You have to sort rings on the right pole to get money, go to some market stands to shop temporary items or permanent skills, and the go on to the next level. You'll get a game over screen if there is any warning sign (!) on your screen when the clock hits 12h. Which mostly is when a ring is one of those poles that go down at 12h. Gladly dying isn't bad, you keep all your coins and the only downside is that you start on some easy levels again where you will get fewer coins because there is less to sort, but that isn't bad at all. At this moment the game has 6 achievements. 5 of those are sort of easter eggs kinda achievements and can be unlocked it just a few minutes. The last one is for buying the Orca toy from the shop, which costs over 7k coins. This will be a long grind if you have to get it this way, buying as many "double coins" as possible as a temporary buff might help, and also the lucky skill to get random coins on each level. I got lucky and just after playing for 2h, I got the Orca toy in a mystery box which only cost a few gold pieces. I stated the number of achievements at this moment because I know the developer has plans to add more achievements. I hope there will be more easter eggs and funny achievements as most of them are now. I did enjoy Out of Order a lot! it is easy to understand and has such cute graphics. I would highly recommend giving it a chance.
Fun casual game with enough challenge later on to keep you interested. The colors are very nice and the controls work well. Compulsively sort rings from spawner towers onto collector towers. If the spawners become too full or the collectors go too long without having the right color stacked at the bottom you lose and return to the first round. Win rounds by stacking each collector tower with 5 rings of the right color. Each round gives you money at the end which you can buy useful items with. Tower inverters and repair kits can get you through some difficult levels though I'd recommend saving hem up for a later level where you will certainly need them. I haven't bothered with most of the achievements. One requires collecting and spending a large amount of money in game which would take quite a while. You can play single player or have more than one player on the same keyboard. Good when you want something a bit easy but also sort of actiony, with bright colors. Play as various cute little creatures and you can get pets that follow them.
Out of Order is a fun little stacking-based puzzle game with an interesting roguelite progression. The game requires you to rearrange the nuts on each bolt/tower so that the colour of the nuts corresponds with the colour of the bolt. There are Spawner towers where you can use as a placeholder to "store" nuts that you may need later or in some cases, get new nuts to complete the objectives. To make it more challenging, there's a timer involved. Whenever the clock goes a full circle, the bolt towers will basically swallow a single nut, forcing you to add another nut in order to complete a previously-completed tower. Spawner towers are also generally more "shaky" so whenever they are stacked to the brim with nuts, they will start to wobble and will eventually "break". Of course, as you play, more challenging mechanics get introduced, including limited Spawner towers, but the game offers multiple ways for you to salvage your runs as well. You'll earn some coins for every level you complete and these coins can then be used to purchase permanent perks that will, for instance, increase your character's run speed or luck (in finding loose coins on the ground). There are also items that you can use like a "tower invert" ability to invert the stacked nuts on a tower, a tower repair kit, and more. However, like all roguelites, the items you can buy is randomly generated from a set list of items and sometimes, you just need to play a couple more rounds for the stuff you really want to pop up. Despite its fairly hectic gameplay, the game is pretty casual in the sense that you get to keep whatever you've managed to accumulate throughout your run.. and yes, that includes everything in your inventory along with whatever coins you've managed to save. This is important since the game does allow you to own a little pet or an orca toy (a collectible) but in order to buy them, you'll need to play and save up a whole lot of coins. ----------------------
Watch me play!
https://youtu.be/ayReVgCfbC8 ---------------------- I've played Out of Order in solo mode so I'm not sure how
chaotic
the game would be had it been played in co-op. However, I'd like to point out that the game does get a nice difficulty bump once you've crossed the "honeymoon levels" a.k.a. the 10th level threshold. If you're into creating stuff, the game even has a level editor (beta) that allows you to use the assets available in-game to create your own devilishly challenging levels. However, the editor is fairly barebones right now - you can place items but I couldn't figure out how to rotate or delete stuff. Maybe the options to do so aren't added to the editor yet. In terms of the graphics, I love the hand-drawn art (with bold outlines) in this game. It gives the game a nice unique look. Now, I also have a little feedback for the developer/s - Is it possible to add a stats screen that I can access via the menu so I can see how many levels of say Luck bonus or speed bonus that my character has in total, and maybe how many percentage of extra luck/speed bonus that I've accumulated? Personally, I think the little paw prints on the ground can be made a bit more obvious, so new players to the game would be able to instantly catch on that they are meant to follow the paw prints to proceed to the next level. That said, it didn't take me long to figure that out myself so it's not a biggie I guess. It's just that... had the paw prints been more obvious, I probably would have caught on that much earlier :P
Overall
I would definitely recommend Out of Order to fans of stacking-based puzzle games. The roguelite part adds a nice twist to the overall gameplay as well, allowing for plenty of replayability, especially if you're determined to get that pet and toy orca! If you wanna hate your friends at the end, get this game lol Very nice game tho, got the expensive item - the orca - after so so many rounds. Worth it though.
