This is an extremely enjoyable game! Beautiful style and cool mechanics! Story wise, I think it is average for an indie game. The gameplay is extremely simple, but it never made me feel bored, and I'm really a fan of the "press the buttons" gameplay style, it tickles my brain in the right way. Even though it's a repetitive cycle, the increase in the difficulty keeps it engaging, as well as the little surprises you might find in your way while watching these squirrels. The game art style is very creative, the simple graphics help to integrate perfectly the ambience of the game. Sadly, I do need to point out a flaw in the story. I wouldn't say it's trash, but the story was building up to something and then suddenly the direction changes completely, leaving many questions behind. Spoiler alert:
Why was that one specific squirrel hiding dynamite? Was the flood caused by the construction of the dam? Why were the squirrels gathering around us in the third chapter? Who is the unknown source founding Viago? Is it the squirrels?
. It raises more questions than answers, in a bad way. Some may argue that that's the fun of these types of games, but I don't think this is the case for Nuts. Besides failing my expectations in that sense, I still found the story enjoyable, it makes you wonder, it makes you think, it makes you want to find all the pieces and put them together, so I would say the narrative does its work. Overall, I do recommend this game (if you're paying low for it), it's a nice experience.
This feels like a game jam project that got spun out into a "full-length" product and shouldn't have been. The gameplay is fine at best, it feels like a tolerable proof-of-concept that wears thin. The atmosphere is nice enough. The story completely fails to resolve anything it starts to set up.
