Otto’s Escape is one of those games that relies on a non-standard control method to set it apart. In this case, you control the left and right boosters of Otto’s jetpack to rocket him up a tower, collecting fuel and avoiding mines along the way. Mid-air tank controls and a rapidly dwindling fuel supply could make for incredibly frustrating gameplay, but thanks to a secret gyroscope embedded in Otto’s jetpack that keeps him upright at all times, you soon learn how to reliably control Otto, most of the time. Unfortunately, this game demands precise control, as you weave your way through small gaps in the mines, which soon start to move back and forth. Your instinct is to slowly and carefully line up your approach, but the more you hesitate, the more your fuel bar drains. The only option is to rocket up the tower as fast as you can until you invariably run out of fuel and are sent back to the very bottom. The whole game feels like it should have been a mobile game. It’s well-polished, but simplistic, from the graphics to the controls. It’s also the kind of game you might want to pick up now and again, but I can’t see anyone wanting to play it for long stretches at a time. 15 and 30 minutes were enough time for me to get tired of running the same tower rooms over and over, trying to get to the top. There is a certain joy in mastering the controls, and in getting a clean run up to where you failed before. For a free game, Otto’s Escape is worth trying out. "Otto's Escape" is misleadingly presented as a platformer, this is more like a basic Moon Lander ripoff where you control a "spaceship" called Otto and progress upwards through a tower. Why? Nobody cares... the technical delivery here was so bad, it was a complete and utter failure on Steam Direct. On the topic of visuals, the weak looking 2D retro assets seem like they'd be more at home in a browser game or a mobile app. 3D graphics accelerators hit the mainstream of PC gaming in the mid 1990's with cards like the ATI Rage and Voodoo3D, there's no excuse for such poor 2D graphics in 2026. That alone is enough to disqualify this for recommendation. Insultingly, the developer insists that you should play this with a console peasant children's toy gamepad instead of KB+M. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're designing games for. It's the responsibility of the developer to ensure the game runs well on the platform they're selling it on, with the primary peripherals that PC gamers use. Insultingly, the developer used a bunch of GPT AI slop for the Steam store page and marketing material. AI slop is an insult to gamers everywhere, it's trained on copyrighted material without permission. Worse, if they had no qualms about using it here, there's no telling how much of the rest of this product is also vibe coded or made with AI slop. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Since free games don't contribute to your game collector badge and other profile stuff, is this a worthwhile addition to your Steam library? This is a hard pass. There's no immediate financial commitment, but there are thousands of more compelling games on the platform that will give you a lot more enjoyment for your time.
