Or were you deaf or were you blind when you left your two fine legs behind, Or was it sailing on the sea when you got the cannonball to your knee, I too was young and I was slim and I had a leg for every limb, But now I’ve got no legs at all, they were both shot away by a cannonball.

About

Admiral John Byng who spent his life sailing the seas for the British Navy, died in 1757, by bullets on the deck of HMS Monarch. Admiral Horatio Nelson, carrying on with the utmost duty, fell similarly to a French musket shot in 1805.
Now it is YOUR turn to sail the seas of the Age of Sail.
But it would be wise to approach the subject cautiously: practice, improve your skill and your ship and connections with allies. Then you can commandeer best vessels: crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear lamentations of their women in global chat.
.......................................................................................................................................................
Naval Action is a hardcore, realistic, and beautifully detailed naval combat game immersing players into the experience of the most beautiful period of naval history - when sailing ships ruled the seas.
Age of sail combat is a personal affair with no dirty tricks, corner camping, or hiding in bushes: you see the enemy from 20km and so do they. Just like in boxing you have to get close; and use all your tactical knowledge of wind, your ship to slug it out face to face. Broadside weight matters, but even a smaller vessel can overcome the superior enemy by focusing on the enemy weak spots.
No game has come closer to the replication of the Age of Sail sailing mechanics and combat. Thats why Naval action was named one best releases from early access in 2019 by Valve!
Beautiful ships – We have been painstakingly recreating the beautiful ships of the Age of sail period. Accurate hull models, sail plans, guns, internal upgrades, historical speed trials were used in the creation of vessels. The game features 50+ ships from small cutters to large 100+ gun 1st rates allowing the player to experience every possible role of that era.

Realistic sailing – Advanced wind and physics model provides for realistic portrayal of ship’s performance in the age of sail. Yard angles, ship angle to wind, fittings and ship condition affects speeds and turning rates. Correct tacking, boxhauling, clubhauling and other elements of realistic sailing will help you win battles in most adverse conditions.
Conquest and PVP Activities Fight for the domination of the West Indies, recreated based on 18th Century maps and navigational charts. Build ships, trade, attack enemies of your nation almost everywhere and capture their ships and Open trading outposts in the ports governed by your clan.
Damage model – Every cannonball is tracked in the air and after it hits the target. Leaks, structural damage, torn sails, demasting, raking, fires, explosions and all other hazards that were possible in that era. Damage is positional: hit the gun and you might destroy it. Gunnery crews are placed deck by deck. Shot can pass through the balcony, ricochet of the gun, hit a crew member and then fly out of the gunport splashing into the water. Armor thickness and wood types affect strength of the hull and cannonballs will ricochet from the hulls at extreme angles.
Built for PVP: Absolutely no hackers.
Hacking is a killer of fun in PVP games. From the start we have built the tech around one main goal - complete elimination of hacking from PVP. Naval Action is one of the few games where hacking is made impossible by design. Every battle action is calculated on the servers, even water and wave shapes. Yes - you have heard it right: there is a special server that calculates and replicates waves to all users in battle. When fighting in Naval action you can be sure you are only facing skills and ship fittings.
Gunnery and weapons – Major types of naval artillery are implemented: from long guns to mortars to carronades and obusiers. Fort and land batteries will provide you with support during battles near shores. Mortar vessels can destroy fortifications, though they may require an escort.

Each gun has realistic ballistics and penetration performance based on historical gun charts and admiralty tests. Heel and wind affect the shooting distance and will require a change in tactics.

I have collected 5500 hours of gameplay since 2017, but truth to be told last 4 years I am just ocasionaly checking game if DEVS got to their senses. Game in its current state is just too much grind just so that you can earn enough money to even afford going into the battle. Even worse, you can grind/trade for days and do bunch of non-combat related stuff so that you will be able to fully equip your DLC Redoubtable just to then be ganked and all your progres to be lost in minutes.
As a Pre-Steam player (Pre-2016) it is sad to see the state of the game and how far it has fallen from its former glory. Dev please listen to your player base for once!

