I am probably going to annoy some people with this review… Why play this game? Well, I am the one writing this review, so surely it is I who should be telling you why, instead of the other way around. My issue is, while I thoroughly enjoyed the game, I find it hard to recommend to the average gamer. The game is unfortunately old and with a modern re-release already out, one which fixes a lot of the issues that an older game would have, why would you go back and play the older version? After pondering this, I can see two main reasons why: 1. You are a Persona/Talus fan and want to experience all that is Persona, in which case you probably do not need my recommendation as you have already purchased and intend to play this regardless of what I say. 2. Or you cannot afford the new game, or your system cannot handle it, effectively a physical limitation is preventing you from experiencing the newer version. There is another option, which I will get to later, but for now assuming you are in the latter situation, I owe it to give a proper review. Persona 3 Portable (P3P) follows the Player named character as they arrive at a new school for their second year of high school. Shortly after arriving they find themselves flung into a mysterious otherworld where they need to help themselves and others to survive and get to the bottom of what caused this whole “other side” to appear. Persona 3 is known as “the edgy one” for good reason. Characters swear, people die and things are largely depressing. Why this could be written off as early 2000’s edginess this theming results in the moments of levity that do exist being brilliant at breaking the dark atmosphere and the overall theming plot pacing or twists are rather well placed, even if some are at this point, rather clique. In terms of gameplay, it is a classic Persona setup, that is to say the aforementioned JRPG combined with a Visual Novel Life Sim. While these things should not work together, the fact they have made 5 main line games with multiple spin-offs and remakes indicates that it is a winning formula. The game focuses heavily on time management and has a good gameplay loop, increase status to improve your relationships/unlock new ones, to improve your combat abilities, the rewards from which are spent to improve yourself faster. My main complaint is unfortunately the lack of modern sensibilities, menu navigation, combat feeling linear, nothing is a deal breaker in and of itself, but it does leave the game feeling clunky when compared to more modern games. A Persona game would be nothing without its characters and there are a lot to engage with and grow attached too. If I attempted to describe each of them, this review would be significantly longer, so I shall refrain, but this does introduce the third type of person who would want to play this game. That would be someone who wants to experience all of the content which was cut from the remake. P3P has the option to play as male or female and this goes beyond a simple cosmetic change, the story and characters available adjust as well. The story is only minority effected, but the characters for each gender are largely different with some never even making an appearance in the others route. This adds replayability as there is always content you will not see if you just play the one path. Atlus does deserve some props for attempting to bring some of the content from the female route into the male one for the remake, but many characters who were exclusive remain absent from said remake. It is a shame knowing that the female MC will never be seen outside this game and her exclusive content will remain lost as well. The final thing I want to note is the voice acting and music, both of which are fantastic. The music has stood the test of time, with many of its tracks being used by content creators meaning you can be sure to at least recognize one or two songs. The voicing acting is also stellar, I just wish there was more of it, but considering the game was released in 2006 for the PSP, I am just grateful we got what we did. As one can see from the thumbs up above this, I do think the game is great. If you want to give the game ago know you have my blessing, however for the large majority of players I do not think this is a game you should play, at least of their first Persona game. When I first tried playing this, it was just before the remake’s release and I could not get far into the game, before the clunkiness of the systems turned me off it, and I had played multiple Persona games up to then. It was only recently when I had the Persona itch that I could get myself to sit down and actually give the game the attention it deserves. I ended up being rewarded with this great game, but someone shouldn’t have to slog until they end up enjoying it. Unless you are a fan, want to see everything Persona has to offer, or are just nostalgic for a bit of old school gaming, rather look elsewhere
p3p always felt like it was a good time before i played reload but i cant bring myself to play it again after reload, it was the first version of persona 3 i played and the story really spoke to me at that time in my life, I had just moved away from everything i knew at the time thinking i was gonna go into 11th grade when i moved but i was told that i could either drop out or restart highschool. I didnt wanna redo 9th and 10th grade so i dropped out, became very depressed and apathetic to the general idea of life and this game helped teach me that i need to get out and meet people and the enjoyment i felt back before i moved can be achieved again. it helped me be able to reach out and meet new people.
I first want to address the fact that this specific port of the game to modern consoles and steam was a complete mess. The sound quality isn't great and all of the backgrounds were ai upscaled (ew), however it is still persona 3 portable and any version of persona 3 portable is good. P3P is in my opinion the best persona game atlus ever made and this is after playing persona 3 (FES, Reload and Portable) 4 (Golden) and 5. The femC social links are absolutely amazing and not just the new ones: Yukari, Mitsuru and Aeigis are probably 3 tiers higher (on a tier list) than their regular counterparts (we don't talk about fuuka). The new soundtrack is also really good although I wish you could mix and match songs becuase i'd rather have mass destuction than wiping all out but all the other songs are upgrades. The opening movie is the best they've done imo, although pursuing my true self and burn my dread are close behind and the new scenes are a lot of fun (persona 4 references etc). That being said this should not be your first expericnce of persona 3, purely because of the visual novel format and I highly reccomend FES as your first experience (yes, over reload) and this as your second playthrough since persona 3 has the worst NG+ anyway. 10/10 persona game tho, I wish that they ahd taken more care with the port and let's hope that they combine portable and FES one day (ok that's cope)
