EDIT: I just watched the first trailer and realised it shows more 3rd person interactivity than the entire game actually does, and shows scenes that are not in the game which is....... very odd. -------------------------------------- This is a game that I wished steam had a not positive, not negative rating for. I purchased it at £2, and I would say it is worth that for the less than 2hrs it takes to complete (And can be done much quicker if you dont sit on the menu's and such like I did). For every positive, there is unfortunately a negative. The game starts and shows 3rd person/character models, but is primarily a first person game. You don't see any other people at any time, right until the very end, and its a random guard..... its super strange. I would have suggested going one way or the other, but I feel like i've been FPS the entire time, only at the very beginning and the very end do I see my (And other) characters, and I can't feel anything for them as I've not seen them the entire game. The story is quite good and captivating, and I like the way it unfolds, but I also found that I couldn't get invested/care enough for the characters. Like why he hated his Dad? It's never explained, and throughout the journey you have to feel about something you don't really understand. At the beginning, you are spooked by crows, setting up this "The Birds" Style horror, which never, ever comes back, at all. You are told the world is so bad, every animal will kill you etc, but you never experience it - ever. A missed opportunity. The graphics are good, I have zero gripes. I hope a sequel is made and the dev improves upon these points.
The setting, a post apoc game where the animals have become infected and even a scratch is deadly, wiping out 99% of humanity. You play a character who managed to survive with his younger (but still adult) brother. Your brother leaves after a fight to find a rumored "safe haven" where people still live. You feeling bad (and alone) end up following after him some days later. This game tries to punch up but what follows feels much like a cinematic walking simulator with puzzles that aren't overly hard and feel like they were added to break up the walking part and give you time to look around for a second before continuing. The story and setting are nailed to a T. The graphics are pretty good and you can tell they tried to use some sort of motion capture, or AI to fill in the motions? Can't put my finger on it but there is a feel of jank to the animations. My only BIG issue is that for whatever reason this games performance can be a little iffy and this caused my computer fans kick up to high and stayed there regularly making me worry about what the game is doing to my PC. Idk if there is just bad code or if it just runs my computer so hot that that my fans needed to kick on higher (I've NEVER had a game fire up my fans as high as this game including AAA truly cinematic games). So mixing in that the games performance turns my PC fans into a ton of extra noise (and possibly heat, I need to test) and that its basically is a walking sim with a few stopping points has made me not give it a 2nd play. For the price there is a half decent setting and story here but it isn't without flaws. Post thought. The cinematic trailer for the game, at no point have I come into contact with anything that cinematic, most of the story telling is from "echos" left behind at the various stopping points.
Genre
Ein First Person Story Driven Adventure
Story
Achievement Schwierigkeit 2/10

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow third group

Stilted English Delivery
I'm not talking Chinese takeout here, I'm talking about the dialog lines. Voiceover delivery is great, and so is the musical score underlying the game. Easy to listen to for ages. But the lines they got asked to speak are not proper English and they jar the player out of the immersion. Someone opened google translate and spoiled a game that probably took months to build. I wonder if all games titled as horror, somehow get a lower quality bar for dialog and for plotline somehow? Once Alive is not really a horror game though, there are no jump scares and although the environmental sounds are not perfect, the backing soundtrack is enjoyable and carries the game. The plot is decent, not unique, but done so well you never do know what happens next.
GPU Smelter
OK, my biggest graphics gripe is not that the game hammers your GPU, but that it has NO FOV setting. I felt a bit woozy after an hour, it's not a long game either so you don't need to take many breaks to complete it. It is a pretty looking game and uses atmospheric effects and lighting very well and at the right points. Now that the less polished bits of the game are noted, let's move on to what worked.
Good walking Sim
Once Alive, is a strange title, and I hope I'm not spoiling it, but as walking sim's go, a lot of people in this one die. I like even how the team mascot even gets a cameo appearance in the game. A lot of thought did go into many aspects of the game, but a few, in my opinion fell short. It is firstly a very short game, I suspect you could speed run it in about 90 minutes. Walk and running speeds work really well. Like all walking sims Once Alive has very basic controls, but I was diss-appointed when at one point there is a QTE, and then another one where you have to run. But then the QTE mechanic never gets re-used again! So it feels as if some sections of the game plot-line did get rushed through to a release deadline, and the flat environmental soundscape was not the only rushed part. Small character animations that would have made the game feel realistic, like cutting a wire fence, or joining some wires were left out entirely too. The game reminded me firstly of the Covid-19 pandemic and a game that tops the walking sims of similar plot type: Everyone's gone to the Rapture. Once Alive is however more limiting, you have one path to follow no backtracking and no exploring. Every so often a low wall stops you progressing. It is annoying, but you can often at that point see where the bridge or door you need is. Usually a lamp or something beckons you onwards to the next findable item, there is no hunting for hidden objects, Once Alive thankfully never frustrates as a result.
Railway Tracks
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is another game I was reminded of, some scenes were definitely inspired by Ethan Carter. Once Alive somehow fails to really feel as very dark though, and I always felt like I was on a railway track. One final thing about the game I did like is the regular autosaving, taking one more interaction mechanic out of the way to letting you just get on with playing. Not worth the asking price, but the fresh plot-line and it's evenly paced delivery and music are worth the time to complete the game. If you did enjoy this slightly scary walking sim, you will want to check out these too https://store.steampowered.com/curator/41773079-EmpathyGames/list/90678
Benden bir THUMBS UP. EMEĞE SAYGI :P
If you see this in sale and like walking simulators and knowledge that the actaully good ones are quite rare, you should definitely buy! While it is not mindblowing in gameplay the amosphere and especially graphics compensate the issues easily. The story is quite good also keeping its players tangled into the mystery and how stakes get higher personally for protagonist on each step - unfortunately without spoiling too much it flattens in the end and some events do not make so much of sense. Whatsoever - this 2 hour long experience lasted well of its welcome and even left me wanting more for the atmosphere was always there granting beautiful scenes time after another both interior and exterior. Once Alive is truely a keeper among very few other games of the thin genre.
very impressive game for a solo developer ! I really enjoyed the short story and simple gameplay, worth playing :)
