POSITIVE POINTS:
- Story, horror, puzzles and parkour: can you have a more original mix? - The game is made by a single person, which is really impressive. - It uses Unreal 5 and it shows: its graphics are very remarkable and the lighting stands out especially. - It has very clever puzzles. - Its price!
NEGATIVE POINTS:
- Being a game made by a single person, we have seen many of its assets in other games, although in Once in Hell they stand out for being placed in a smart and tasteful way. - The torch uses batteries - yes, I know this happens in reality too, but I hate it when the batteries run out! It would be great if they lasted longer. - It is not dubbed in English, but in Georgian, which will not please everyone. I personally like it, because it gives it an exotic touch.
CONCLUSIONS:
Once in Hell is a promising game that wisely mixes a good story, quite interesting and intelligent puzzles with the horror genre. And on top of that, we must use parkour to overcome traps and other difficulties. It is true that it has some flaws, but taking into account that it has been developed by only one person, we have to value the good, and the well done, more than the bad, which is hardly important.
EVALUATION:
7/10. If you like horror, and you enjoy well thought out puzzles, get Once in Hell: although it's a bit short, for its price and its originality it's worth it. Generic horror game that you’ve probably played before. The plot is decent, however difficult to follow due to the non-English voice language. There are subtitles, however it appears that they do not always match the words on screen. Sometimes the audio says a lot, but the subtitles just show one small sentence. Foreign language is also included in visuals throughout the game, so you may miss certain information. Long story short, it's about a little girl that must defeat Chaos. The game is a classic entry in the indie horror genre, hence it contains a number of flaws common to many similar titles. The most obvious indication is that it includes the generic horror UI template. There's a throbbing heart that indicates health, a pointless diary that rarely updates or displays what you're supposed to do, and so on. The worst feature is a flashlight that needs batteries to work. This is the primary reason why these games are not enjoyable to play. It may appear to be a smart idea on paper because it requires you to use the source of light only when absolutely required, but it only irritates gamers. Because these games are always dark and require you to seek for small objects, you have no choice but to keep your flashlight turned on at all times. Batteries are scarce, therefore you will continuously fumble around in the dark, especially because items are not highlighted. It is difficult to strike the correct balance between darkness and light because many games do not handle this well. It generally feels forced or even broken, as in the cavern area where you must complete a jumping task. The engine's limitations cause various problems. The first is that you can't see the path if you waste flashligh or torch, and the second is that you have to carry an item across the platforms. If you dump it in the pit, the puzzle becomes unsolvable and you are forced to reload. The other disadvantage is that assets may look familiar. If you've played an indie horror before, you'll recognize the same doors, videotapes, and keys. Even the surroundings resemble those from past games, such as the initial level in a mansion with libraries, followed by long halls with paintings on the walls and empty cupboards. Logic puzzles are another common aspect in these games. There aren't many of them, and while some are quite intelligent, making the incorrect move will result in your death. Most of it is trial and error because you have no idea what to do, but the game saves at key points so you don't lose too much time. However, since diary is pointless, you have no idea how to solve puzzles. The game isn't long, but it's also not very memorable. It's just one more in the sea of similar titles.
Half of the graphic settings are broken and need to be set to low for the game to run. The confusing as ♥♥♥♥ puzzles coupled with the horribly translated text made this unplayable to me.
Amazing game with amazing atmosphere. you need to think with brain if not game willnot lead you. i liked it.
puzzles, parkour in the last level which i hate i would rather give you a neutral rating because of it, some English translation issues however, it's a complete game, it wasn't that bad and it was half off so it was worth that price.
