Necrosis, developed and published by BlackHawk Games, is an indie first-person shooter that embraces fast, arcade-style gunplay while offering a surprisingly broad set of multiplayer modes and weapon customization options. Rather than positioning itself as a hyper-realistic tactical shooter, Necrosis leans into straightforward action, accessible controls, and a structure that encourages quick matches and steady progression. It occupies a space reminiscent of classic arena shooters, with modern touches layered on top. At its core, Necrosis is built around multiplayer combat. The game features several traditional PvP modes, including Free-for-All, Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Elimination. These modes follow familiar FPS formulas, focusing on reflex-driven firefights and map control rather than heavy tactical coordination. Movement is responsive, weapons feel punchy, and the pacing is brisk, allowing matches to flow quickly without extended downtime. Even when online activity is low, the inclusion of bot opponents ensures that matches remain accessible to solo players. One of the game’s most notable strengths is its extensive arsenal. With over 50 unlockable weapons spanning assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, and more exotic firearms, Necrosis offers substantial variety for a game of its scale. Players can customize weapons with attachments such as scopes and muzzles, adding a sense of progression and personalization. This loadout system encourages experimentation, allowing players to find combinations that suit their preferred playstyle, whether aggressive close-quarters combat or longer-range engagements. Beyond competitive PvP, Necrosis introduces cooperative gameplay through its Plague mode. In this survival-style mode, players face waves of zombies and escalating boss encounters. The mode shifts the tone from competitive shooting to chaotic teamwork, emphasizing survival and coordination. While not as complex as dedicated zombie survival franchises, it provides a refreshing alternative to standard deathmatch formats and adds replay value. Visually, Necrosis adopts a functional approach. Environments are detailed enough to maintain immersion but avoid the graphical demands of larger AAA titles. Maps emphasize clarity and navigability, supporting the fast pace of combat. Character models and weapon animations are straightforward but effective, prioritizing responsiveness over spectacle. The aesthetic overall feels reminiscent of mid-tier shooters from previous generations, which may appeal to players seeking a more traditional FPS atmosphere. Audio design complements the gameplay with sharp gunfire effects and immediate feedback. Weapon sounds carry enough impact to reinforce combat intensity, while ambient sounds remain understated. The soundscape does not aim for cinematic immersion but instead supports the arcade tone of rapid engagements and consistent action. The game’s progression system rewards consistent play. Experience points unlock new weapons and attachments, providing tangible goals for players who invest time into mastering the mechanics. While the leveling system is not deeply layered, it offers enough incentive to keep players engaged across multiple sessions. Achievements and stat tracking further reinforce the sense of progression. However, Necrosis faces challenges common to indie multiplayer shooters. Its online player base has remained relatively small, which can limit matchmaking opportunities during off-peak hours. The reliance on bots helps mitigate this issue, but competitive players seeking a vibrant online community may find the ecosystem modest. Additionally, while weapon variety is impressive, the overall map pool and gameplay modes may feel repetitive after extended play. Ultimately, Necrosis succeeds as a compact and accessible FPS that delivers solid arcade-style combat and generous weapon customization. It does not attempt to compete directly with large-scale shooter franchises, but it provides a complete package for players seeking straightforward multiplayer action with cooperative elements. Its strengths lie in its variety of modes, approachable mechanics, and progression system, making it a viable option for fans of classic arena shooters who value gameplay substance over spectacle.
