A Bird's Eye View Curator 🦜
Introduction
Fair warning at the start, the developer has been very kind to reach out to me as a Curator to leave a review for this game and despite me being extremely thankful that they did, this review is and will stay my personal honest opinion of the game. P.S. Considering the game this review might be a bit more of a 'deepdive' than normal. Nebula Within is an Asteroids style game with a focus on zenning out and just enjoying the game and yourself with an overarching theme of motivation and relaxation.
Visuals and Mechanics
The visuals are gorgeous not even 8-bit old-school but larval gaming line art designs like the original Asteroids boosted with a lot of colour and unique personality. As for the mechanics it's as simple as moving around dodging objects, shooting them to get rid of them and collecting power-ups to get stronger. A perfect bevy of mechanics to zen out to.
Gameplay
Nebula Within is different and quirky right from the get go including how the menu works and a selection of very unique enemies and bosses but immediately returns to a highly familiar gameplay when starting a stage. As for the stages they are way longer than I expected, yet not too hard which adds to the feeling of just 'melting away' and chipping away at the stage without thinking too much about it. The powerups being, with a lack of me having a better description for them, 'mental state buzzwords' (like Confidence, Safety and Reassurance) is a really cool idea to keep you in the whole identity of Nebula Within. While playing the game I did here and there feel a bit, so to say overwhelmed by what was going on and surprised by enemies yet unknown however with all the power-ups you did make it through which to me felt like the perfect analogy to real life where you might feel uncertainty or be overwhelmed yet there's always your own power-ups to deal with them like friends and family. I however don't feel too off kilter with that assessment as the sparkly enemies carrying bad thoughts are much harder to beat than the regular enemies.
Soundtrack
The Soundtrack and sound design to Nebula Within is spot on! It's chill and relaxing and totally adds to the vibe of just playing the game and letting things go for the moment. At some points the soundtrack even reminded me of 'Reverie' in Sayonara Wild Hearts which is always a good thing to be associated with.
Conclusion
The overarching theme of mental health is very much appreciated as I deal with a lot due to my Autism on a daily basis and a game like this was absolutely the right call for a 'playful' way of bringing some motivation into people's lives. That aside the game is absolutely a great game to play for an hour or so here and there and enjoy it a lot. So all in all I would absolutely recommend playing Nebula Within as you will definitely enjoy the experience.
Addendum
After a few interactions with the developer and requesting a way to make the game easier to play with my inability to see well regarding most shades of green/yellow which was making me lose sight of my ship and reticule in 'grellow' backgrounds (and normal gameplay) they immediately got to work on it and added features to help with this. The developer's passion, enthusiasm and support for making the game playable for as many people as possible had to be commended in a seperate addendum to my review! Nebula Within is a game all about tackling negative feelings and depression... in the form of a twin-stick shooter. That's new for sure, coupling calm, soothing music with the stress of being attacked from every angle! Pros : - Unique identity - your ship's and your enemy's movements are easy to read - Ships is very responsive - Is actually wholesome - Doesn't get on your nerve after 10 mn of playing thanks to the calm ambience - Has really unique, cool and interesting boss fights (probably the best part of the game) Cons : - Some power-ups are a bit underwhelming - It seems like the rounds are RNG-ed, so you can have bad luck and end up completely surrounded - the game really wants to be immersive, to the point where you're not sure what the menus means and sometimes feels like you don't know the rules of the game (I finally found some explanations on what seems to be the Bonus menu) - I hated the hard mode (which seems to unlock if you manage to beat 2 stages successively). It is forced on you, your screen turns to a bright white, making your eyes tear up, and also making your ships and the enemy less visible. -The small companions that join you after each round is completed will leave you after only one hit, they are really useful so it's a shame we can't keep them a bit longer! Overall these cons aren't as important as the pros, so if you like twin stick and atmospheric games, go for it!
Originally $9.99 game that went Free. The messages can be summarized as: try to believe in the opposite of negative impressions. The gameplay and calm music didn't really mix which led to my boredom.
Wonderful game that captures your attention in many way. The music pulls you into the environment and the game itself is challenging and engaging. There is a large amount of heart in this game that is uncommon and rarely seen today. You're encouraged to keep going, take care of yourself and enjoy this thing called life. For a game to do that is certainly rare, and that's what makes this game a treasure. Fun to play as a dual stick shooter or on mouse and keyboard as well.
