Simply put, Obsolete is a short minimalistic 2D platformer. It does a great job at evoking feelings of isolation but fails to deliver innovative or challenging gameplay. A decent game by a new developer. Played with keyboard (not by choice)
✔️Positive:
[+] Convincing somber atmosphere. The OST is what impressed me the most. It is a soft, yet ever-present tune that seems to just linger in the wind. Despite its simplicity, the music is strangely powerful and amplifies the effect of the monochrome artstyle. Put together, Obsolete successfully evokes an atmosphere of isolation. The feeling of loneliness ties in well with the lore presented in the notes and monuments, which tell a story of a decaying civilization. This becomes evident as you come across abandoned buildings and deformed beings, who do not speak (whether they don’t want to or are unable to remains unanswered). Their silent stares do nothing to diminish the constant feeling of isolation. For a game that is so short, I was pleasantly surprised that this tone/emotion was captured so well.
➖Neutral:
[-] Only 40-60 minutes long. In other words, quite short. There is some replayability in the form of a level select menu, well hidden secrets, and a deathless run achievement. Regardless, it is likely that the average play time will be under 2 hours. Given the low price, I would say this game is worth a try. [-] There are some instances of typos and/or poor writing. Some examples include the use of “then” instead of “them”, and this strangely constructed sentence: “Others very rare are not affected, why?”. Since the developer is French, I would presume that the French version is better written (I don’t speak it well enough to judge myself); however, the English version does not feel like it was written by a native speaker. This can probably be easily addressed in a future update. [-] Default controls are bizarre. Although the control scheme in the main menu states that movement is controlled using the arrow keys, it actually only works with WASD. In addition to WASD, the default buttons for interact and crouch are “E” and “R”, respectively. Since key remapping is unavailable, I am locked into playing with only my left hand. The game does not require the use of a mouse, so my right hand lies awkwardly while my left hand is left does all the work. I really hope key remapping and controller support will be introduced in future updates because this current setup is not very comfortable. [-] Spikes blend in with the background. As seen in the image below, the spikes can be very difficult to spot. Most of the time I accidentally ran into them since they are so well camouflaged. I imagine this can easily be fixed by giving the spikes a darker outline. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2329908119
❌Negative:
[x] Incredibly basic as far as platformers go. Gameplay is by far the weakest component, as it is disappointedly straightforward from start to finish. You are offered only the bare minimum of controls, including: move, crouch (aka decay), jump and interact. Unfortunately, the gameplay does not manage to make up for the simplistic controls, given that it is also underdeveloped. None of the platforming or puzzling elements were particularly innovative and the final boss only has two attack patterns. This may be ideal for beginners but offers little to those with more experience. As a side note, I am a little let down that the decay mechanic (crouch) was not further developed. Considering how central the theme of decay was, it would have made sense to incorporate that more in the gameplay, rather than only a crouch function. For example, an upgrade that allows the decayed form to climb up specific walls? Just a thought. It wouldn’t make sense to add this to Obsolete now but I am hoping that leFarfleu’s future projects will be more elaborate.
🏅Verdict:

★★✬☆☆ Soft yes
Considering that this is the first game of a solo developer, Obsolete is decent. Where it fails as a platformer (there is nothing here that hasn’t already been done hundreds of times), it makes up for with atmosphere. While not executed to its fullest potential, the concept leFarfelu envisioned shows the makings of a growing developer. I hope to see more games in the future! Since there are some issues (as mentioned above) that can be addressed in coming updates, I would have preferred to give this game a Neutral recommendation for the time being. However, due to the binary recommendation system, I ended up going with Recommended, in good faith that these will be fixed. Your main objective is to navigate through the mostly linear levels unscathed, with no combat to speak of. You do encounter enemies and other hazards on your journey, but your only way to deal with them is to avoid them, since a single touch will obliterate you, sending you back to the start of the level, or your last activated checkpoint. To navigate through the world, you can walk, and jump, and turn into a small blob to traverse tight crawlspaces. In addition to the linear path ahead of you, there are also some houses you can enter, and some secret passages to explore, however, most of those are only used for environmental storytelling, or to hide one of the five Notes you can find throughout the game.
The small amount of available actions means that, if you use external software like the Controller Companion (which is available on Steam), you can easily assign all the game's inputs to the buttons on most controllers, compensating for the lack of that option in the game (I was even able to fit my record video and take screenshot functions to the triggers).

