NinNinDays, developed by qureate in collaboration with iMel Inc. and published by qureate and DLsite, is a lighthearted romantic visual novel that blends slice-of-life storytelling with a playful touch of fantasy. The game follows the story of a young man living a mundane life in Akihabara who suddenly encounters Sumire, a cheerful and slightly naïve ninja-in-training who ends up staying with him. What begins as an unusual meeting quickly turns into a cohabitation comedy filled with charming, romantic, and occasionally mischievous moments. True to qureate’s established style, NinNinDays leans heavily into fan service and character-driven humor, presenting itself more as an interactive anime episode than a traditional narrative-heavy visual novel. Visually, NinNinDays stands out among similar titles through its use of smooth Live2D animation that gives characters subtle motion and expression, adding a layer of realism to the standard static-sprite format. The artwork is vibrant and highly polished, showcasing professional character designs that align with the game’s light romantic tone. Sumire’s design in particular captures her personality perfectly—innocent yet energetic, with a hint of mischief that keeps her interactions engaging. Background art depicts the streets and interiors of Akihabara with a soft, pastel aesthetic that gives the setting a welcoming atmosphere. The Japanese voice acting adds authenticity to each scene, and the soundtrack complements the game’s relaxed and comedic tone, shifting between playful melodies during humorous exchanges and gentler tunes during more emotional moments. Together, these elements create an inviting and consistently charming atmosphere that makes the short runtime more enjoyable. The gameplay of NinNinDays follows a traditional visual novel format focused on reading through dialogue and making occasional choices that determine the story’s progression. The branching narrative is simple but effective, allowing players to experience multiple endings based on the nature of their interactions with Sumire. The relationship between the protagonist and Sumire evolves gradually through a mixture of lighthearted comedy and heartfelt exchanges, with the game balancing flirtation and genuine emotional warmth. While the ninja theme serves more as a backdrop than a central narrative driver, it provides amusing context for Sumire’s quirky behavior—her earnest attempts to apply ninja skills in everyday modern life lead to several comedic situations. The story’s pacing is brisk, ensuring that scenes move quickly without dragging, which makes it accessible to casual readers or those new to visual novels. Despite its charm, NinNinDays is not without flaws. The biggest drawback is its short length—most players can complete the entire game within three to four hours, depending on reading speed and choice exploration. This brevity leaves limited room for deep character development or complex storytelling. The narrative, while pleasant, tends to stay on the surface, relying more on personality-driven appeal than intricate plotlines. The English localization has also drawn criticism for awkward phrasing and occasional grammatical errors, which can disrupt immersion for players reading in English. Some of the branching choices feel minor or arbitrary, offering limited replay incentive beyond unlocking CG scenes or alternate endings. These shortcomings make the game feel more like an extended visual vignette than a fully realized story, though its compactness can also be a virtue for those seeking a short, relaxing experience. Where NinNinDays truly succeeds is in its tone and presentation. The relationship between the protagonist and Sumire is handled with a sense of sincerity beneath the comedic and fan-service moments. There are touching instances where Sumire’s innocence and determination shine through, revealing a character who, despite her fantastical background, experiences the same vulnerabilities and desires as any ordinary person. The game’s humor is often wholesome and light rather than crude, which helps maintain a charming balance between playfulness and affection. The dialogue, while occasionally simplistic, captures the awkward sweetness of two people gradually learning about one another, and by the end, the player is likely to feel a genuine fondness for Sumire’s warmth and optimism. Overall, NinNinDays delivers a pleasant, visually engaging, and emotionally gentle experience that caters to fans of romantic visual novels with anime-style storytelling. It does not strive for narrative complexity or psychological depth, but it excels in what it sets out to do: provide a short, heartwarming story centered on companionship, humor, and attraction. Its combination of expressive artwork, likable characters, and casual pacing makes it a good entry point for newcomers to the genre and a comforting diversion for veterans seeking something light. While its short length and imperfect localization prevent it from reaching the heights of more ambitious visual novels, it remains an enjoyable, feel-good story that succeeds through charm and sincerity. For players who appreciate cozy romance wrapped in playful ninja-themed antics, NinNinDays is a delightful, if brief, escape into a colorful and affectionate world. Rating: 8/10