The game used to be great, the new owners have taken cold take after cold take. I would not recommend this game at this time, if the devs amend issues, make it more accessible and bring back things like free ammo it will probably make the game more playable for single players or small groups of friends. Pros - great sailing mechanics - Firing broadsides feels incredible - Huge open world - Plenty of missions/things to keep you occupied Cons - Steep learning curve - Devs ignore the fanbase and long time players - Devs have made the game worse over the last year and since the original owners sold it to a new company - Hard to get started Great for clan game play, not great for individual players or casual game play
i have loved this game, i have hated this game , but wow, what a game. i have played this games for years , on and off, and its changed so much over the years. i have many fond memories of naval action, iv played in many nations, in many clans , and run my own clans, been in all aspects of the game, from the biggest port battles too the pvp hunting parties, to straight up piracy and commerce, even playing the games internal player based markets and crafting. this game used to be full of life, full of fun endless conflict of nations , its had many dramatic turn arounds in terms of nations positions , and clans conflict. however now , sadly , this is mostly gone the game used to have a solid player base, as well as a continuous stream of new players joining the game, you were never short of finding someone to go and give a tickle , however now , im afraid that is a much more difficult thing to achieve simply due to the fact there are now only the most loyal players left remaining playing. these loyal players that do remain however , after having many discussions , are genuinely quite one with the game also, not due to the lack of love for the game, but the developers actions , which have over the coarse of a few years , steadily made playing the game unreasonable to achieve what you want to achieve in any reasonable timescale. the developers have done the absolute bare minimum to get new players into this game, i myself have personally tried, with many videos of various YouTube videos , and inviting anyone who wanted to join me and the clan a solid invitation , regardless of new or old to the game. newer players get stuck and cant recover, the developers change the way combat works entirely every 6 months, then maybe after 4 cycles of changes it reverts back to how it was, these changes often make things you've spend a long time creating e.g. ships obsolete overnight , or having to re learn things yet again on what works now. instead of adding options to increase the variety of gameplay , its just cut and change , every time. many players including myself usually like one of the cycles , which you then have to wait maybe 2 years and its in your favour again XD. this game is a absolute time sink , now dont get me wrong, i love progression and honestly i love the combat of the smaller ships in the game (5th and 4th rates) however now , with the recent changes , your going to be spending hours and hours and hours and hours and hours , to make even a 4th rate , you need to generate the money for it , (takes a long time) you then need to gather the resources ( takes a very long time ) and then finally get all the gunpower, cannons, cannonballs and so on , which takes even more time , and by the end of it , if youve spend a full time jobs worth of time on it then youll get a ship ..... however that simply isnt do able for 90% of people ... including myself. now there is the dlc options , yes , i have most of these, as simply put , i didn't have the time to mess around all day , i have a child, ( will be a second in about 3 weeks ) , a full time job , and other things to do. now yes the dlcs suit me , i dont want or need the bests boats , however now all of a sudden , these dlcs have become so valuable i would genuinely call it pay to win, given you can just plop a boat out once every 24 hours. ohhh , my first rate sank , ill spit out another , oh , that sank , whats this , i have a second rate i can plop out , oooo , that sank , ill get another one ...... do you see the issue ? . you will never beat a player economy wise , if you dont have the dlcs, sure, you can work around it to a degree... however the time needed to acheive that is simply not worth it ..... its very sad for me to day , and people have been saying tis for many many years, however i honestly truly believe now , that it is time to say goodbye to it, with a playerbase of around 150 players online at peak time, who have mostly all have had enough , half of these will also be alternate accounts, for economy reasons . i have honeslty , never remembered a game like this, iv got many fond momories, but that is all this game can be now , a game that was so good, could have been even better, but fell so hard , and only on life support from the loyal players who have loved it just like me, but simply stuck as there is nothing quite like it out there as the game is now , i would NOT recommend spending your hard earned cash on this game, you will need more to buy some of the essential dlcs o7 naval action its been a good one
The game is now owned and run by a man who deliberately makes changes to make the game less enjoyable. In the year since I returned to the game, I have seen promises broken, with regard to the return of certain game features (bringing back clan treasuries and warehouses specifically). I have also seen the owner - in the game's official Discord server - tell players to write GOOD reviews, and then he will CONSIDER returning the clan warehouses and treasuries. He seems to be trying to blackmail players into making a game that he is slowly destroying "look appealing" to new players.
MOSTLY NEGATIVE REVIEWS ARE THERE FOR A REASON SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY...You CANT buy into a good ship here UNLESS YOU GRIND FOR WEEKS. Horrible game that players that have been staying on game swear is really good...spent a full day grinding just to lose about 80k because the game doesn't explain that you need 1st LT in order to EVEN START CRAFTING even then there's no farm to make sure you always have supplies. when you decide you wanna move your base or you accidentally placed your base somewhere there's a NICEEE CHEAP 25k fee to get rid of your buildings that you have to pay when you literally got the POS for free.. you have to go kill ships and even in 3v1 with ai controlled ships, the ships are way more than retarded and either flee or run into each other the whole fight, i had a 3v1 against a ship that was a BR of 15 and i was a BR of 34 with ALL OF MY SHIPS 8 GUNS ON EACH against a sloop with about 10 guns total and the two other ships that were ai controlled that i brought to help ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ flee'd...all together i've lost 4 or 5 free ships and even the 3v1 didn't work and AI was useless and cost me about 3 days and 130k from all the ships i lost ....this is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ waste of a game and time when you cant even learn to shot in a short amount of time to really make the game fun if you're trying to find an old naval shooter just go to The Pirate Caribbean Hunt...its money hackable and easy to play and basically has the same game just little worse graphics and WAYY easier aim if i could give this POS 5 negative stars i 100% would