DISCLAIMER: Developer gave me a free key to test and review the game on Steam. That has not influenced my opinion and I've strived to write a thoroughly objective review.
TLDR
It's a really fun concept for a Roguelike where you have to quickly try to solve puzzles together with your friends. Simplistic in the design so it's easy to get into but won't also offer complex progression systems that would keep you hooked for a long time. A good party game and definitely worth the low MSRP.
PROS
+ Easy to get into. + Fun with friends and can get chaotic (in a good way!). + Charming style from visuals to sound effects. + Pretty smooth Remote Play Together experience (normally very laggy for me).
CONS
- Some mechanics weren't explained during gameplay that caused unnecessary game overs. - Could use more progression mechanics to increase replayability.
WHAT IS IT?
Out of Order is a really fun party game when you just want some quick casual fun. It bids you and up to 3 of your friends to solve randomly generated puzzles involving towers of nuts. The goal is to reorganize the nuts by colour and you and your friends will have to work together fast to solve the puzzles. If you manage to solve the puzzle within the time limit (and not breaking any towers due to overstacking), bunch of moose will offer you a car ride to your next puzzle. Fail and it's the bus of shame you need to take instead.
SIMPLE PUZZLES BUT SOME MECHANICS GO UNEXPLAINED
The puzzle concept is simple and easy to understand at a glance. Which is good because the game won't give you any proper tutorials to start. Instead it will show you things with in-game signs and alerts, like arrows and flashing exclamation marks. Since I was focused on trying to clear puzzles and communicating, I didn't really pay enough of attention to the in-game alerts, nor did I understand them at first. This lead me to break a lot of towers and to cause some game overs in the beginning. I feel that maybe a bit clearer messaging about the game mechanics could be useful.
SUPER FUN TO PLAY TOGETHER
With friends, the puzzles are fun to solve and levels generally take only 15-60 seconds to solve on average. It keeps the pace high and you have a feeling of progressing as you move from puzzle to puzzle. Remote Play Together also worked really well and compared to more HD games, the experience was more smooth. Non-host players did complain having a bit laggy movements but that is an unfortunate side effect of playing a game that is streamed to you.
ROGUELIKE?
The roguelike elements play a role in letting you accumulate buffs, items and pets that you can keep even after dying. It gives you the familiar sense of progression you know to expect if you've ever played a roguelike game. Clearing puzzles nets you coins that you can use to buy consumable items, permament buffs, temporary buffs or pets that are just cosmetic minions. The amount of progression systems is rather limited as the game has a really small scope so if you're looking for a really involved roguelike that keeps you hooked with incremental progressions, this is not a game you're looking for. The aim is clearly to be more casual and a party game. It entertains you for a little while but won't steal your free time in a way like Hades and the likes can do.
VISUALS AND SOUNDS ARE CHARMING
The visuals and the animations are really well done in my opinion. The art style is simplistic and cartoony. Reminds me of the Newgrounds Flash-games of old. Paired with cartoony and minimalistic sounds, it all comes together in a really cohesive way.
CONCLUSION
All in all I really enjoyed playing the game and will most likely play it every now and then as a fun party game with other people. It's simple and casual enough that it's not daunting to pick up but the drawback is that after an hour or 2 of playing, you probably feel like moving on. Until you want to pick it up next time!
What a fresh breath of air! An innovative puzzle rogue-lite. Sorting has never been more fun! The colored-towers have their hex-nuts out of order. Quickly sort them out before the spawn-towers fill up and explode. Play alone or with friends. Featuring exquisite art and lush music. You can use your keyboard, mouse or game controller. Though a keyboard and controller is recommended. You can even create your own maps and themes. It's fun, challenging, and keeps your brain on its toes.
omg i love this game so much! i'm glad i found it at the time that i did because it was exactly what i was looking for! a rougelike style game that didn't involve fighting or killing anything, and instead puzzle focused. so perfect for me! :) the art and characters, are of course very cute and attracted me the most! the simplicity of the game and how well it plays is also great, and i absolutely adore the inclusion of PETS! the only thing that could make this game better for me, is character customization, like hats or something cute like that ;) also.. this is the game that inspired me to start game dev myself! :D much thanks to the dev for creating such a beautiful and inspiring game <3
