Packed Train

A simplistic timewaster, in which you can just disconnect and mindleslly play a form of match-three tetris. If you're bored and have time to waste, this mini-game can keep you occupied for hours.

Packed Train is, well, very likely to be an asset flip. At face value we can see "Packed Train" is a mobile app (that isn't on app stores, immediately raising suspicions) where you drag and drop Tetris blocks onto a flatbed train carriage. Pretty shallow stuff and beneath gamers valuable attention right there, but there's more. See, the game itself is internally titled "Farm Train" by the Polish developers, Ice Code Games, but that's not this game. Huh. Is "Games Games" an alt account for Ice Code games? If not, then we know this is an asset flip. There's also the matter of the game manifest containing Unity assets from the asset creator, ShaderQuest. Of course the "developers" behind this credit neither ShaderQuest or Ice Code Games, so it's pretty obvious something highly suspicious is going on. As always, if it looks shady, it probably is, and my advice is always for gamers to be cautious with their purchasing decisions and stay safe. There's a lot of unethical developers out there, pushing bad products onto gamers to make a quick buck. Even if this isn't an asset flip, it has all the same qualities as asset flips, it's shallow, looks like it wasn't designed for PC, feels more like a demo or tutorial than a real game, etc etc. That alone is enough reason for this to be unrecommendable. Well, here's my boilerplate stuff for all the defects that affect this game, if you should decide to take it seriously: From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the mid 2000s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but it doesn't seem to have made it to the app stores. It's unclear why this was put on Steam instead of the app stores it seems to have been designed for. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes "Packed Train" might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Packed Train is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.

Packed Train is a simple match'em game. You need to place the shapes in the play field and matching three or more of a colour clears that part of the field. The goal is to match the required amount for the level without running out of space on the field. They have thrown in quests to provide more to do like matching a certain amount of a given colour or not using a certain colour during a level. There is also a timed mode where the carriges of the train move after a short time and you need to match the required amount before you run out of carriges, it unlocks after level three of the zen mode. The main zen mode is just that and trying to acomplish the quests is what keeps the game play fun for the first hour. Without them it is pretty easy but it looks like soon after the first hour you begin to run out of room and need to play more carefully. It is just before this point that the game introduces ice blocks. These, when played, clear two blocks from the play area giving you valuable room but using one will often invalidate a quest. The game is fun for an hour or so and is priced appropriatly at $2. Yep, it's cheap. Yep, it's kinda fun for a while. Yep, it's cute...in a weird way. Haven't seen hide nor hair of the Steam Leaderboards touted on the game's page. Seems to be only one, yes, a whole ONE puzzle to complete via words even though in the game there's a place to click where you can supposedly see your comleted puzzles...as in plural. Two questions asked in the forums (whew, that's gotta be a record low for any game that's been out for 3 months) and neither with a shred of response from developers. Can a developer answer in shreds? No idea. If there was a rating for MEH I'd choose that.
