Playing status: 100% achievement Grindy Achievement(s): No. Optional Achievement(s): Yes (1 achievement). Difficult Achievement(s): No.
Intro
Unlock The King 3 is the third title of Unlock The King series, a puzzle game that is based on chess. It uses chess pieces and its movement mechanics, along with Rubik's Cube-styled rotateable, tiled platforms. Your job is to rotate the tiled platforms to make sure that you can direct the king to the goal. It has 50 levels with various mechanics. Pros: - 50 levels - Simplistic and easy-to-learn gameplay - Atmospheric music Cons: - It's hard to differentiate between bishop and knight if you look at them from above - The screen rotation can give problems to some people Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you like simplistic, short, and easy puzzle games, buy this game.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
The game uses 3D models with a lot of gradients to give atmosphere to the level. Everything looks neat and clean to give you as much space as possible to focus on the level. The lack of words, along with simplistic symbols in the options also contribute to the look and feel of the game. It's easy to get focused and immersed in the game just from the music and visuals alone.
The Game
Gameplay The gameplay uses a combination of chess and Rubik's Cube. Chess pieces will be scattered on the level which can be moved the same way as it does in chess. The platform that they are placed on, however, can rotate like Rubik's Cube if you place a chess piece to a certain tile. It is your job to make way for the king to the goal. It offers 50 levels in total with new mechanics as you progress. You need to know how to differentiate and move chess pieces to play the game. There is no tutorial or whatsoever that can help you to learn them in the game at all. You don't need to be a chess expert to play it though - the game has its own rules in addition to the chess mechanics. For starters, there are a different number of chess pieces in each level and they are not played on an 8x8 board. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2370325759 New mechanics will be introduced as you play. Despite the lack of words, it's easy to figure out how they work. The last few levels introduce the concept of invaders, which must be defeated by the king if they reach a certain spot. I like how the game gives us an option whether to defeat all invaders in the level before finishing it or just focus on finishing the level while ignoring the invaders. The latter option will make the game easier and faster to finish, although you still need to do some groundwork to make sure that the invaders don't claim any spot and screw your run by preventing it from reaching the king. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 1.5h. I admit that I didn't try to finish the last few levels by defeating all invaders. I just figured it didn't matter since you can finish the level just fine without it. As for the difficulty, the game is easy to beat. The latter levels might give you trouble with the size of the map and chess pieces, but it's easy to figure out how to solve them once you know what to do. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2616265408 Problems I'm not used to the up-down rotation in the game - it will move the screen up when you drag your mouse upwards and vice versa, and there is no option to reverse the rotation. It also can take time to switch levels that are far from the ones that you are in due to how the interface works. Moreover, you can only undo your latest move - doing far from it will require a complete restart of the level. Lastly, it can be hard to differentiate between bishops and knights from above.
Conclusion
Unlock The King 3 can give a good time for those who want easy, simple puzzle games. There is a bit of chess logic that you need to learn before playing, but those who don't know can always Google it beforehand. It doesn't take long to understand the new mechanics, and the length is perfect for those who just want a quick break. I can always recommend it to those who enjoy these kinds of games. King chess puzzles are back again in good quality. Added some more puzzle elements. A bit easier than part II (less 3D based moves) which is nice move. Turn the puzzle with right mouse button, zoom in-out with mouse scrolling. Difficulty progresses correctly, teaches new tricks on the way. All 50 tasks solved without any guides. Except level 44, checked that because based on earlier info I misunderstood win / defeat conditions.
Unlock the King 3 brings an overall more streamlined improvement over the second entry but introduces annoyances that don't fully redeem the trilogy.
UTK3 builds upon the foundations laid by the first two entries with generally more even puzzle logic and fewer difficulty spikes then the second installment. The first game in the series remains the best so far and is still the only one I would fully recommend. The new turning blocks are the star of this iteration. They can only be switched once with the corresponding piece, so careful chronological planning rapidly becomes mandatory. An enjoyable addition to combined puzzle mechanics. The biggest offender is an unwieldy camera with inverted vertical axis controls. This is especially weird considering the other two games controlled normally, and with no option to change this setting I consistently struggled with camera controls. Level 31 introduces the Invader, an enemy piece that seeks its own destination once reachable. It must be eliminated by the King before he can travel to his own and rest. Also a nice addition when used sparingly. There are many puzzles where the invader can simply be made unable to reach its tile, thus avoiding the extra steps in getting rid of it. It can be fully ignored unless it lands on its home tile. There are also lots of unused areas in later levels, not sure if to throw people off guard or because simpler solutions exist against intended ones, but the end result feels like wasted space and not fully satisfying solves.
Positive

Shares many of the good qualities of its predecessors
New puzzle elements add variety (turning blocks, invaders, etc.)
Fewer portals make better use of this feature from UTK2
More even puzzle logic and fewer difficulty spikes

Negative

Shares many of the limitations of its predecessor
Unwieldy camera with inverted vertical axis controls
Even fewer puzzles overall (including many of the same tutorial levels)
Undo still not always functional (but more so than in the second installment)
Invader turns the screen dark and makes color-coded blocks harder to read
Lots of unused areas in later levels
Unlock The King 3 is yet another mobile app copy+paste from serial shovelware pushers, Minimol Games/Mens Sana Interactive. This time they've copied + pasted a free mobile app to try scam PC gamers into paying for something you can get for free on iPhones. This is a basic Chess themed pathing/placement puzzle game where you swipe your finger around on your iPhone screen to move Chess pieces to "Free" the king piece. This is the third time they've dumped this free mobile app onto Steam as a paid product, in an attempt to extort PC gamers. Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected in the general public reception. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the game only ever reached a peak player count of only 5 players. That's right, only 5. This is a pitiful enough number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam, the overwhelming lack of interest in the game is remarkable, but also to be expected. This complete and utter rejection of the game from gamers should be a keen information point for anyone considering buying shovelware like this. Gamers just didn't take this seriously, and for good reason. Once more we see greedy mobile devs trying to scam PC gamers. On Steam, this is $1 USD, on app stores, it's free. Mobile devs must learn PC gamers are not here to be gouged, and can't be expected to pay a premium for a free mobile game just because it's been lazily dumped on Steam. This is unacceptable disrespect for PC gamers. Because this can be played free elsewhere, and because of the other defects, it's impossible to recommend. Who do they think we are?
Not bad. It balances complexity well. A bit janky and easy to cheese, but worth a dollar. Just don't get the first two games.
This one has some interesting mechanics introduced, but by not being able to see in three dimensions, makes it impossible to solve the puzzle or really, know what to do. I still like the first game. This and the second are way too ambitious with poor execution. It's a shame really.