🔥 Difficulty
Most of the game's difficulty comes from the precise timing that some of your jumps require in order to avoid incoming damage (although there is also one fairly tough boss encounter). Some moments can indeed be quite tricky, however, the checkpoints are placed fairly close to those sections, so that the game is sometimes challenging, but never frustrating. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2290436875
📖 Story / Presentation
Obsolete's story is one of decay, despair, melancholy, and the death of a civilization, as well as a small, faint ember of hope for a return to better days. In that, the game's tone reminds me of something like Shattered: Tale of the Forgotten King, or Dark Souls. Most inhabitants of this world have either given up, spending their days doing nothing but stare into the distance, or turned hostile and deformed, trying to take lives to transform themselves back into what they used to be. Unlike those mentioned games, however, and more along the lines of something like Journey, the game doesn't use narration or dialogue to tell you this, but mostly environmental storytelling, as well as the five hidden Notes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2290421644 Despite the simple art-style, Obsolete absolutely sells the somber atmosphere, the desperation and the decay, and the hostility of the world, beautifully. The peaceful creatures you encounter stare blankly into the distance, staying close to derelict houses they can't use anymore; all that remains of whatever flora the world used to have are dried up twigs and thorns; there is no hint of color; the world seems to be in perpetual twilight.
💻 Art-style
As I already mentioned, the art-style of Obsolete is one without colors. Almost everything in the foreground is a solid black, the rest is shades of gray. The pixel art is both cute and effective and the animations are fluid and have been lovingly crafted. Transforming into a little, almost shapeless blob to shuffle along slowly is always a treat and the simplicity works surprisingly well. Any and all emotions on the world's inhabitants is inferred only, but even that works in this game's favor. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2290423269
🎼 Soundtrack
With soft strings and a piano, the soundtrack of the game does a good job of contributing to the overall mood, and, combined with the sound effects and the desolate ambiance noises, works perfectly to that effect.
💯 Performance
As expected, the game didn't manage to challenge my hardware, running at smooth and constant 60fps, while barely using any resources, but I was pleasantly surprised to also encounter not a single bug or glitch. The only (very insignificant) issue I noticed was that the transformation animations always turn you to face to the right (not really a bug, but perhaps a small oversight). Tested with the following setup:

[th]CPU[/th][th]GPU[/th][th]RAM[/th]

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X @3.60 GHzNVIDIA GeForce RTX 206032GB DDR4

🔀 Supports [Alt]+[Tab]: Excellently

✨ Price/Content ratio
For 2.30 € / 2.99 $, you get close to 1 hour of gameplay with little to no replay-value.
💰 Business Model

Classic: Buy the game, play the game. No paid DLCs, items, loot boxes.

📋 Conclusion
With less than an hour of playtime, the price may still seem too high, if you expect at least one hour per Euro/Dollar spent, but Obsolete isn't an expensive game, and kept me very entertained until the end. French solo developer leFarfelu did an extraordinary job for his very first game, and I highly recommend checking it out. Reading "Thanks for playing my first game", at the end of the credits, felt oddly touching and put a smile on my face, and I now can't wait to see what's coming next from the developer. “If you don’t like to change, you become obsolete.” - Sunday Adelaja
💻Description:
Obsolete is a beautiful Indie platformer with really calm yet soothing music. The game was developed by 1 single French developer leFarfelu, which surprises me considering the very polished result. It offers a charming casual experience that will steal your heart.
📖 Setting:

