Desktop Pets is a simple little desktop companion that puts small pets directly onto my screen while I am doing other things. The main idea is pretty straightforward. I can watch the pets wander around, interact with each other and mess about while I use my computer normally. I can also hatch eggs to collect different pets and place toys around their environment. I like this kind of game because I do not have to sit there and constantly play it. It can just sit in the corner of my screen and give my desktop a bit more life. The pets are definitely the best part for me. Their random behaviour makes them feel a little less like static decorations, since they can explore, play and interact with one another. I like the idea of having several pets around because it gives me something different to watch whenever I glance over at the desktop. The collecting side also gives me a small reason to keep checking back, especially when I can hatch eggs and add something new to my collection. I also like the simple customisation. I can add toys and change the environment to make the space feel more like my own little pet area. It is not a huge decorating system, but I do not think it needs to be. The whole appeal is being able to set something up quickly and then let the pets do their own thing. There are also achievements and rewards, which give me a few extra things to work towards instead of the game being nothing more than an animated desktop background. The biggest problem for me is that there is not a huge amount of actual gameplay. Once I have seen the basic pet behaviours and started collecting the pets, there is only so much more I can do. I am mostly watching them rather than actively controlling them, so I can see the novelty wearing off after a while. That is not really a flaw with the concept itself because Desktop Pets is clearly designed to be something casual and relaxing, but it does mean I cannot treat it like a traditional game with lots of progression or things to master. I also think the free to play design is something I have to take into account. The core game is free, which makes sense for something that is meant to sit on my desktop, but there are in game purchases and chance based purchases connected to the experience. I do not mind having optional extras in a small desktop companion, but I would rather the collecting side stay enjoyable without making me feel like I need to spend money to get the pets I want. The presentation does a good job of matching the idea. The pets are cute, colourful and designed to be noticed without completely taking over my screen. I like that the game is more about having something pleasant in the background than demanding my attention every few seconds. There is also very little commitment involved. I can open it, leave it running while I work or play something else, check on my pets occasionally and then close it whenever I want. That makes it quite easy to fit into my normal computer use. Overall, Desktop Pets is a nice little desktop companion that succeeds because it keeps things simple. I like watching the pets interact, collecting new ones, giving them things to play with and having something cute moving around on my desktop. The lack of deeper gameplay does limit how long I can stay interested, and the extra purchase systems are not something I particularly need. Still, I think the basic idea works well for what it is trying to be. It is not a game I would sit down and play for hours, but as a relaxing little companion that adds some personality to my desktop, I think it does a good job. Rating: 7/10