The following is in regards to 2026 patches of the game, specifically on the main (Caribbean/PvP) server. TLDR: STEER CLEAR. This developer does not deserve your money and if you just bought the game or a DLC, get a refund before its too late. Pros: - Combat on the whole is actually pretty good. If you can find or organize a fair fight, you will have fun. - Pretty much all resources, including rare guns, rare ships, etc. can technically be obtained without spending additional money on the game. - There have been several, small quality of life improvements made to the game in recent months. At the end of a battle, you can now use the map to loot dead ships and you can capture DLC ships from other players so far as you have that particular DLC. Cons: - Grind is absurd for the amount of time you get to spend actually PLAYING the game. Ships sink pretty easily in the current implementation of the game. It not simply possible, but likely that if you take your shiny new ship out to do anything whatsoever, you will lose it. Losing ships is normal, but when you have to spend 8+ hours just grinding the money and resources to obtain a ship that will likely only last one or two battles? (Which is 60 minutes in open world, 1hr 45minutes in a port battle.) Not worth the time investment, especially for active RvR players. - Last April, the "Rules of Engagement" were completely overhauled and are far worse than the previous system. You can now be repeatedly griefed in your ship of the line by a player in a cutter. Even worse, entire fleets of first rates can be stopped in their path towards a port by the same cutter. Previously, there were BR tagging limits which would prevent this type of griefing. - When a battle is initiated, anyone can join the battle irrespective of how many ships are on each side. This results in very uneven fights in open world, removing skill expression as one third rate can only do so much against 5+ enemy 3rd rates. Ganking is now the name of the game in open world and fair fights are a thing of the past. - Many major features which existed in the past have now been removed. For example, you used to be able to invest in your ports by building iron mines, tree farms, sugar farms, workshops, etc. These would produce resources passively, reducing the amount of time you would need to spend sailing stuff around in open world. I purchased a DLC which gave me more building slots in my ports which would allow me to build more of these passive income buildings. However, as of 2025 these buildings were removed and this aspect of the DLC (Which was $40 when I bought it) is now useless. - DLC prices are absurd. $55 for a single ship in this game which I have to spend disproportionate amount of time equipping to be able to use while I can go buy Baldur's Gate 3 for $60 and have significantly more fun. - When I obtained this game, it was free to play. Now, new players have to pay $20 in order to play, spend $40 on a DLC in order to play on the PvE server, and spend who knows how much more in order to actually participate in daily PvP or RvR. - The developer is constantly at odds with the community. Long time players have repeatedly expressed their concerns, banded together to brainstorm and present ideas, and usually presented them to the dev in a respectful manner only to be ignored or even insulted in return. In fact, the dev has even gone so far as to ask for polls on various mechanics only to implement the exact opposite of what the community voted for. I put time into this game when it was still playable, participating in PvE, PvP, crafting and RvR. There was once fun to be had in building your fleet, sailing with your friends and owning ports on the map. Now however, the problems brought to the game have completely gotten in the way of the core aspects of the game which once made it fun. I fear that until this game gets proper direct competition, nothing will change and as such I wholly advise against purchasing or returning to this game. Its not worth your time and sanity.
Unplayable, this game right now is just impossible to play, at first you can be starting with your ship and that same moment get tagged by 9 ships bigger than you in the most toxic way possible, the developer does not mind about this happening as this people keep spending money in the game. As the game stays the same, bad decision after bad decision, they just keep loosing playerbase day by day by their poor mods and as its really hard to have fun in this game, thank god i got this game when it was free and not by paying 16 bucks that are 100% not worthy. If this does not change course this game is probably going to die thanks to the dev and its mods, really hope it changes as rn i would no recommend buying or going back to this game
DO NOT SPEND MONEY ON THIS GAME! The developer constantly changes their mind on what they do or don't want, and to add insult to injury they seem more concerned with removing anything that helps people work together or makes the arbitrary grind less painful. It will take you HUNDREDS of hours to get anywhere near close enough to actually participate in the big battles, Back when this game was free to play, I could justify overlooking the hostile design as a way to encourage the use of smaller ships and not have the game be 1st rates everywhere. But at the same time, the AI is buffed to hell so any equal fight will sink your ship. Also, unlike other resource constrained games where groups of players could combine efforts to gather resources, this game does not currently allow almost any form of co-operation without extremely awkward work arounds. Don't get me wrong (check my hours played even), I would really like this game to succeed and be the awesome Age of Sail MMO it could have been. But the developers need to open their eyes to the fact that either solo players need to be able to do everything by themselves easily or clans and groups need the tools to efficiently coordinate for the benefit of all. At the time of this review, there is not even a clan warehouse for shared storage at the same port.