Summary
Obsolete’s story is described through its dark environment. From the very beginning, you notice strange figures that look quite familiar to your character, as well as many abandoned houses that bring lots of questions. The word is slowly degrading and you need to find answers!
Narration
The beautiful aspect of the game is the mysteries revolved around it. During your small adventure, you can find notes that provide information about places your encounter. Even though the said lore is very brief, it is quite open to interpretation that's worth pondering over.
🕹️ Gameplay:
The game is characterized by its heavy use of jumping and climbing, classic features of a traditional platformer game:
Obstacles
Patience and precision are your key weapons here, as deadly spikes and obstacles will get in your way. Furthermore, your character can also turn into a small slimy creature, a useful ability when you come across small gaps. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2836896234
Combat
In this game, combat is practically nonexistent. To be more precise, your main goal is to avoid danger. You will encounter an enemy here and there, but they follow a specific, repetitive pattern that can be easily avoided. Be careful though, as even a single hit can kill you. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2836897264
Death encounters
In case you meet your doom you will either be sent to the very beginning of the level or your most recent checkpoint. The game can be mastered through repetition, so do not worry if you will be making mistakes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2836897787 The lack of difficulty settings makes the adventure non-repeatable. However, considering the low price I am very satisfied.
👁🗨 Visuals:
Personally, I love its simple monotone artstyle. The pixelated background blends perfectly with the soundtrack bringing a mysterious yet calming vibe at the same time. Lots of attention was put into the game, a perfect example is the dust left by the player’s movement. I believe certain tweaks could be added, like flickering lights etc. but that’s just a personal preference.
🎧 Audio:
The peaceful song in the back makes the game even better in so many ways as it truly calms your spirits. The pleasant vibes blend perfectly with the (mentioned above) narration and the background, leaving its special mark that I enjoy. The sound effects are decent; however, I expected more interactions with the word's NPCs, which unfortunately I did not find. Furthermore, audio sliders are missing but that’s just a small detail that can be easily neglected.
🗃️ Side Notes:
Above I have organized the controls for the game. Gamepads are not supported. You have to rely on your keyboard alone for this one.

[th] Action [/th] [th] Comand [/th]

Movement WASD

Enter Houses S

Slime mode R

Save E

Miscellaneous N

📋 Verdict:
For me, Obsolete can be described as a relaxing place after a long busy day. The game is beautiful and very well polished with no technical issues. The only downside is its small duration (close to 50 min). Who knows what other hidden French gems await us shortly? - Bravo, continuez votre excellent travail!!!
My playtime: 2.6h (based on Steam, 100% achievement) Grindy Achievement(s): No. Optional Achievement(s): Yes (4 achievements). Difficult Achievement(s): Yes (~1 achievement).
Intro
Obsolete lets you experience a monochrome world with no purpose. You'll travel around the area, dodging all obstacles along the way, to find out what's happening to the world. Pros: - 9+1 levels to finish - Some levels have more than one exit Cons: - Spikes and jumping pads might be hard to notice at first - Slow animation scene when you start the game - Character moves very slowly
Should you buy this game?
No. If you can spare around 1 or 2 more dollars, you'll be able to buy LIMBO (my review), which has longer playtime and a better atmosphere at a discount.

