a mixed boomer shooter clone between iconic classics like DOOM due to its entire graphic style and BLOOD/Duke Nukem due to just the jumps you can perform. if you are looking to play a new game looks to old school fps style, you are welcome. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3686838364 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3686826501 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3692745892
Oil ? What Oil ? Story: You play as a super soldier, who is given a bunch of weapons and a simple task, take back stolen oil which was taken by an evil army of demons. In reality there's no story whatsoever, it's just a bunch of different levels that don't have any connection and the story description comes from the store page as there's nothing in the actual game. Graphics: Visually Oil Invasion is a mixture of two styles that don't really mesh together. The enemy designs are cool, but they look like sprites taken out of a DOOM wad and the environments look like they're 3D stock environments, like a very basic farmhouse, a fairy fantasy dungeon and a medieval fortress. It really feels like a bunch of stock maps stitched together and while I liked the enemy designs I can't say for the environments. They're very generic and just not fun to explore, especially the last mission which is a giant farm where it's borderline impossible to find the key to advance. Audio: The audio design is pretty bad across the soundtrack and the sound effects. There's only one track playing throughout the entire game and sometimes it just won't play at all. The song itself is very much just a stock free song and that fact that it plays on loop is pretty grading. But what I cannot stand is when sound effects stack upon each other and then increase in volume. Most enemies in the game don't even make any noises, except the ones that shoot and as soon as they spot you they stay locked in and will shoot you through walls and the audio effects stacks, glitches out and becomes so loud it will feel like you're going insane. I also have to say that most of the games share the same sound effect, like dual uzis and a mini gun sharing the same sounds. Gameplay: Oil Invasion is a DOOM inspired shooter even down to the gun being in the middle of the screen. You run around collecting keys and gunning down enemies to reach that sweet stolen oil which is located at the end of the level. However sadly this is nowhere near as fun as playing DOOM. I'll begin by saying that the shooting is probably some of the stiffest and annoying shooting I've ever encountered in any game by far. The camera turns so slowly and on certain levels you need to have quick camera movement to deal with some enemies. However there's an upside to this. There's only three enemy types in the entire game, two of which deal basically no damage and sometimes don't even bother coming after you, however the third type which is the heavy gunner. melts you like there's no tomorrow. Shooting also feels off, purely due to one reason and that's because you have to be on the same level as the enemies. When you shoot you have to be on a straight path to them, if either you or the enemy is slightly elevated the shot will not connect and when fighting in an area with tons of hills or stairs then you will simply not be able to kill the enemies. Also since each area is basically a stock map, it doesn't feel like a proper FPS map. There's so many levels where you can easily cheese it and skip towards to the exit. Actually cheesing it is far much simpler than doing some of the intended things, especially the platforming. With how stiff the movement is, the platforming is even worse. You can't control yourself once you jump and certain levels have instant kill pits and you jump quite far, so it's really easy to overshoot platforms. So you have to sort of awkwardly jump between them, so it's easier to try and go around it. Verdict: Oil Invasion is a rather poor attempt at making a DOOM inspired game. Gameplay is very stiff, shooting unresponsive and tons of incredibly tedious design choices make this brief campaign just annoying to get through. Considering how many free and great alternatives are out there, I suggest playing those. Final Rating: 2.5/10 Pros: + Enemy designs are decent Cons: - Shooting feel super unresponsive - Stock assets feel out of place - Audio design is glitchy and grading on the ears - Platforming is awful NOTE: I was provided with a key by the developer/publisher for review purposes on the behalf of the group Completing the Backlog. This did not impact my opinion on the game. If you liked this review please consider joining https://steamcommunity.com/groups/completingthebacklog
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much but even the low price can't really save this game. Oil Invasion is clearly an asset-flip game with some Doom (1993 obviously) inspired enemies and weapons. I do have to say that the developer is honest on the store-page and does not make this game bigger than it is. The game has 6 maps/levels in total in which you shoot- and kill the 3 different enemies with either a pistol, double pistols, minigun, shotgun or rocket launcher. Throughout the map you have to find a 'star' which is suppose to be the key to open up a door to continue the level and finish it. You can pick up armor, healthpacks, bullets, shells and rockets.... which sounds obvious until you find out there is no need to use a pistol when a minigun uses the same ammo. Second problem in the game is that often your hits do not even register and the main reason for this is that enemies have to align exactly with you to be able to hit them. When an enemy is standing on a platform you can not hit them but even if the enemy is walking on a 5cm higher hill, you can not hit them. In the classic Doom you would kill any as long as you shot in their direction. Third issue is that most enemies often do not move or shoot back. You really have to do your best to get killed by enemies because as long as you click your mouse and find some bullets or healthpacks you should be fine. To be honest Oil Invasion would be really easy if not for the 4th problem; platforming. Your character has a weird-ass low gravity jump and since any type of water/poison/lava instantly kills you (which makes you replay the map) this could be a challenge to master. Since you can not look up or down you can't even see if there is a platform below you or a lava pit. Then there's the map design. Although maps look colorful they hardly make any sense. There are pathways which lead nowhere. There are stairs or bridges you can't just walk through without getting stuck, although the high low gravity jump often saves you. Graphical glitches, platforms you can't jump on, wide fields of nothingness, you name it. On the upside; You can get a cheap Doom and have fun for an hour.
Is it perfect? No. Does it have to be? No, it costs $1. Very fun game, worth buying at full price.
Nice Doom-clone, with nice price! Easy Achievements, 100% / 30-60min.

Medicore at best. -just a handful of levels, some of them are ok, others are trash -no saving at all, if you die, you have to replay the whole level again -some levels contain some platforming which really sucks, because usually if you fail, you fall into lava and die -if enemies are on a higher or lower ledge than you, you can't hit them -only 5 weapons + melee weapons which you always start with all of them -you can only switch your weapons with the mouse wheel and only in one direction WTF -short game overall -sure it's super cheap, but probably still not worth it
This game tries to capture the magic of Doom, Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem 3D, and related FPS titles of the mid-90s. It succeeds at first in it's art style and enemies, until a bit of exploration yields that these enemies are inconsistent, as if from different artists or asset packs. It's also easy to fall off fo the map, go under the map, get lodged in the terrain, stuck between two objects that have adequate room based on what you can see of the asset but the hit boxes are wrong, etc. The soundtrack is My First Dark Synth style and is very repetitive. If made by a five year old, I'd be proud. If made by anyone of double digit age, I advise leaving soundtrack composing to those with musical aptittude. There are a few maps, about 6 to 8 altogether, accessible from the stock main menu. Pick a map, get achievements, clear waves. The problem is this game controls like you'd expect Catacomb Abyss to with a keyboard that's been recently soaked overnight in mountain dew. And there's motion blur. Not much customization as far as visuals, sound, etc. Seems like an asset flip but haven't been able to verify the source. I'll assume that it's a unique creation, given the outcome will be nearly the same. Graphics/Sound: 1.5 Gameplay: 1.5 Misc: 3.5 Value: 2.0 Total: 20% [ F - Low quality but is a game. Avoid.]
