Oxygen: First Breath developed by Turquoise Revival Games and published by GrabTheGames and UpgradePoint presents itself as a prologue, but it carries enough mechanical weight to feel like a complete, if condensed, survival city-building experience. Set in a desolate future where breathable air has become a scarce and managed resource, the game wastes no time establishing its central tension: survival is not guaranteed, and every system you build exists to support a single fragile lifeline. From the outset, it distinguishes itself by framing growth not as expansion for its own sake, but as a calculated risk tied directly to whether your colony can sustain the oxygen it depends on. The gameplay revolves around constructing and maintaining a settlement centered on an oxygen-producing core, which functions as both the heart of the colony and its greatest vulnerability. Every building you place, every worker you assign, and every resource you gather feeds into a tightly interconnected system where imbalance can quickly spiral into collapse. Food, water, energy, and population are not just parallel concerns but interdependent pressures that must be managed simultaneously. This creates a steady, underlying tension that persists even during quieter moments, as players are constantly aware that a lapse in planning can have immediate consequences. What makes the experience particularly engaging is the way environmental threats are woven into this management loop. The world actively resists your efforts to stabilize it, introducing hazards that disrupt production and force reactive decision-making. Sudden temperature drops, toxic atmospheric conditions, and geological instabilities all demand preparation rather than improvisation. The game rewards players who think ahead—stockpiling resources, spacing out critical infrastructure, and building redundancies into their systems. This dynamic gives the gameplay a rhythm that alternates between controlled expansion and urgent crisis management, preventing it from ever becoming too comfortable or predictable. Progression is handled through a combination of technological research and outward exploration, both of which expand the colony’s capabilities while introducing new challenges. Unlocking advanced structures improves efficiency and opens new production chains, but often comes with increased demands on your already strained resources. Meanwhile, sending expeditions into the surrounding wasteland introduces a layer of uncertainty, offering valuable rewards at the risk of losing personnel or encountering unforeseen complications. This balance between internal development and external risk keeps the gameplay loop engaging, as players must constantly weigh short-term stability against long-term growth. Despite its strengths, the limitations of the prologue format are evident. The game operates within a fixed timeframe, which means that just as systems begin to mature and strategies deepen, the experience comes to an abrupt end. This creates a sense of momentum that is never fully resolved, leaving players with a clear understanding of the mechanics but without the opportunity to push them to their limits. Some systems also lack full transparency, requiring experimentation to fully grasp how certain efficiencies or penalties work, which can occasionally lead to frustration, especially for players who prefer more clearly communicated mechanics. Visually, the game strikes a strong balance between bleakness and clarity. The post-apocalyptic setting is conveyed effectively without sacrificing readability, allowing players to easily interpret the state of their colony at a glance. The interface is clean and functional, supporting the game’s emphasis on management without becoming overwhelming. While the audio design is serviceable rather than standout, it complements the atmosphere without drawing unnecessary attention away from the core gameplay. In the end, Oxygen: First Breath succeeds in delivering a focused and compelling survival builder that prioritizes tension and efficiency over scale. It demonstrates a clear vision, combining resource management, environmental pressure, and gradual progression into a cohesive whole that feels both challenging and rewarding. Although its limited scope prevents it from reaching the depth of a full release, it offers enough substance to stand on its own and leaves a strong impression of what a more expansive version could achieve. It is a thoughtful and engaging experience for players who enjoy strategic planning under pressure, even if it ultimately feels like the opening chapter of a much larger story. Rating: 8/10
