain weapons favor ease of use, and other weapons allow for more skill-expression. Overall the game is stellar. You'll hear a ton of western players throwing tantrums and declaring that the game is dead for the umpteenth time, but that's the baseline for any western MMO player. Nothing is ever enough for them. And every time they get new content, they ignore it and say that the game has no content, or they jump through hoops to explain why the new content 'doesn't count'. The vast majority of players are on PlayStation and Windows Store and don't have the voice to quell the angry 1% of western steam players. If you want a better sense of the general consensus of the game, I recommend seeking out Japanese reviews.
I have not the SLIGHTEST idea... What they F they were thinking when they made this... ALL they had to do was make it EXACTLY like the OLD PSO was just updated etc and they didnt.. there was No dungeons no nothing i didnt understand the game at all pretty dissapointing
I quit. NGS had a lot of problems and as a long time fan of the Phantasy Star series as a whole as well as playing PSO on the Dreamcast, GameCube, and even playing on the JP servers for PSO2 Vanilla since 2012, I have to call it quits with PSO2 NGS and where it's headed. The AI Chatbot addition was enough for me to finally rip off the band-aid for NGS and not look back. Should I replay PSO2 again it will exclusively be Vanilla as that's where the majority of the fun I've had with this game, free of any updates with Gen AI implementation, otherwise, I'm busting out my GameCube and playing PSO. I spent a great deal of money on this game on both global and JP servers, even purchased a PS Vita for this game, imported a PS4 copy of this game. I adored this game, and it's shocking to find that I hit my limit with something I poured so many hours into. Will I be sad when the servers go down? For PSO2 Vanilla, yes. For NGS? Only a little. Thanks for the memories, Sega. And way to piss away all that good will by adding something the game never needed in the first place.
