Along with a little spirit orb, your guardian wisp sent by your ancestors, that keeps you company you’ll travel to reach the peak of the spirit world as the gods made you an offer, an offer to join their ranks. This is where your journey from the mortal world to the spirit world will begin. Which in all honesty got partly on my own and partly from the store page as it wasn’t that clear in game and I wish we would get a bit more in the game itself. I do wonder about the lore book that I may pick up at some point, but that should be an addition to the in game story, right?
Gameplay:
The gameplay is very basic and simple, yet satisfying. With a few puzzles where you push your spirit fire power to a lamp. At the time of writing this review, unknown if more content will be added, there are two colours, blue for air spirit and green for the earth spirit. Depending on which lamp you may have to swap colours. You can also take it back out of the lamp. Picking up an item and putting it somewhere to unlock and progress the rest of your journey is also part of the puzzle. Besides the few puzzles it’s mostly exploring and enjoying the beautiful scenery or going on a search for the collectables. I have a short first look video for you over here if you wish.
Visuals:
Breathtaking. It was like being submerged into a painting of ancient Japanese times. If you’re not a fan of this you can also turn it off. I liked both, as it is visually a very beautiful scenery and world.
Sound:
Soothing and relaxing, it accompanies the beautiful scenery very well.
Controls:
Seemed mostly fine. Jumping can be a bit iffy sometimes but nothing you can’t work with. It wasn’t always super clear how to do things and it wasn’t till the start of my second playthrough that I noticed in the left corner that wisps tell me more about the controls. By then I figured out that under settings and then controls you can see how everything works for either keyboard, xbox or playstation controller.
Issues:
For one puzzle in the beginning I couldn’t make the jump so I had to cheese it a bit by jumping on the lamp and then to the platform leading to the cherry tree. As mentioned above jumping could be a bit iffy but also over jumping was a thing for me. Either I didn’t find my way back or there are a few points of no return, which was a shame since exploring is the biggest part and I wish I knew those where points of no returns. Loading time sometimes scared me thinking the game was stuck. If you’re holding an item you cannot drop it and you’ll have to figure that one out first even if you spot another item and the solution nearby. Things weren’t always that clear, I was simply not spotting them so it made me feel like I was stuck sometimes. Maybe a tiny little bit of hand holding would’ve been welcome. The ending felt very abrupt and odd which gives that unfinished feeling. Motion sickness, which I got rid of a bit with adjusting the field of view but not fully.
Closing word:
What a beautiful, relaxing, soothing game to play through. Even if I had the feeling I was stuck here and there, I always managed to figure it out eventually and the little dingle sound felt rewarding. Surely it can use some polishing and patching here and there but for the low cost the game is at the moment of writing my review versus the content that I got, especially enjoying the beautiful scenery and the exploring, I can say I loved it. Loved it enough that I struggled through with my bit of motion sickness cause I really wanted to reach the end. The end does bother me cause it feels like an abrupt stop and it makes me wonder if more content will be added to the main game or in the form of dlc or a second game as I wouldn’t mind revisiting this world. This is probably also a good time to admit I had fun trying to break physics just for fun, trying to get up places in weird ways etc, but hey I was having fun so you can’t blame me. So if you don’t mind it being simple and basic, look past the few small issues that may be resolved in the future and just run around while doing a few small puzzles then definitely give it a try as they have a demo in the store. After waiting for the release, Path of Kami: Journey Begins had finally arrived. I have to say that it... Didn't quite reach my expectations. Don't get me wrong, it's cute, calm, pretty, and casual but what it lacked is enjoyment. It's a very short game which I wouldn't suggest is right for the price paid. The whole concept is summed up into one theme: collect items, solve easy puzzles, and abrupt enemies that have no real purpose other than to stabilise the ending being introduced out of nowhere.
똥싸다 끊은기분인 겜 : 힐링용
Before playing this, try these instead: (1) Spirit of the North, OR (2) Lost Ember. This game is very similar in nature to those other two, however this one is incomplete (hence "The Journey Begins"), with little to no instruction. The game ends at a very odd spot, almost like the story wasn't fully fleshed out. You don't complete the journey, you end up resting while partway through your journey to the top of the mountain. The key mapping is also not meant for controller. If you DO decide to play this, and you're using controller, keep in mind you will need to use a keyboard when switching from the powers (AIR and EARTH) by tapping 1 or 2 on your keyboard. I had to look into the controller mapping and do a deep dive on the community forums to understand this was an oversight on the controller and this isn't really explained anywhere at all. Again, I came to this after having played Spirit of the North and Lost Ember. Those other two games are honestly, so much better just even based on the fact that it's a fully fleshed out story in comparison to this one. I'm glad I bought this one on sale for $3 because otherwise I'd be kind of disappointed having paid more for what is pretty much an hour and change of game-play for a game that abruptly ends... with little to no guidance throughout, save for what other players have prepared as resources here on Steam.
