7/10 No Recollection is an average looking visual novel with a beautifully crafted story about solving a mystery. My takeaway: I truly loved playing and reading No Recollection; easily one of the best written free visual novels I’ve come across. It took me 12 hours to fully complete this title and while I was playing I couldn’t stop reading it. The achievements weren’t too hard and does a great job at rewarding the player to explore different endings. Very well done on the author's part but it is clear the creator isn’t an artist. The biggest gripe I have about No Recollection has to do with some unnecessary dialogue and the visuals as a whole. The game is just a little… ugly. I really hope this gets remastered at some point because I have a feeling it would be a lot more popular. The visuals took away from how well the story is written and pulls the player away from complete immersion. Sometimes the MC can be a little dense in visual novels and this isn’t an exception. There were moments where I felt like yelling at him to be more aware of the obvious but it wasn’t to the point where it became a problem BUT what was a problem is that he often commented on the same things over and over again to the point you’d believe yourself to be blind. Like if something is gray he will tell you it’s gray at least 7 times; part of me wants to replay this just to see how many times he feels the need to tell me the color of something in front of me but despite this increasingly annoying internal dialogue he has, it didn’t take away from the main story for me. The other characters were likable and the more I read the more I grew to like them and their flaws. Pros

Beautifully written.
Almost no spelling or grammar mistakes. I caught 2 in the 12 hours it took me to read it.
Unpredictable! I had theories while I played and almost all of them were wrong.
It touches very real topics in a sensitive way. It isn’t played for laughs or gags.
Multiple endings!
It did make me laugh and tense at times.
Music was fitting and the usage of sound effects also fit.
The game is HUGE. at 150k words it’s well worth looking into.
Achievements!
Can you believe it’s made by one person? Great job!
The foreshadowing was crazy.
Cons

Just a wee bit ugly.
No trigger warning for some of the more sensitive themes in the story.
Just one love interest despite having almost all of the main cast feel like they could be love interests.
A few loose threads concerning random plot points like whether or not we need to eat but it isn’t important enough to make that much of a difference in my opinion.

Despite being about government experiments I didn’t feel like the story was all that corny and generic. If anything some of the fourth wall breaking took away from that and feels extremely out of place in a story like this.
Theory:
I normally never do theories so this is just a testament on how much I loved this title. At the very end there’s an optional epilogue regarding their futures. Jane and the MC end up, in one ending, living with a man named John Smith. John Smith takes them in after hearing their stories and related to them due to his son getting ‘locked away’ 6 years ago. This lines up with an extremely minor character named John Smith you come across living in the facility who was the first to be brought there for experimentation after committing arson. Seeing how Jane was there for presumably 2ish years it’s not impossible the first resident could be John the son. John Smith, the father, also states his son’s name is John which further backed up my assumption since John, the son, also had his last name listed as Smith.. I was really hoping that maybe this ties into a possible second story but maybe I was reading too much into it. An ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT game. This Visual Novel (VN) has multiple endings and hits on deep notes such as
Rape (Jane past), Kidnapping, Murder, Government conspiracies, Betrayal
, and more. I found the characters themselves to be extremely well developed and I even felt emotion during Good ending 1 (no spoilers,) which is a rare thing to happen to me indeed since DDLC+. This game is much more than your regular VN. It has quick time game mechanics that lead to different outcomes and a unique concept altogether, at least unique to what I've played in the past. If I were to offer a bit of criticism, the fact the
hole out of the link is 8ft high
is a bit silly because the characters could have easily worked together by boosting themselves up and
escaping together
. The second criticism I have is about the ending. Although it was a very intriguing take on what happens after
boat ending
cliffhangers, I think you dragged it out a bit much during the
home invasion
sequence. Overall, the developer has worked incredibly hard to make this and it definitely shows. A truly splendid bit of work here and I would pay money for whatever he writes next.
legitimately one of the best VNs ive ever played. it branches out so much and there's so many hidden messages, im trying not to spoil here - it is quite long but its STILL SO GOOD, you really empathise with the characters and you get immersed in their little world and you feel their adrenaline n everything, i cant recommend this enough still wondering what happened to JS though :')

After having spent over 13 hours with this game, sadly I can't say I'd recommend it. I hate to diss what is clearly someone's passion project, but it simply isn't worth the amount of time it takes to complete. It took 5 hours before the story really got going, and once it did, you could see most plot points a mile away. This wouldn't be so bad if not for the fact that each story beat is painfully dragged out. Pros: -good music (although it seems it was not made by the dev. still, good choices) -story had enough going on to make me stay til the end, although at that point it was more of a sunk-cost fallacy - !! apollo justice mentioned !! Cons: -bad pacing. It takes forever for anything to happen, and the protag repeats himself A LOT. I do not need to hear about the dining floor's color scheme every time he's there -
giving the murderer character DID is at best lazy, and at worst offensive to those with DID
-
others have noted this already, but Jane's SA was not handled well. It seemed more like a cheap excuse to have her kill people rather than an incredibly serious, life-changing event. Not to mention, the protag's reaction to it shows a lot of immaturity. He seems almost more surprised that she had a bf than that she was SA'ed. And, the fact that he's like "omg i get to see her bewbs :0 ??" RIGHT AFTER hearing her story is really, really gross
-the protag is immature and often infuriating to listen to, and the romance feels forced to me -what purpose did Andy and Veronica serve as characters? it seems like the story would be exactly the same if they weren't there So yeah. I was really hopeful after reading other reviews that the story would make up for any issues it had, but I don't think it does.
Yes.
It is a little rough around the edges, but I’d say it’s still good. Especially for someone’s first game and novel, this is quite a lot for one person to have made.
너무 어려워요...그리고 말이 많아요 못깸.ㅠㅠㅠ
