Necro Wars is a mid-range turn-based strategy game that aren't exactly difficult to play for someone who's a huge fan of turn-based games. The gameplay here includes several interesting, though not entirely unique, game mechanics that are designed to either help you or your opponent on the battlefield, such as height advantage, the weather, and terrain advantage, in addition to using the correct units to counter your enemies (unit type advantage).
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1Nh-P0aXEY That being said, what really makes Necro Wars so unique to me is the way it links the remaining health of your unit to the damage it can deal. Units that are injured or half-dead can't possibly deal as much damage as a unit with full health, and I never thought something so simple could be so intriguing. There are also several generals for you to choose from - you can only bring one with you into combat. Different generals offer different perks and depending on your needs, you might want to bring the most suitable one. Of course, the game isn't all pre-designed levels with a fixed number of troops to order around. As you play, you'll unlock buildings like barracks that you can then use to recruit new units to your army. The coins you need to do the recruitment is passively earned on a turn-by-turn basis and the amount may vary depending on the several factors. Note that you can't build the buildings yourself but you can capture unaffiliated ones or even enemy-controlled buildings. Different units even have different building-capture rates and naturally, the more expensive units will capture buildings faster - After all, every turn counts! Note that unlike some of the more in-depth turn-based strategy, the direction your unit is facing doesn't matter in this game and hence, there's no flanking bonus. Every hit your units make is a guaranteed hit in this game - there are no misses. Units can also move pass other units in front of them as long as they are friendlies but not if the unit in front of them is an enemy.
Pros
+ Most early levels are simple enough, mainly because the AI will usually turn tail whenever its health is lower than half. In fact, you can learn some strategy by observing how the AI plays the game but the trick is to use it when it's suitable to the situation at hand. + Unique gameplay mechanics - Tying health to damage dealt is quite the brilliant idea! + Three game modes - Campaign, Challenge and Wargame. All of them are fun to play! + Multiple unit types; each with their own advantages. + Each level is fairly short. Due to this, I think the game would work well on the mobile platform too. + Considering the content this game has, the price is right! + Thumbs-up for the autosave! I think it helped me bypass a bug I encountered in the Wargame mode. + Love the cutesy graphics too!
Cons/Feedback
- BUG - Sometimes, the interface will disappear whether I've just entered a new game (as seen in the video) or when I'm in the middle of a game (happened to me in Challenge 2, Turn 1). When this bug happens, there's no way to exit the game except to use Alt+F4. - BUG - For some reason, the volume is turned off by default? - In Challenge and Wargame modes, it would be nice to be able to view each CO's profile so we can choose the right one - Could add in different AI difficulties. So far, I think the default AI is on "Easy"/"Normal" mode? - Could add a bit more to the tutorial explaining things like you can heal your units (only once?) by returning them to the barracks and that your unit will gain a small heal if they level up. I'm also not entirely sure about this but it seems like Rogues can get heals for every hit they do? - Could use a bit more transparency regarding certain details like the different building-capture rates for each type of unit or the effects of certain weather on all units. - Add a mark beside the challenges/wargames that we've already completed? - You could also add in a performance indicator or additional yet optional objectives, like a 3 star rating system. For example, if you completed a level with no deaths on your part = 1 star. This will give the previous levels a bit more replayability for those who want a bit more challenge.
Overall
I can't speak on behalf of hardcore fans of turn-based strategy games, but for a midcore gamer who happens to be a fan of the genre, Necro Wars is a very entertaining game that will definitely keep me engaged for hours on end. It's just fun and relaxing to play without being too difficult, but maybe the difficult will ramp up quite a bit when I advance further in the game and unlock even more unit types. Turn based strategy with interesting story Gameplay : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-xZReqLl-I
Necro Wars is amazing little turn-based strategy indie game. Firstly game is easy to let you learn how to play but then, after few stages game is much more difficult and you really need to think how to beat your oponent. Progression in this game is great, you start with one hero to choose and one unit, but with every next stage you can unlock new units and heroes to play. If you are looking for easy to learn but actually very complex strategy game then Necro Wars is something for you.
Haven't played a ton of the game, but i feel like this is a pretty big "what you see is what you get" kinda deal, and the recommendation is similarly easy. Do you like Advanced Wars? If yes, you will like Necro Wars. It's as simple as that. I actually want to get a positive review out there just because I think the game deserves it. Well worth the asking price, just to get some of this style of game on PC. Biggest complaints I would have to bring up is a lack of a map editor, which sin't really a huge deal but is something I think this genre really benefits from, and sometimes clicking on a unit that is standing on a mountain is a little awkward.
a really niifty strategy game. the graphics are honestly really charming. it's also at a good price.
I normally don't play a lot of turn-based strategy games but I definitely enjoy this one. It's very simple to learn and still offers a challenge. If you are new to turn-based strategy games this one is definitely a great starting place and I'm sure die-hard fans of the genre can also appreciate this game. If you are interested in some gameplay here is a link to my first let's play of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eex7vrgXZtM&t=29s