With 1,300+ reviews, make sure to follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
You play as Kazeyo, a recently deceased wolf that must navigate the mortal and spirit world as you take a long journey to the mountain where you’ll find the spirit village. To help you on your journey you have Wisp, a guardian spirit who will guide you as you travel. You begin in the area known as Evergreen Seas and to progress in to new areas and to reach your destination you’ll have to complete a series of easy puzzles. You will have to find various spirit keys around and then place them in certain places after which you’ll receive an item which will then allow you to progress in the game. At times you won’t be able to proceed but nearby will be some Lanterns, using spirit fire on the lanterns to light them, they will then move in to position or raise platforms allowing you to reach new areas and continue on your journey. Scattered around the areas there are items and spirit fires for you to collect, there are also some hidden areas which you can find. These don’t really give you anything they are just for collecting and achievements. There are some sacred fountains here you can replenish your spirit fire should you run low of it, which shouldn’t be very often. These fountains can also be used to save your progress and should you die then you will respawn back in the last fountain you took a bath in. The game is very short, I completed the game in less than two hours and that is with me getting lost in what I was doing. I had collected some spirit keys and had been shown where they unlocked but upon me visiting the cable car I couldn’t activate it, so I was stumped. After running around the place thinking I must have missed something, I then left the game and had a bite to eat but upon my return to the game and revisiting the cable car I notice one side of it had opened. I can’t remember seeing it open before, I could have just missed it or it might have just been bugged. Either way it allowed me to travel to the next area. The graphics of the game look great and there is a photo mode in which you can take photographs. In photo mode there’s a bunch of filters and other stuff in which you can play around with before taking a photo. You can look at your photos by looking at them in the gallery. There isn’t that much in the game to do a part from walking about and a few puzzles and later in the game a few enemy spirits which you can get by with ease by running past them. In the settings there’s options for Video - Resolution, Full Screen or Windowed Camera - Controller and Mouse Sensitivity and Camera Field of View. Sound - Sound and Music Volume Sliders. Language - English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, French, Russian, German, Polish and Korean. Advanced Settings – Paint Distance Effect, Shadows, Reflections, V-Sync, Texture and Shadow Quality (Low, Medium and High) and Anti-Aliasing. Controls - Key Binds for Keyboard & Mouse and Gamepad. Positives + Nice graphics + Easy to play + Full controller support + Has achievements Negatives - Very short - No cards currently Help Kazeyo a recently deceased wolf navigates through the mortal and spirit realm as he travels to the spirit village in the mountain. 6/10
Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB!
I have to explain one thing as for me the experience was meh at best and freaking annoying at worst. First of all, the game kept crashing, over and over, I even joked about the aesthetic of the game while publishing one of the numerous screenshots I took where the screen was black and apparently I could do thing, exept playing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3358304229 The issue with that is it makes the game far more tedious than it should. It's a very short game, however dealing with the constant crash, lag and black screen makes it last longer (and there is an achievement which increase the playtime as you need to AFK 2 hours). I probably should add over here that there is no support for any other keyboard than QWERTY. Good luck switching your power with an AZERTY, because it doesn't work and you cannot change the controls either, you need to set the game in windowed and attribute it EN keyboard for it to work. Aside these problem, every surface of this game is slippery, you keep slipping and it generally lands you in the water. When you don't die from that, you also can die from the hand of enemies going faster than you which are immune to anything. They have eyes behind their back, you never lose the aggro and they generally kill you in two hits. You have to appreciate the fact that some puzzles are hidden in areas where there are monsters roaming around and ready to cut you into pieces. The story isn't that deep, I actually think there is no story ? How did that wolf end there instead of the spirit realm ? Why is there is a "Hey, listen" orb explaining to you that you're not in the spirit realm and giving you information about the area you are in. So the story is about a wolf needing to go from A to B. That's it, you're good to go. Since there is no interaction with the wolf it becomes a whole nothingburger which you can skip as it has no influence whatsoever regarding the game and you also have to deal with Captain Obvious comment, "look there is no water here", yes, I know, it happens I have eyes to see that there is no water, thanks a lot. Anyway, if you really want to play that game, get it at a -90% sale. And get ready to crash over and over with fatal errors..
Game's forte is the visual presentation. If you want a relaxing, casual experience I recommend Path of Kami. As this is only the first part of the journey I hope to see the end in a sequel. The game let me play only in 720p although a RTX 3060 should be more than enough to drive a low-poly style game in 1080p and above. Disclaimer: I won the game in a giveaway.
Design: ⚈⚈⚈00 | 3/5 I liked it, kinda reminded me of Okami at some point. But the wolf movement actually really nice. Difficulty ⚈⚈000 | 2/5 Not difficult at all. Story ⚈0000 | 1/5 Not too much to offer story wise. Gameplay ⚈⚈000 | 2/5 Expected much more from this game if I want to be honest. I tought it will be a bit more challenging, but I guess the main focus was to make a cozy, relaxing game. Additional note: Recommending to people who likes: a relaxing cozy game, where you don't need to do much you can just wander around as a wolf. Not recommending to people who: likes challenging gameplay and want more action. Also, why is there an achivement on steam to nap for TWO HOURS?? That was annoying to see..
