It's like Slay the Spire and Scrabble had a baby that was raised on pulp fiction. If any part of that description appeals to you, you'll probably have a good time.
not completely abandoned, but they said the game would be finished in a few months back in august 2023 (the initial estimate was 6 months in january 2023). it's now july 2025, 14 months since the last update, and their silence was only broken by an announcement asking for money for the sequel. absolutely disgusting (and their gonna increase the price of this as well if it ever gets kicked out of early access), and sadly people are ponying up like they have money to burn, which would still be a better option. a shameful way to handle a first (and second) project, if that were the case, but they already had a bunch of similar releases, one worse than the other. the first paperback went free after a while, still not worth bothering with, and the second isn't a whole lot better. there are so many similar games now, stop giving money to these people.
An interesting card/word-based game featuring lots of variety in equipment, enemies and card powers. Pros: * Highly interesting concept, creating words in such a way as to use card powers most effectively * lots of content and variety in both card powers and enemies * Very replayable, with short game times * Compared to the physical version, all card/stat mods are tracked automatically, making gameplay smoother and faster. * Despite being a word game, optimum words tend to be 4-6 letters in length so not too much of a barrier if you feel your language skills sometimes prevent you from enjoying word games Cons: *Progress can be frustrating, as you rarely *add* cards to your deck, in favour of having to remove an existing card each time, which is not always what you want to do. *Additionally, given that battles are not revealed ahead of time, it is possible that you may not have the skills required to defeat certain enemies. Until you learn how to build a set of skills which can deal with differing scenarios, this can feel like a roadblock and is ultimately depending on which cards/items are offered throughout a run. *It's a 1.3gb install! Even if every image in the game was an uncompressed 4k bitmap it's hard to imagine any of the content in this game requiring that kind of space. I know storage is cheap these days, but honestly this just feels like bloat. *Even with the automatic tracking of stat changes, it card be hard to understand which modifiers are being applied in which order
Wow! This is such an awesome word game, much better than just plain Paperback. I was somewhat disappointed that Bookworm Adventures was taken from Steam but this Paperback Adventures game makes up for it! Still hoping Bookworm Adventures 1 and 2 comes back to Steam somehow. However, I like everything about Paperback Adventures, the soundtrack, artwork letter rack and overall design of the game. After learning the basics and rules of Paperback Adventures, I'm really enjoying this game and I get better each time I play it! I am glad to have spent the money on this game. Hoping more Paperback Adventures titles will follow, I would gladly purchase those as well. These are the kind of games I prefer casual word games with an rpg spin. Orbi's Chronicles, Bookworm Adventures, Paperback Adventures, Highrise Heroes: Word Challenge, Alphabear: Hardcover Edition, and Scrabble Journey are currently my top favorite games at this point.
We still play the crap out of the original Paperback, both digitally and in card form, and this is a really solid follow-up with more of a combative, action vibe. I'll tell you what, it really benefits from having a digital version, too -- more going on, more stuff to keep track of, which makes having the computer handle all of that for you extra sweet. Heartily recommend!
Note: Paid for this game as part of the kickstarter for the physical board game. This has been an incredible help to learning the board game, and REALLY enjoy it. I've only played a few hours (I haven't had time!), but I can see how this would be easy to pull out a few games / rounds. The biggest issue some people might have is the fact that it is a very small deck (for a deckbuilder) - you will only have so many cards, and as such, will be rotating through them regularly. With a word-based game, that translates to potential repetition of words - yet you're eliminating that word by removing a letter from your deck, forcing variety. Love it!
A fun roguelike word game. I own the physical game and also this digital version and both are quite good. There are some minor differences between the physical game and the digital version (e.g. which card you can activate in a word, fighting 9 enemies versus 6 in a full game, etc) but otherwise the two are very similar. There is a good amount of variety and replayability with multiple characters and a slew of items and enemy types. It's a pretty solid game with the only downside being that playing a full 9 rounds does take a bit of time if you try and do it in one sitting (fortunately it does auto-save as you go.)
Ultimately, I think this game delivers on a lot of what it promises. I did NOT buy this as part of the kickstarter, and coming from similar games like Slay the Spire and Inscryption I think this system has a lot of really great things going for it. It's an easy recommendation for people who like both word games and Slay the Spire, and is a nice start if you haven't played a ton of word games before: A typical hand will only contain 4 point-scoring cards, so you don't need to be constantly coming up with 9-letter words unless you're aiming for that strategy. Pros: + Genuinely unique spin on the boss battler card drafting game full of new ideas that feel good to play + Art and overall polish look great! The team clearly put in the effort to add incidental animations, thoughtful UI layout, and other things you don't always see in board game ports. Cons: - Not much. There are some strategies that feel overly powerful, such as musket plus double damage, but everything else feels well geared towards a series of difficult but winnable encounters. Wishlist: - There are some features I saw in the physical game that I wish were here: - Being able to see what the opponents will do multiple turns in advance - I really like the vowel mechanic people have mentioned from the physical game, and wish we had it here instead of the level 5 "random consonant" difficulty level. - Rather than a slider, I would have preferred to pick my own difficulty modifiers. Modifiers like the constrained wildcard and limiting end-boss healing are more exciting than "more boss health, less player health"
You can think of it like "Scrabble the Spire." Spell words with the cards in your deck to gain attack and/or defense points to defeat enemies. So far, the game is pretty fun. McGuffins(powers) and items are fun and add a lot of variety. The problem is, it seems a bit unbalanced. I finished my first run with Ex Machina and I actually had a lot of fun doing it. I have then tried the Damsel and Plothook. With the Damsel I have struggled to even get past the first few stages. Her starting letters just have almost no attack or defense values so it's very hard to keep up. Also, some enemies seem much harder than others in the same tier. I'm on the fence because most runs end in frustration when it seems there was no better way I could have played the cards. The enemies get stronger very quickly but the power level of your cards really does not. The basic gameplay is fun and satisfying when you're not getting slaughtered by punishing enemy mechanics. They are actively updating so hopefully some balance gets ironed out. What I really love is the developers are active in the Discord community and have already added some items as voted on by community members.
Buggy, one-note gameplay.
