"AWESOMELY TRAUMATIZING" So there I was, just minding my own business, driving through a mountainous highway. I wasn't quite sure what I was running from, or exactly sure where I was going. I was admiring the beautiful sky, excellent lighting effects and great overall graphical presentation. I was navigating the treacherous highway and unpredictable traffic pattern, slowly falling into a driving rhythm guided by the soundtrack of chill electronic beats held together with adrenaline filled undertones. My will to survive was at an all time high. I dodged left around a vehicle, then right around a vehicle. I could clearly hear the sound of the air rushing around me as I narrowly missed multiple commuters, each miss slightly closer than the last. After clearing a few of these early morning drivers driving to who knows where, I let out a sigh of relief. No traffic was in sight - only me, the open road, the beautiful scenery and the mesmerizing music. I was 2 miles in to a 6 mile trek, and I knew the worst was behind me. I came around a slight right kink in the road, with my high beams on to increase visibility ahead. The road straightened out, and I began to make my way up a small hill in the path. Up ahead, I could see a bright beam of light - I flashed my brights on, then off, to try and signal the other driver to do the same. The light kept getting brighter and was nearly encompassing my entire screen at this point. I made my way to the far right of the road to give them as much room as possible, with no knowledge of the other driver's level of competence. Just as I was cresting the hill, BOOM!!!! My heart nearly stopped. My car did stop - and shortly after I lifted my hands off of my Logitech G29, which is superbly supported in this game. I took a 1 minute break to allow my heart rate to slow down. I grabbed a clip of the incident to confirm what I had already suspected - as I crested the hill, the unpredictable computer driver moved into my lane at the last possible moment. We had a head on collision at over 100 MPH. The image of that burgundy SUV is now forever burned into my retinas. I have awoken in screaming agony every night since the incident. My heart has still not recovered, and most likely never will. 11/10 would crash head on into a computer player again!
Like this Review? Follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
You have the choice of two game modes, Story and Sandbox, selecting the story you will then have the options of choosing the Transmission (Manual or Automatic) and the Colour of your car. Your game begins with the ringing of your phone, upon answering you find out that it’s one of your family. They never call you, not even to say that everything is fine, so you know that something is up. You say you’re on your way, and that you’re not going to change your mind. After saying you’ll drive safe you head off into the night, maybe you’ll beat your previous best time this time. It’s 12.23 am and before you, a long, dark and winding road leading to your destination. Your destination is split into many stages of varying distances. Driving from one destination to another down a road which is dimly lit only by the short distance of your headlights and moonlight. The object of the game is to complete each stage as fast as possible. You’ll drive along the road avoiding any obstacles in your way. There isn’t always anything on the roads and you may think that this would make it easier to complete that stage. However, it only takes one small error and you’ll find yourself wrapped around a cactus, road sign or rolling down the road sideways until your car comes to a stop upside down. It can be a bit frustrating especially when you’re near the end of your current stage and your car slides off the road slightly and you hit the bumps and that’s it, it’s game over. When this happens you have three options, forget about that run and start over again, save that run and start over again or quit for now and start again later. You may think I’ll just drive at a steady pace so I won’t slide off the road or hit anything as you race to the finish. However, if you drive too slowly then you’ll have an indication in the bottom right of your car's dashboard telling you to hurry up, it will also flash red, you will also hear a heartbeat sound. If this continues for too long then your current stage will end and you’ll have to start that stage again from the start. You can find your Game Stats in the Options for the following, Story Completed, Story Best Time, Drives Completed, Crashes, Too Slows, Top Speed, Distance, Drive Time and Cacti Hit. In the options there’s settings for Graphics - V-Sync, Antialiasing, Draw Distance, Sky, Snow, Grass, Terrain Quality and Screenshot. Resolution, Sound – Master, Engine, Music, Road, Crash, Weather Volume Sliders and Recommended. Controls - Key Binds and Gamepad Buttons and Calibrate. I was playing using an Xbox One wireless controller and it worked fine for the most part. I did have to lower the sensitivity of my gamepad’s joystick to be able to control the car more smoothly. Before lowering sensitivity, it acted like it the brakes would lock up and the bounce the car in the direction of me steering every time I tapped the joystick to turn or straighten up. Lowering the sensitivity lowered this action and made it a little bit smoother in steering. I did find the driving a little boring and slow, my top speed so far is 124 mph but I never had the feeling of reaching that speed. There is an Infinity Sandbox game mode which I haven’t tried so far. In this game mode though you can set the games settings, road type, road width, traffic etcetera. Positives + Nice graphics + Two game modes + Randomly generated stages + Has achievements Negatives - A bit slow - Frustrating at times - No cards currently Race through the night on randomly generated stages in Story mode, how far you can go in the Infinite Sandbox mode in the road-lite game, Nightvision: Drive Forever 6/10
Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB! No wheel support. Wow. You're still reading? Okay, well here's a longer review: Nightvision is definitely not ready for prime time yet, and I could only recommend it to someone if it was at a 50% discount. As mentioned above there isn't wheel support, and there isn't even mouse support to navigate menus! You have to use the arrow keys (or D pad on a controller) to move around and select things. Changing keybindings is the weirdest mechanic I've ever seen. You click the button, click replace, wait for a timer to end, click the desired button, and confirm. But what about the actual driving? That's the whole point, anyway. Well it works, but even with a controller it feels like you're driving with WASD instead of a joystick. Very jerky turning, even after moving the steering slider all the way down. I've played NFS, Forza, Project Cars, Dirt, and even GTA5 so I'm familiar with both simulation AND arcade driving. This is easily well below all of them (in Nightvision's defense though, they never claimed to be a sim! I'm not comparing it to Forza or Project Cars). Also, the manual shifting is a complete mess. I'm redlining and shifting gears staying at the top of the tach... yet my drive is still cut short because I'm "too slow"? I'm no pro sim-racer, but I'm not sure about that one guys. I'll revisit this game next year!
