Persona 3 Portable

While the female protagonist and QoL enhancements are welcome, P3P is a flawed way to experience Persona 3 as it has balancing issues, somewhat ugly art, and some stripped down systems compared to P3 FES and P3R. Pros: - Female Protagonist Route - QoL Enhancements - Core Gameplay - OST Mixed: - Story (Simplistic and drags until latter half of the game) - Art (upscaled art doesn’t look that good compared to original P3P on PSP) - Boss Design (Damage-spongey and not always balanced well) - Social Links (Good but overly basic compared to its sequels) Cons: - Game Balance - Dungeon Design - Guide basically required to 100% Replayed on PC. Overall, P3P should only be played if you’ve played Persona 3 already, preferably Reload. This is due to the fact that the only reason to play this game is to experience the (admittedly, small) changes that the female protagonist brings to the story. The cut down experience in navigation, no cutscenes, heavily-aged dungeon design, grindy nature of the game, somewhat unappealing art style between the 2D and 3D, and story being barebones until the latter half, severely limit the game. However, speaking positively, this does have classic Persona gameplay and some good bosses, even if they can be overly long at times. It’s worth mentioning that if you don’t care to grind on normal or harder modes, there are options in place to play through at a more rounded-out difficulty curve. I’m not typically averse to grinding in RPG’s but the way it’s needed on Normal mode (at least in my experience; I can’t speak for everyone) to beat certain bosses if you’re progressing at a normal pace, really brings the game to a crawl. Still, at least you can increase the experience gain to mostly remove that issue. 100%’ing the game is a bit tedious as well since finishing the compendium is rough without some sort of completed list to know which personas you’re missing and it’s more or less required to use a guide for the secret challenges in the game. Fortunately, P3R exists for modern gaming (although even that’s lacking the female protag). Even though it may cost more, just play that version. I only recommend P3P if you have a desire to replay P3 to hear the new music and female protagonist route. This is still Persona 3 at the end of the day so it’s still solid JRPG with today's standards. 7.0/10. Edit: Got rid of a typo.

Persona 3 is an amazing game, however this version doesn't really hit the mark. The heavy use of ai upscaling causes most textures in the game look like someone spilled Vaseline over the entire game, and audio quality is atrocious, sometimes being even worse than the psp game it has supposedly remastered. In addition, the visual novel presentation of P3P often leaves some scenes feeling empty or confusing as many visual cues which originally guided the scenarios go completely unaccounted for. However, with use of mods the game can become a bit more palatable, but if you just want to play Persona 3 on pc, play the remake or use PCSX2 to emulate P3Fes using a legally obtained copy.