In-Depth Review

Graphics
The game looks detailed while not being detailed at the same time. It uses basic shapes to shape its environment with additional details such as bricks and grasses to make it more unique. The use of monochromatic color also fits well with the story theme, which I won't spoil due to obvious reasons. However, some obstacles such as spikes and jumping pads are not obvious enough - the spikes might not be noticeable to some people due to their dim color and the jumping pads look too similar to other platforms.
Story
The story only serves as an extra for the game. Short notes are scattered throughout the levels to give you an idea of what's happening to the world. The game has an ending scene, but it was confusing since it never tells us what the character was doing. The story will be clearer if you read the extra notes although it's still lacking details and feel unpolished as a whole. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2386224419
The Game
Gameplay Just like any other platformer games, your goal is to avoid any obstacles and reach the exit. Short and simple tutorials are provided at the first level, which acts as an introductory level in the game. Levels are easy in the beginning, to the point that there isn't anything you need to do except for walking and pushing blocks. It makes the first few levels to be boring, especially with the slow walking speed. Levels will progressively become harder that you need to time your jump to clear them. Although the difficulty is still manageable, checkpoints are available most of the time, allowing you to retry the area again in case you failed. However, they need to be activated manually before you can use them. Some levels have more than one exit, ruining the intended experience of the harder path. Secrets, which are available at some levels, will also lead to an alternative exit. However, these exits tend to be easier than the intended path, even skipping the harder routes in the level. While it might take some time to find these hidden paths, it makes the harder routes to be used less due to its difficulty. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2386224470 Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 35 minutes and spent 18 more minutes retrieving all secrets. The rest of my playtime was spent obtaining an achievement where you had to finish the game without dying. It took me several tries to beat it, mostly because some levels require you to get used to dodging several cannon bullets that are shot at you. While it wasn't that hard once you get used to it, it's still annoying to redo everything from scratch if you die - I felt like there is no reason to add this achievement except for extending the game's playtime. Problems The slow, unskippable animation when you start the game takes a lot of time when I was trying to get the no death achievement.
Specs
Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Conclusion
The game feels more like a flash game with its simple visual and straightforward gameplay. However, the short playtime makes the game feel more like a demo than an actual game. Although I didn't particularly dislike the game, I didn't feel anything good about the game either, which I find important in short games like this. Adding more challenging levels might work better to add more spice to the game, although I'm not sure whether it will be enjoyable or not with the game having a no death run achievement. Since you can get better quality games with the same price range, I think it's better not to recommend the game as of now.
A somber journey.

-Overview-
Obsolete is a simple platformer with a really nice atmosphere and enjoyable gameplay, but it's very short. The first game of its lone developer, it offers a nice, casual experience.
🖱Obsolete only supports keyboard/mouse. Controls cannot be re-bound.🖱

-Gameplay-
Obsolete is a traditional platformer; players move through linear levels, scaling and avoiding a decent variety of obstacles and hazards such as spikes and mobile enemies. A single hit will send players back to the start of the level or to a checkpoint, so a lot of trial and error may be required to progress. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2263172476 Controls are very simple, and feel smooth and precise, but mechanics are few in number; players can morph into a small, blobby form to get through small gaps, but otherwise it's just standard movement. There's little combat to speak of; players must simply avoid all danger, barring a single boss fight, and as the game does not feature generated levels or different difficulty settings, there's little replay value. Regardless, the gameplay experience is an enjoyable one overall.
-Story-
A landscape of twisted creatures and run-down vestiges of past civilisation, Obsolete's story is told through the observable world, and a few short lore snippets that expand on the places they reside in. Said lore is, overall, very brief and conveys only the general themes of the game, but it and the overall story arc are enough to provide food for thought, and that's more than enough for a short, simple game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2263171433
-Technical-

This game was played with the following PC specs: Intel i5-4440 3.10 GHz 16GB DDR3 RAM GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4GB 1680x1050 resolution Windows 10 Game installed on HDD

Visuals:
Obsolete's monochrome art style works very well with the atmosphere created by the soundtrack and narrative themes. Effects and animations are simple but perfectly adequate, as is the overall visual design. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2263165119
Performance:
The game ran at a steady 60fps with no issues, it could run on a toaster. There are no graphics options whatsoever, but the game adapted to my setup without issue.
Audio:
Obsolete has a very nice soundtrack that does well to encapsulate the narrative themes and make the overall experience far more enjoyable. Somber yet peaceful, it's really adds to the experience. Sound effects are decent, and are very simple to match the art style, though I did find the one representing speech to be a little odd. The game has no audio sliders, so Windows' Volume Mixer or equivalent must be used to lower the volume.
Issues:
I encountered no technical issues whatsoever, the game is well polished.
-Summary-
Obsolete is short and sweet, and a decent casual game for price, though it lacks replay value.
Here civilisation is obsolete

