Oakrot - it's literally a book

Tl;dr - I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in immersing themselves in an interesting and highly original dystopian world. The world and its creatures are grim, but the author's wit and sharp humour make it an enjoyable read. This is an excellent read. The bulk of the work is dedicated to regaling the reader about the various creatures, institutions and cultural elements of a dark, dystopian future in which human society must survive in a world covered by impenetrable forest and inhabited by an array of deadly and unique creatures. Bursting with the author's trademark cutting wit, sardonic humour, and idiosyncratic creativity, each entry is an entertaining read, starring everything from distorted parodies of anime-style catgirls to shambling monstrosities suffering from endless bone growth - neatly sidestepping many overworked clichéd monsters in favour of Louis' own strikingly original ones. Not only is it a fun reading experience, but it is also an impressive piece of world-building, as Louis effectively constructs this dark (literally - the forest canopy blocks out sunlight) world and its denizens, and even touches upon the social and economic dimensions of human society in this world. It's not all information and world-building however, and Louis does an excellent job at blending character and even some narrative into his work. Effectively utilising different authorial voices, he enables the reader to engage with the characters of his world and their personalities to a surprising extent. Additionally, the narrative sections of the work are well-written and engaging, serving to not only effectively immerse the reader in the world of Oakrot, but also add emotional depth to this excellent work.
