About

Eleven-year-old Iggy wasn’t sure what he was expecting when he dragged his friends out to the woods to attempt a strange ritual from a book he found in the dumpster at school, but his wildest imagination couldn’t have prepared him for the land of wonder and magic that awaited them at the bottom of that old willow tree.
Now, however, it’s twenty years later, and he and his friends are past the age of make-believe. The wonderland of their youth has become nothing more than a far-off dream—until one night, Bucks and her newborn daughter disappear without a trace. Soon, Iggy and his friends find themselves pulled back into that world of childish glee. Only their wishes and desires aren’t so innocent anymore, and the world has twisted itself into a land of horror and depravity that’s scarcely recognizable.

Our Wonderland is a horror-fantasy visual novel focusing on the struggles, issues, and deteriorating relationships between five childhood friends (amplified to horrific effect). I think of it a bit like an overwrought character drama that happens to include horrific and fantastical things. It contains five different arcs, each with its own ending, and your choices affect the amount of peril the protagonist experiences (hint: how many times Iggy violently dies), as well as the final ending (hint: who Iggy ends up with at the very end, because apparently in some messed-up way, this is also the world's worst dating sim).
As an extra note, this game also touches on a lot of LGBTQIA+ themes.
Our Wonderland was originally released episodically on itchio between 2021 and 2024. This Steam release is the newly remastered version with overhauled art, new features, and many quality-of-life updates.

A dramatic, emotional, and occasionally horrific visual novel told in five arcs, each with its own ending
Four possible epilogues based on your choices (1 neutral and 1 for each of the 3 LIs Iggy can end up with)
20 to 25 hours of playtime (around 288k words of reading)
Storybook-style visuals accentuated by a weird, colorful art style
Over 570 CGs/illustrations (that's a whole heck of a lot)
Some super sweet animatic-style cutscenes for important, poignant scenes (easier to cry to)
12 ways to violently die! (if you want to, of course)
A fun cinematic soundtrack and lots of dramatic sound effects for an immersive experience

Our Wonderland is generally recommended for mature audiences on account of its themes. If after reading the information in the Mature Content Description below, you have any concerns regarding the content, it's recommended that you read the complete and detailed list of content and trigger warnings available on the official site for the game. The game also includes a Censored Mode. This mode spot-pixelates elements of gore within the CGs, which may be helpful if you're interested in the game but squeamish about gore.

Loved this game so much
Just a wonderfully lovingly crafted VN full of heart. Carrot is an incredibly talented artist with such a unique, expressive style, and it's endlessly impressive the sheer amount of art they drew for this, as well as their talent for varied camera angles and poses--it's really almost more like an animated comic book than a VN. The characters are well-drawn, multilayered, and complex, and I really enjoyed gradually getting to know them (plus, much-needed respectful ace representation). You can tell that Carrot really, really loves this cast and cares so much about this journey that they're on. There's a lot of gore, so that's something to be aware of if that bothers you. And the photo backgrounds didn't really work for me personally--but given the enormous amount of art there is already and the large number of settings, it's a super valid choice. Overall, lovely work and well worth checking out!

I hate this game. No, I'm not joking - this visual novel felt like putting my brain through a blender. The horror is very visceral, dying over and over and over, blood everywhere all the time, I do NOT like gore and even with having the worst of it censored, it was tough. That wasn't the worst of it. The worst was the emotional turmoil this game put me through. Good art makes you feel things. I can't remember finishing a game before and being angry at it, but I am angry at "Our Wonderland". It does a great job using royalty-free art and music. I could have done without the flashing screens, presentation-wise, but at least the player is warned about them before starting the game. My biggest gripe: this visual novel does NOT respect your time, at all. It repeats and loops and will pretend lines you've read three times already are unseen and hence you cannot skip them unless you turn on skip unseen text. Also, personal opinion - Act 2 was the peak of this Visual Novel to me, and there's 5 acts. The final confrontation was a lot to take in thematically, but the plot did kind of lose me after Act 2 anyways. And every act still had parts I liked, or at least, could appreciate the messaging of even when it was horrible and disgusting. Do this to yourself at your own risk. I do still recommend it.
(I haven't finished the remaster yet and might update my review when I do) Our Wonderland is a free visual novel that could be described as a character-driven fantasy-horror. The story's protagonist is Iggy, a socially anxious 30-year-old freelancer who meets his childhood friends at a garden party. They reminisce about their school days and friendship, but it is clear that unresolved issues and complicated pasts are poisoning their lives and their friendship. After one of his friends, Buxley, leaves her home with her daughter, Iggy is forced to return to Wonderland, a magical place that was once his and his friends' childhood playground. However, they are no longer children full of innocent desires. They are full of pain, frustration, regret, unfulfilled dreams, and wishes. The Wonderland transforms from a safe haven into a terrifying land of dangerous monsters and psychological torture. This magical world, in one way or another, pushes all characters to see the dark sides of their friends and confront their pasts, traumas, dark desires, and complicated relationships. The main driving point is definitely the characters. They have problems that feel real. Although they are 30 years old, they still haven't decided what to do with their lives, and if they did, they are unable to achieve their dreams. The game is not afraid to show the dark, twisted sides of characters that other stories would avoid for fear of making the characters too unsympathetic. Yet, Our Wonderland manages the opposite. You will learn to love or at least sympathise with all of them, even though they are very flawed people. The game is made by a one person who did all the art and writing, yet it feels like a project from a small, passionate group. The writing of the game is great, and it manages to pull you in. There is a place for disturbing scenes, humour, and heartfelt moments. The cartoonish art contrasts with disturbing themes to create an unforgettable atmosphere. Music is most of the time selected perfectly to help set the mood of the scenes. Of course, the story is not perfect. Although I haven't finished the remaster yet, there are some issues it can't fix. Thanks to the specific story structure, there are repeated story beats and small pacing issues. Also, one member of the cast did not get enough time in the story, so she feels unexplored compared to rest of the main cast. Another problem is that some players might strongly dislike the ending for certain reasons (though it is impossible to explain why without spoiling it). I did not do the game justice with this short review, but others can do it better. I would need hours to organise my thoughts and write a review that this visual novel deserves.
