Really liking NeonCode, as a fan of narrative games and the original Blade Runner movie. For an indie game, there is a lot of great stuff here. It's an adventure game, with first-person perspective, with puzzle elements. Truly rough around the edges, with checkpoint savings, some flashing textures, and reused model assets, but the graphics are really quality, with fog and lighting effects, which make up the difference. Best part is how the game really hits the genre perfectly, in the visuals and story, more than so than even other games from bigger developers. This is a very short game, but it is an immersive environment, so take your time exploring it. Played on ubuntu linux with radeon mesa drivers, and impressed with the developer support in the forum fixing linux-related issues. Check it out.

[th]Follow my curator for more great game recommendations![/th]

NeonCode is a short Cyberpunk styled adventure game set in a fully explorable 3D world. You play Craig Williams, a suspended cop looking to make ends meet when he hears a shot in the distance and goes to investigate. Full of nods and winks to the genre and other Sci-fi, Duerden Lane, Commander Shepard appears on the 20 credit note (well how else would you make purchases from your favourite store on the citadel?), this rendition of what appears to be future Miami/Vice City is an imaginative place. The city and surrounds are surprisingly large with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. In fact, more game and even sub-quests could easily have been accommodated without too much reuse of locations. The English translation could probably use an improvement though and the text is pretty small at high resolutions. Made largely with free unity assets repetition is common. The same hover-car constantly runs the same loop and only a few body models are used. The graphics while pretty basic still allow for a wonderful atmosphere of night time, fog and neon, the staples of the Cyberpunk genre. The game also has a fantastic original soundtrack that should probably be added as a DLC. For all the faults, there is plenty of fun to be had and with the admirable ambition present, it's well worth the price. There's even a car chase!

Neon soaked noir. The gameplay is essentially a 3D hidden object game. The story is serviceable but could definitely use some polish and better English localization. Definitely needs voice acting. The aesthetic is great, I love cyberpunk. Priced about right. https://youtu.be/JkbxW31hH_E
NeonCode is surprisingly good for how short it is, although it is a teensy bit janky. Most of the tasks your PI character sets out to do are straightforward, but one required a bit of searching through Guides on the hub. Basically, don't have your expectations set too high and you'll enjoy this title. Visually this game looks very nice for a budget title, with an appropriately fog-drenched cyberpunk city featuring for most of the setting. You'll creep down dark alleys, past crumbling buildings, and through areas of thumping music as well as eerie silence. The PI has a car which controls decently, and your viewpoint has more of a whole-body bob effect going on while walking that's way less disorienting than standard head bob. Achievement hunters, you'll be happy to note all work here and all are earned simply by playing the game. Note the one for fedora collecting is bugged, simply click on the first found hat 5 times to unlock it (I did not find more than 2 hats total so am unsure if they're all there to find actually). You're looking at around 80 minutes for completion. Recommended at list price, I honestly feel a little bad I didn't pay more for this one. The small bit of engrish and a few spelling mistakes don't hamper NeonCode in the least.
From the pictures it might seem like an interesting game but it lack some depth. Objectives consist of running back and forth in kind of dark and futuristic scenery. Story is rather shallow but overall concept would be great if not broken by magnitude of bugs.
Alright... This game is not totally bad, but still... The overall setting and art-style is really cool and classic cyberpunk, which I really like.... ...but the graphic is just to bad; even if the general style is awesome, the animations (if even existent) are horrible, the few effects you see would have been bad even in the year 2000. Theres a really big map to explore... ...but there is nothing fun to do on that big map besides following the quest markers. The story has some potential... ...but the story is so basic without more then the minimum storytelling; all potential wasted. The game has some great synth-wave tracks... ...but 90% of the game (roaming around the City) you hear just a boring ambient track. Beside this, the gameplay experience really sucks. Driving the car never felt that bad; detective work is basically running hysterical around and click everything since there are no real hints where to look; shooting your gun is... yeah, no word to describe that. And there is zero voice acting at all, which is really bad for the atmosphere... It is a cool game if you remeber that it was developed basically by one guy in his spare time... But is it worth 1 Dollar? Nope. Is it fun? Not really. Can I recommend? Definitly not.
Exactly what it says on the tin: "a one hour long cyberpunk-retro adventure game". The gameplay is a bit lacking, but the overall experience is worth the price of admission. Note: The game initially failed to launch on Linux because it couldn't find the included Mono library. This is because it looks in the directory NeonCode_Data, while the file is in neoncode_Data. Unlike Windows, most Linux file systems are case sensitive. The developer can fix this by making sure the paths have consistent capitalization. Users can fix this by creating a symlink, for example:
ln -s ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/NeonCode/{neoncode,NeonCode}_Data
Full disclosure, I wrote some of the music that appears in the game (final track in the credits). I enjoyed my time with this game, for $1 you can't really go wrong if you like the cyberpunk genre. There is definitely a bit of polish missing, but if you go into it expecting a game from a single developer, I don't think you'll be disappointed. There were genuinely moments where I thought "this is really pretty," not even for an indie game -- just in general. The gameplay is a bit underwhelming. I would say if you like the visual style of the screenshots, it might be worth picking up just to immerse yourself in the world for an hour or so.
An admirable effort from a solo developer, but sadly I cannot in my right mind recommend the game in its current state.
The good:
➕ Great cyberpunk atmosphere — both the visuals and sounds are quite good for a one-person project ➕ I could play the game in Hungarian :)
Mixed:
〰 There is a sprint key (Shift), but the game doesn't tell you about it.
The bad:
➖ I got softlocked by a buggy quest, and even reloading the "last save" (more on this later) didn't fix it. It's the one to repair your car. First I came across the fuel part of the quest, and only after I did that, I found where to buy a battery. After installing the battery, the car wasn't willing to accept the fuel. I reloaded, did the quest in the right order, the character even commented that he got the fuel, but the game just doesn't do anything when I interact with the car while holding the fuel can. ➖ The game doesn't let the player save whenever they want, but saves at certain points without any indication. I reloaded twice to try to fix the bugged-out quest, and it always erased some of my subsequent quest progress. ➖ The game is very performance-heavy for such a small location. I had to turn the quality down even on a fairly good gaming PC, and it only stopped killing my fans when I limited the game's FPS via my GPU's software. ➖ The achievements are quite buggy — I had to shoot 3 crime scene drones before that achi unlocked, while the fedora one you can get by just repeatedly clicking on the same fedora.
Final thoughts:
I like the game's vibe and adventure gameplay, but it would need quite a bit of bugfixing to be properly playable and enjoyable.
This game gave me a terrible case of motion sickness. I don't know if was because of the poor optimization, the constant stuttering and dropping frames, the head bob, the weird (and non-adjustable) mouse acceleration, the general awkwardness of movement, or some combination of all those factors. I have never experienced this with any other game, but it was so bad that I thought I had food poisoning until I realized I was getting sick every time I moved or turned my head in-game to look at something. One of the other negative reviews mentioned this as well, so it was not just me. I do appreciate the developer's honesty in describing this game. He says right on the store page: "This game made as an experiment. I wanted to see, what quality can be achieved from free assets ,,, This is a B game made by one man." Yes, that is exactly what this game is, and for a one-man effort it is not bad, however it is difficult to recommend a walking simulator where the very act of walking is so painful. I can see how some people might like it, but be warned: If you are at all susceptible to motion sickness in first person games then you will probably not be able to play this one.
