[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? No, but it is a nice platformer reminding me of the old times - challenging - but just a little less frustrating than it was in the 80s. Jack and his talking dog Butch go on an adventure to explore an old castle. Most of the time you play Jack, but in some situations you can switch to Butch to crawl through tiny spaces. Slash vines (or foes) with your sword, collect coins, kill enemies. The castle is full of skeletons who respawn a few seconds after you killed them, so you can just avoid them if you like. Climbing is rather easy, just press RT and you hold onto a wall, then move up or down (until you get tired and slide down). Walljumping also works. Boxes can be pushed (or pulled if you like), keys open doors, and you can use your binoculars to view your sourroundings. Whatever you do, don't touch spikes, they kill immideately. Dying after losing your three health points is not a real problem, though, you just respawn at the last automatic checkpoint (the entry to the current room). So you explore room after room, obtaining a key and entering the next room. Controller works fine, ultrawidescreen with borders to the sides. Conclusion: Focused platformer in simple pixel art, but with tight controls and satisfying gameplay.
I liked the presentation. And disliked that the game isn't super smooth. Feels like 30FPS. But since I am on Linux, it could be due to Wine. However, one concern overrides all other. The game is hardcoded to be played on WSAD + JKL. No rebinding options. This is a dealbreaker for me.
If you adored Celeste and retro-style 2D action-platformers, you'll love 6Souls. Enjoyed the Butch sequences and the protagonists' dynamic. Definitely deserves a place in your gaming library.
Bewertung in Zahlen
Grafik: 7.5/10 Sound: 7.5/10 Spieldesign: 8/10 Content Umfang: 8/10 Balance: 7/10 Story: 7/10 Atmosphäre: 7.5/10
Mein Fazit
Hallo? Ein sprechender Hund! Wo gibt es denn so was? :) Deshalb von mir: KLARE KAUFEMPFEHLUNG! Vielen Dank für das Lesen dieser Rezension!

6Souls is a retro-styled 2D action platformer developed by BUG-Studio and published by Ratalaika Games S.L., and it embraces classic design principles with a clear affection for old-school platforming traditions. From the outset, the game establishes itself as a focused, tightly scoped adventure that values precision, repetition, and gradual mastery over modern spectacle or sprawling systems. You play as Jack, accompanied by his loyal dog Butch, as the two venture into the ominous Clifford Castle to uncover the fate of a vanished family and free six trapped souls whose power lies at the heart of the mystery. The structure of 6Souls is firmly rooted in level-based progression, with dozens of compact stages spread across multiple themed areas. Each zone introduces its own visual identity and hazard patterns, ranging from crumbling castle interiors to outdoor ruins and mechanical corridors. Rather than opting for a fully open-ended map, the game leans into a straightforward forward momentum that keeps the pace brisk. Levels are short but dense, often requiring players to memorize trap placements, enemy movement, and timing windows. Instant-death spikes, collapsing platforms, and moving hazards are frequent, reinforcing the game’s commitment to deliberate, methodical play. Platforming is the clear star of the experience. Jack’s movement is responsive and predictable, which is crucial given how tightly the levels are constructed. Early stages focus on basic jumping and positioning, but as the game progresses, players unlock additional abilities that significantly expand traversal options. The most notable of these is the dash-like “soul boost,” which allows for mid-air corrections and extended jumps. This mechanic becomes central to later levels, where chaining boosts together is often the only way to survive long stretches of hazards. While this can occasionally feel repetitive, it also gives the game a strong mechanical identity and rewards players who learn to execute movement cleanly. Combat exists, but it plays a secondary role to navigation and survival. Enemies are generally simple in behavior and are more often obstacles to be avoided than threats to be defeated. This design choice reinforces the idea that 6Souls is less about fighting and more about movement discipline. Boss encounters, however, break this pattern and serve as highlights of the campaign. These fights are pattern-based and demand attention to timing and positioning, offering spikes in challenge that feel distinct from standard stages. While not overly complex, they provide satisfying climaxes to each major section and test the player’s understanding of the game’s mechanics. Visually, 6Souls commits fully to its pixel-art aesthetic, delivering clean, colorful sprites and environments that evoke the 16-bit era without feeling muddy or outdated. Animations are clear and readable, which is essential for a game that relies so heavily on split-second reactions. Each area features subtle visual variation that helps maintain interest over the course of the adventure, even when mechanical themes repeat. The audio presentation complements this style with a chiptune-inspired soundtrack that underscores the sense of nostalgic adventure. While tracks are simple and loop frequently, they fit the tone well and avoid becoming distracting during repeated attempts at difficult sections. Narrative elements are intentionally understated. Story beats are delivered through brief cutscenes and simple dialogue, offering context without slowing the game’s momentum. The mystery of the castle, the trapped souls, and the unseen antagonist provide just enough motivation to frame the action, but the game never attempts deep character development or complex storytelling. This restraint works in its favor, keeping focus squarely on gameplay while still giving the journey a sense of purpose. In terms of challenge, 6Souls strikes a careful balance. The frequent checkpoints and fast respawns soften the impact of failure, encouraging experimentation and persistence rather than frustration. Players who enjoy mastering patterns through repetition will find the difficulty curve fair, while those less accustomed to precision platformers may find certain sequences demanding. Optional harder modes add replay value for those seeking a stricter test of skill, though the core experience remains approachable. Overall, 6Souls is a compact and confident indie platformer that understands exactly what it wants to be. It doesn’t attempt to reinvent the genre or overwhelm players with features, instead focusing on solid level design, reliable controls, and a steady progression of challenge. While its simplicity and reliance on familiar mechanics may limit its appeal for players seeking innovation, fans of classic platforming will appreciate its disciplined design and nostalgic charm. As a concise, skill-focused adventure, 6Souls delivers a satisfying journey that respects both the player’s time and the traditions it draws inspiration from. Rating: 6/10
I was surprised how good this was after going in with no expectations. It's challenging, unique and fun all at once. Here is a full review I did on YouTube. I recommend watching it if you are considering buying this game. https://youtu.be/TfHRuvWAKuU
