"Owold : A simulation distortion" is a complete train wreck of a game from Turkey. Part asset flip, part amateur dumpster fire, all bad. The story revolves around humanity's immersion within the multiverse following a pivotal event, years later. You play Olaf, a character lacking physical limbs, tasked with navigating a world distorted by simulation errors, uncovering these flaws to potentially save humanity. At least, that's how the developer describes this garbage. Really, it's a first person "adventure" game where you wander past some flipped assets and laughably bad low poly "custom" garbage, some awful music that you can't turn off, and just suffer. Really, playing this trash is true suffering. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game assets are fairly mediocre/low quality which fits with the idea they weren't developed by the game creator... they look like they're "just reasonable enough" to go on sale as part of an asset pack. The issue of asset flipping aside, ultimately the quality of these assets is low and low quality always makes for a less than optimal gaming experience. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. Bewilderingly, while the game includes proper audio controls, they don't work!! So you can't turn off the annoying game audio (it's not very good), you'll need to alt+tab out and stop the game sounds using the Windows sound mixer. This is obviously not okay and it's unclear why the developers chose not to bother testing this basic feature. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 110,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 110,000+ games on Steam? "Owold : A simulation distortion" is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 14,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Note: Due to the very poor quality of the game, all the comedians came out of the woodwork. The vast majority of the reviews for this game are joke reviews, such as "this game cured my cancer, saved my marriage, changed my life" etc. Because most of the reviews are as insincere/mocking the game, and if you removed the fake/joke reviews the game would have a markedly different review score, the positive review score for this game should be disregarded.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer response here is a complete insult to all gamers everywhere and an affront to basic common sense. The developer DEMANDS that because this was made by an untalented youth who has no idea what he was doing, utterly incompetent, it should therefore be given only positive reviews. What utter BS. This is insulting. It doesn't matter if this game was made by Hellen Keller with her hands tied behind her back, it's garbage. But it says so much that the developer doesn't care at all about what gamers might value or not; All this guy cares about is himself. Unacceptable, sheer, insulting arrogance from a failed developer. And failure this is. SteamDB does not lie. 2 concurrent players is beyond just "bad", gamers took steps to avoid this garbage. And even more insultingly, the developer is trying to cash in on this garbage. It gets worse. The developer has the audacity to blame my high end rig on his incompetence and failure to even test basic features like audio controls or changeable resolution. And yet he has the sheer gall to breach Valve guidelines to whine that he's being treated unfairly somehow because he dumped failed garbage onto Steam and didn't get participation trophies for making Steam worse with this crap. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this trash to anyone.
This game made me want to get a lobotomy.
