Nelumbra is a roguelite action experience that blends survival mechanics, rapid combat, and a mysterious narrative into a compact yet engaging package. Developed and published by Eleven Dusks Studios, the game places players in the role of the Light Bearer, an individual trapped within an endless cycle of rebirth and conflict. From the outset, the premise revolves around uncovering fragments of a forgotten past while battling increasingly dangerous celestial threats. Rather than relying on extensive dialogue or cinematic storytelling, the game allows its themes of memory, fate, and repetition to emerge naturally through gameplay progression and repeated runs. The most distinctive aspect of Nelumbra is its combat system. While many roguelites emphasize conventional weapon attacks, this title introduces a strong focus on mobility through an offensive dash mechanic. Movement is not simply a way to avoid damage; it becomes a primary tool for survival and destruction. Dashing through enemy formations feels rewarding and requires constant awareness of positioning, especially when the screen becomes crowded with hostile forces. The combat strikes a satisfying balance between accessibility and skill, giving players enough room to experiment while still demanding quick reflexes and smart decision-making. A major contributor to the game's atmosphere is the ever-present battle against darkness. As players progress through a run, the surrounding light gradually fades, creating a sense of urgency that extends beyond enemy encounters. This mechanic is more than a visual effect—it actively shapes the way players navigate arenas and approach combat situations. The shrinking visibility adds tension to every encounter and reinforces the feeling that the world itself is working against the player. It is a clever design choice that helps separate Nelumbra from many other entries in the genre. Replayability is driven by a wide assortment of artifacts and upgrades that can dramatically alter a character's performance. Each run offers opportunities to create unique combinations, encouraging experimentation with different playstyles. Some upgrades strengthen offensive abilities, while others enhance mobility or introduce unusual effects that can completely change the flow of combat. Discovering powerful synergies becomes one of the game's greatest pleasures, as players gradually learn which combinations best complement their preferred strategies. Progression outside individual runs also gives players a reason to keep returning. Weapons can be upgraded over time, and multiple playable characters provide alternative approaches to combat. Each character brings subtle differences that encourage experimentation and extend the game's longevity. Cosmetic rewards and unlockables further support the sense of progression, offering additional goals beyond simply reaching the end of a run. Visually, Nelumbra delivers an appealing presentation that combines stylized pixel-inspired artwork with modern lighting effects. The contrast between light and darkness is used effectively throughout the experience, creating scenes that are both attractive and functional from a gameplay perspective. Enemy designs are easy to distinguish even during chaotic moments, and the visual effects associated with abilities help combat feel impactful without overwhelming the player. The soundtrack complements the atmosphere well, enhancing the mysterious and otherworldly tone that defines the adventure. The game's structure is also well suited to shorter play sessions. Runs are designed to be relatively concise, making it easy to jump in for a quick attempt while still feeling a sense of accomplishment. This pacing works particularly well for players who enjoy roguelites but may not always have time for lengthy sessions. At the same time, the layered progression systems ensure that even unsuccessful runs contribute to long-term advancement. Despite its strengths, Nelumbra may not appeal equally to all audiences. The story is intentionally cryptic, which can make it difficult for players seeking a more direct narrative connection. The emphasis on repeated attempts and mastery-based progression may also feel demanding for those unfamiliar with roguelite design. Additionally, much of the game's depth comes from learning upgrade interactions and refining movement skills, meaning some patience is required before its systems fully reveal their potential. Overall, Nelumbra succeeds as a creative and atmospheric roguelite that brings several fresh ideas to a highly competitive genre. Its blend of dash-focused combat, dynamic darkness mechanics, meaningful build customization, and strong audiovisual presentation creates an experience that feels both challenging and rewarding. While it may require some dedication to fully appreciate its systems, players who enjoy action-heavy roguelites with high replay value will likely find plenty to enjoy. Eleven Dusks Studios has crafted a memorable adventure that stands out through its unique mechanics and strong thematic identity. Rating: 7/10
Having fun with this one. You'll navigate in a cryptic world trying understanding your fate while desintegrating hordes of enemies. Multiple characters/builds available and real satisfying moments when combining your dashes with all the power ups.
I've been enjoying my time with this one. There's just enough currency coming in to provide a steady amount of unlocks, and the differing attack styles of each character lead to different tactics and preferences that can really alter how you're playing the game (especially if you're on a ranged character and the option to create duplicates comes up). I can safely say I'm getting more than my money's worth, and hope to see more people pick this up.