Split/Second costs just as much. Does this game looks like Split/Second? Is it just as fun(or fun at all?) Boring gameplay, no feeling of speed, unskippable cutscenes, one texture for the whole world - $1 at most
What are you doing procrastinating by reading the reviews? Buy it already! I love this game, and I shall tell you why, if you've read this far but still not bought it... Story mode gently eases you in to the high speed mountain driving experience. The difficulty starts to ramp up as you progress through the film noir style story mode, and new challenges are introduced gradually as you progress: with more winding roads, beautiful but treacherous weather conditions, and increasing traffic all coupled with the need to keep your speed up at all times. I have played this on my Logitech G25, a PS4 controller and the keyboard, and I'll happily use any of them (whether I'm settling down for a longer gaming session dictates whether I can be bothered to get the wheel set up...!) The music fits the game perfectly. It's not the sort of music I would personally listen to in the car (or the kitchen), but in-game it makes total sense to me and definitely adds to the experience in a really positive way. The real gem in this game for me is Sandbox mode. As you progress through story mode - which is a blast itself - you unlock hidden graphical modes that you can access in the already ridiculously flexible sandbox mode. I won't spoil what these are, but they are great fun to play (at least the ones I've unlocked so far, and I think there are lots more!) Sandbox mode itself is great: want to have an easy daytime jaunt on some gently curving mountain roads? Sure. Want to challenge yourself in the sleet, snow and thunderstorms at night with loads of traffic on narrow, tightly curving mountain passes? Absolutely. AND you can challenge others to beat your time by sharing posting your game summary at the end of the level to the active Discord server, and other players can simply enter the 4-word passphrase to get playing exactly the same level you just did. In summary: It looks great It sounds great It plays great.
Im not sure what to say about this... The idea is great the execution not so much. -The car handling: so i have driven about 400k km in my life and i do know this is a game, but this car feels more like a boat on the road. Everytime you steer the boot of the car is just swiping all over the road which would not be the problem if the car would feel powerful enough to drift. But it barely feels powerful to me. -The highbeams: i dont get why the dev decided that the highbeam button needs to be held all the time when you want to have highbeam, i would make it switch on and off like a real car. Also the other cars are always blinking with their highbeams when you got yours on. No problem there right? Well. They are behind the ground and you can see cars behind the next corner already flash their highbeams even if they can not see you and you can not see their car. That killed the immersion for me. -The menu: if you go to settings and close the menu again the settings menu stays open, so go back in the menu and press "done" to close this first and then go back to the game. Generally i dont get the Menu, i would rather like concrete and specific text what the button is doing, sure you will found out that "this is just a memory" will let you retry the level after failing but i don't feel it. As stated above the game does not take the immersion really serious anyway so why go for these text.... -The immersion: you are driving for 2-3-4miles according to the computer in the car yet you are only going 2 miles each time on the map. Maybe i got it wrong. Also i hate the fading out of the level, you never know when it ends and when it ends it is just happening without any hint what is going on "You made it" Nice, but i was in a corner and then you see the car crashing in the back. So all in all i do not feel this game is worth 12,24€ and without sale i would not consider it.
Take a shot every time you crash on random. Good luck
I've been following this game since it's inception. Hoodust has been working on this for a few years. What impresses me most is that he listens to user feedback sincerely. Every idea is considered and responded to. This game is a lot of fun as a result. The weather and clouds is amazing. You'll never get bored. If you have an idea or feedback, just reach out to hoodust, you'll likely get a response in a few days at most. What are you waiting for? Go buy this game already!
