I've been playing some found footage-like walking sims recently so I really wanted to like Owlman. As soon as we begin the game a text tells us that what we are about to see is found footage content and it is related to 4 missing people. Tapes are involved but are we going to find the tapes or we are experiencing the tapes themselves? We are then in a parking area where we either decide to walk or get into our car. I didn't know we could use the car since it is already in a parked position next to some public toilets. So first I walked to my destination (a house) but for the next time I used the car. It barely makes any noise and the dashboard looks static. Well, it is alright since this is an indie game. But the camera is not in line with the driving movement so you have to manage your viewpoint with your mouse while driving. Essentially, you are better off with walking since most of the road consist of U-turns. When walking you can just cross. You'll notice that jumping is possible and your character jumps way too high. In the house we go down the basement to see a dead couple and lying next to them is a VHS tape. As soon as we pick it up we see it inserted into a VCR and the tape plays showing the husband killing the wife. So the tapes the game was talking about is a series of found footage we have to watch? Sounds interesting but we cannot really get away from the husband. When you (the protagonist on the tape) die you are back in the house. This is what the store page says when refers to you meeting your intended fate. OK, so all this must play out like this. But what now? I was walking aimlessly downstairs and upstairs when suddenly I fell to the ground as if I'd been caught by something. The next scene shows you being pulled on the ground inside a cave. This is where we wake up and armed with a flashlight we need to find a way out. On the way we see texts (written in blood?) and meet an owlman we need to run from. If you think the creature resembles a human more with bird-like features you'll be disappointed as it is the other way around. Quite ridiculous, to be honest. As soon as we are outside the camera gets stuck and we are greeted with an end sequences. In these sections when there is a cutscene (plus when we are driving at the beginning) pulling up the options doesn't work. We simply have to watch the cutscene as we cannot pause it. During my next walkthrough the owl caught up with me during the cutscene so it was very annoying and broke the immersion. No, there was no game over since I completed the game already. These annoying bits and pieces are proof that the game was left unfinished. The main menu allows us to start a so-called chase mode which is in daylight and running from the creatures is next to impossible as they are way too fast. So if the task is to avoid them why is it called chase mode? From December news came that the game will get an overhaul with the removal of some annoying sections. I think it's best to skip this game for now and wait for the remastered version to be released as this game is way too buggy and gameplay does not make much sense.

I'm not really sure if OWLMAN is an asset flip. Some elements of this game certainly make it seem like the developer put some effort into assembling some kind of original here. On the other hand, a lot of the game assets don't seem like they were created by the developer, but they haven't credited any asset creators for supplying assets, which might be a case of plagiarism. There's no evidence, so we need to give the benefit of the doubt... regardless, asset flip or not, the quality here is indistinguishable from many asset flip/cash grab scams, and that's a problem in itself. Certainly, because this is free, benefit of the doubt can go to the developer because they're not trying to profit from the work of others. So what is this? Well, it's your usual haunted house/apartment/hospital/forest jumpscare game, this time with a "found footage" vibe and a couple of different monsters to chase you and kill you... it's been done before, and unfortunately the implementation here isn't great, with sluggish controls, bugs and technical defects. This doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The locked resolution is also very low, giving the game a lot of jaggies and blurriness.. it's not good at all. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you download this free game? The game is completely free. This is noble a gesture that shows dedication to both gamers, and the gaming industry. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration. It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. There's no "maybe" option in Steam, unfortunately, but I hope to see more work from this developer, perhaps as part of a professional game development company that can make full use of their talents without needing to make budget/quality compromises.
Czy widział tu ktoś człowieka-sowę? OWLMAN to horror, chyba. Bo o ile prawie w każdym z tych miejsc można znaleźć kasetę i "przeżyć" jej zawartość, to dalej wydarzenia zamiast odpowiadać, jeszcze bardziej mieszają Nam w głowie zmieniając np. porę dnia i miejsce akcji i kończąc się kolejnym słabo sygnalizowanym przeniesieniem.