<-- Review written for 3 Point Play -->
If dictionaries somehow started including a game for specific words, the one under the word "Niche" would probably be this. Imagine if two friends were to gather, and talk about games: One of them really liked, uhhh, I don't know, Cyberpunk 2077 or something like that, and the other one has quite trascended the need for popular AAA games, has gone way beyond the concept of videogames, he, somehow, has become more than human, and instead of talking about the latest AAA flop, he instead suggests they discuss the twin-stick shooter dealing with mental health Nebula Within. I mean, this is quite specific, isn't it? Many people have done games dealing with mental health, and many others have made twin stick shooters, and you have a lot of variations in both of those... genres? But our friend Nick Ouejian here has fused both of those, and made this game in which you get the best of both worlds. Featuring a simplistic, yet somehow symbolic presentation, the game uses a really particular gameplay loop: You drive your little ship (or whatever that little thing might be) across different stages, each one dealing with an specific state of mind or ailment, and try to defeat all the enemies. Every time the phase changes, you unlock a new manthra to reflect upon. Once you complete a certain amount of levels without dying, you go blind, because you made the mistake to play this in the dark, misguided over the fact that the screenshots in the store page are almost all pretty dark-ish, only to get burned by the milk-white background that will take over the screen. Seriously dude, that wasn't cool. It features many of the already tried-and-true staples of the twin stick shooter genre: Score counter, buffs pickups, lives, enemies with set patterns, cool music, and couples that with the promise of a satisfying journey to our own mind. Truth be told, it is quite an experimental game; it isn't for everyone, as it might easily fall under the concept of "games that are not necessarily fun", as this is, in fact, not its main objective. It also has a co-op mode in which you and up to 7 of your friends can play through the stages together. But then again, I don't really have like 7 friends that can read english easily, nor do I have enough USB ports on my CPU to plug in 7 joysticks; also, the "not for everyone" rule applies once again, as this is not recommended for neurotypical people. Seriously, though, can be set off the EMP that shuts down all the chips on neurotypical people? I'm tired of them. Recommended if you're interested in this really niche passion project developed by a 1-man team, and if you're into experimental games; I reckon it could also be a blast under the effect of certain psychotropics, but then again, I'm not the one to either endorse, recommend nor actually partake in that sort of activities.

A simple twin stick shooter, some permanent upgrades as you complete each chapters would be nice to feel stronger but gameplay is good, has simple but sometimes needed messages to remember in life :) If you'd like to see what we're playing next with regular updates, or request to review a game, feel free to follow us at: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35688508-Ember-Works-Reviews/
It's a wonderful game. I find it very nice for unwinding after a frustrating day of work or classes. One can get their fill of the game in about a 15 minute game session, though it's definitely a little longer than that, and feel refreshed and ready to reengage in the day's activities, enthusiastically. The mental health portion of the game deals with negative thoughts that one might have on a particularly frustrating day. I find collecting the Mantras calming, almost serene, even with swarms of enemies closing in in waves. Even players that aren't dealing with mental struggles during work or school will enjoy this twin-stick shooter style, geometry wars influenced game. I just find it particularly helpful as one who does get frustrated often and who turns to video games to unwind and relax. Even if you have all the Mantras and aren't searching for more good feels, there is an endless mode, with infinite lives and infinite enemies, where one can blast baddies to their heart's content. On the other hand, if the reminder of good feeling is what you need, there is a journal where one can review all the Mantras they have collected thus far, even flip to the specific Mantra they are looking for, to feel better about a specific situation they were put in or encountered. The co-op mode is particularly a fun and interesting challenge, where one can have their friends join them on the journey through the darkness of their own mind. Each additional player will play a smaller ship almost just like the ones that follow you while collecting Mantras. If the lead player should die during this cooperative adventure, the next player in line will take control of the group, becoming "promoted" into the bigger lead ship until their own death. All allies who aren't controlling the group can also sync their button clicks and break off from the main ship, helping alleviate some pressure with temporarily improved guns. The controls are simple and easy on either controller or keyboard-mouse, though I find it feels more natural with controller. Overall I'd give the game a 5/5 for it's genre. What's more impressive is that a single developer made such a gem.
Nebula Within is just the type of game I've been looking for to come to after a long, stressful day, just to unwind. The gameplay is simple enough to hop right into and play, yet just challenging enough to keep me engaged. The movement and shooting mechanics feel really snappy, clean, and responsive. The enemies are diverse and easy to differentiate and learn the patterns. Unlike many twin-stick shooters and bullet-hell style games which suffer from screen clutter / noise, this game keeps the screen clean-enough to tell exactly what's going on at any given moment. The messages behind every level are incredibly well-thought-out and meaningful, providing fantastic positive affirmations at every turn, from chapter messages to fill out the diary, to the little helpers you receive along the way, to having to destroy the negative words of some special enemies, it's all a breath of fresh air. This, with the inclusion of an endless mode, not having to worry about dying, and mindlessly annihilating enemies to a soundtrack that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, helps me unwind flawlessly every time I boot the game up. Tack these positive points onto a beautiful and unique visual and audio style, it's hard to imagine this game was genuinely developed by just one person — but it was, and that in itself is jaw-dropping. The developer seemed to know his strengths and weaknesses as an individual developer, leaned heavily into his strengths, and stayed away from any weaknesses he may have. With so many AAA titles being released that are unfinished, broken, and often hard to look at (let-alone play), Nebula Within really shines through showing what one dedicated, passionate individual can create. If you, too, use video games as a primary source of entertainment, and need something new and refreshing to hop into — something that you can play at any time of day, from just waking up to kickstart your day positively, until just before bed to let your mind wander as you keep your hands and eyes busy — I'd highly recommend picking up Nebula Within. Even while receiving the game for free, I've already purchased it as a gift for a few friends. It is 100% worth the $10 price, and you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not buying this game, so long as twin-stick shooter interest you even in the slightest.