Brief Overview
Obsolete is a 2D platformer developed by a singular, first-time indie developer, leFarfelu. The game manages to overcome the limitations linked to being developed by a single person; such as having a short run time, relatively simple game mechanics and a minimalist, pixel art design by integrating them into the game’s character. It manages to be an enjoyable experience which successfully establishes a sombre atmosphere, and the short length means that the simple mechanics do not have time to become worn-out.
🖱 The game can only be played with a mouse/keyboard, and the keys cannot be rebound. 🖱

Gameplay

Basics:
The gameplay of Obsolete is simple with standard platformer controls that are smooth and responsive. There are few, uncomplicated controls for moving, jumping, interacting, and (my favourite) turning into a small blob to move through narrow passageways. I especially like this adorable touch because it is much more satisfying than merely crouching or sliding would have been. There is no combat in the game, and any form of contact with an enemy instantly kills you. Death sends you back to either the start of the level or the nearest save point, which I found were spread out quite fairly. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2284758229 The gameplay is based on platforming, light puzzle-solving and maneuvering through hazards, such as spikes, drops, or enemies, each of which has their own simple, but unique attack patterns. The way forward is always clearly indicated with occasional signs marking the way. There are also some secrets, in the form of notes and hidden areas, concealed within the ruins. The game requires some trial and error, although it still ends up being rather easy and relaxed. The level design is straightforward, which suits the overall style of the game, but limits its replay value. Obsolete is, however, a cute and fun little game which can provide a very enjoyable playthrough.
Story
The story of Obsolete is not told through dialogue, nor narration, but rather inferred through looking at the ruins of a past civilisation and reading the hidden notes. You find yourself in a crumbling world with monsters and decrepit-looking characters and have to piece the rest together yourself. Who are you? How did the world get this way? I found the slight mystery to the story rather intriguing and apt for such a short game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2284752923
Technical

PC Specifications:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600X (3.60 GHz)
16GB DDR4 RAM
Radeon RX 570 8GB (OC)
1920x1080 Resolution
Windows 10

Visuals and Audio:
The visuals are simple with a minimalistic, pixel art approach. When I first saw the game, it brought to mind the art style of Limbo due to both games employing a monochrome environment to establish a sombre atmosphere. The visual style of Obsolete succeeds quite well in conveying this almost oppressive mood. The audio reinforces the visuals with simple, yet fitting, ambient sounds and music. The range of audio feedback when your character or enemies interact with the environment is also fitting. Overall, I liked the sounds and music in Obsolete, except for one sound effect which plays when you enter the ruins of a city (possibly the NPCs). These sounds are a bit harsh and feel out of place to me, but don’t affect the overall game experience. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2284752617
Performance:
The game runs at a full 60fps while using minimum device resources. There are unfortunately no graphic or audio settings to adjust to your preference; however, this was not much of a problem.
Issues:
I encountered no technical issues during my playthrough. The gameplay was smooth and responsive.
Summary
Obsolete is a short, atmospheric 2D platformer game with simple controls. Due to its brief and easy nature, I would not recommend this game to someone looking for a challenge but rather someone who wants to enjoy a quick, relaxing experience. I enjoyed playing Obsolete and find it particularly impressive for a first game produced by a single developer. 🌟 I recommend Obsolete for fans of platformers who are looking for a short, relaxing time. 🌟
For more quality reviews feel free to follow our curator page: Devils in the Detail.
Absolutely loved it!!! for me, it was one of those games that I'll play it again later after updates. It was short a bit tho could finish it within 25-30 minutes but amazingly enjoyable.
Simple but enjoyable atmospheric platformer. Well constructed and fun to play through - can be completed quick if you're good, but the puzzles are fun enough to keep you engaged. https://youtu.be/UwGaUzyxwA8
