About

Being a student of mystical arts is hard work, doubly so if you are Belle MacFae - a freshman student at Hagmore School of Magic. The teachers and the staff are mean, her friends are few, and her grades suck. Worst of all – Belle has a tendency to be at exactly the wrong place at exactly the wrongest time. Like tonight, for example, when she stayed up late to practice her fire magic, but instead got framed for upsetting an ancient ritual. And what better way is there to punish an unlucky first-year student, than to charge her with an impossible task on the worst night of the year? Re-create the Walpurgisnacht Brew, or be expelled, and with all manner of spooks taking over the school, expulsion is starting to sound better by the minute.
Inspired by games like Slightly Magic, Puff in Dragonland, and the Dizzy series, Mystik Belle is a hybrid of a classic point-and-click adventure and a modern metroidvania.

You may experience all of the following while playing this game:
Get hopelessly lost in the massive school building and its surrounding areas.
Find items and solve inventory puzzles. Or just clog up your pockets with useless junk.
Interact with other inhabitants of Hagmore. Learn clues, help them out, ruin their day with angry flies.
Fight through hallways infested by over 60 unique monster types.
Defeat 8 bosses.
Learn new magical and not-so-magical abilities.
Ogle at retina-burningly colorful pixel art.
Punch Cthulhu in the face.

PLEASE be advised: Mystik Belle is NOT just a metroidvania - it's a true adventure game. You will not get far without having to solve inventory puzzles or talking to people.
By default, the game contains some language not suitable for younger kids. A much more kid-friendly E-10 version of the dialogue is included, and can be selected from the options menu.
OSx version of the game doesn't support the Steam features like the overlay, achievements and trading cards. I will look for a way to get this sorted out as soon as I can. You can still get the game's internal achievements which will transfer to your Steam achievements once this is fixed.
I am temporarily unable to update the Mac version of the game due to changes to OSX and introduction of mandatory developer fees. I will resume Mac updates once I have the money to pay Apple their ransom.
Native Linux version of the game appears to only reliably support the Xbox 360 controller. This is a known issue of all GameMaker Studio games.

FIRST IMPRESIONS (post completion edit already bellow this): It is a VERY competent metroidvania with a female protagonist done right (theres even a bit of humor which reveals why this was possible). The pixel art is on point, the maps are interesting and distinctt, They avoid being pointlessly over bloated like some other examples of the genre (cough cough, Chasm cough cough). The mobility is simple and to the point, it has neither the problems of older games nor the complications of the psycho "everything has to be a souls like" kind of game developer. it ADS to the backtracking aspect of metroidvanias by introducing a puzzle/graphic adventure mechanic to collectibles -the story and the characters are not lifeless, they are endearing, and fun in a cartoonish way. Overall, this game is neither for an adult nor for a child, it is a game for a father to enjoy some (classy) back sit gaming behind his child. --- END OF FIRST REVIEW---- POST COMPLETION: -Two things first: 1-SEE ALWAS AWAKENING (and the other Alwa game)? THIS is how you make an endearing metroidvania about a magic slinging girl 2-i want to say that i forgot to write about the music, this game has ok music, but i handles it perfectly. Too many are the metroidvanias with just one nausiating theme all through the game these days. -Tha said, once again, my eye is a 100% correct, the intended audience IS groups of adults and children. I know this because: 1- things that are beyond children: A- the difficulty spike of the spider boss (i had to touch the keyboard, but it felt great to be able to go "i got you".... still died like 5 times) B-some of the item relationships C- attention span and will power to get the true ending D- the eye to understand how to win the last battle 2- Teens (specially boys) wont be retained by the story, graphics, gameplay, moving on to some other games VERY quick 3- Adults will play it out of nostalgia for the kind of game it plays homage yo, and the simplicity of the game makes it a good time waster piece of escapism from day to day toil 4- I've played games which are full of humor to the point they annoy, this one keeps it in the pocket. Some of the humor is for kids, some is for adults (even some enemies' names)- The only thing i see here just for teenagers is the speed running achievement ....... we're not doing that
El combate es horroroso, por el resto esta guay
this is like every mediocre GBA platformer (if it's even appropriate to call it that) that you saw on the shelf but never bought
One of the most beautiful pixel graphics I have ever seen in a game. You can feel the dedication that has been put into this game.
spider boss too hard this is why i dont buy games anymore cant finish rest of a game ive paid for
This is a yes, but only to people who like classic Sierra/Monkey Island style item puzzles AND likes Metroidvanias. If you're not fond of obscure item puzzles and hitting certain dialogue triggers you're not going to have a good time. Visually it looks nice, the sprites are large and animated nicely. There's a good amount of enemy variety and terrain is very detailed, especially outside the school. Sound's fine and music is good if repetitive. Platforming is solid but you are very floaty and move a bit slow until you get a few abilities toward mid-game. Combat is decent, and I do like that even though there's contact damage from enemies to you, you do contact damage back. This damage can sometimes add up and be a very useful thing when you can collect enough healing hearts. That said, some bosses are difficult to tell what hits you and what doesn't, and that leads to a lot of unnecessary damage. Bosses are also very tanky and your thumb will get sore spamming attack on them. There's levels, and your attack strengthens (and at certain thresholds changes) and health increases on each level. If you die, you lose all XP progress toward the next level, so be sure to get your level before tackling a boss. You cap out at level 8 so it's not too punishing if you die a few times. Some progression paths are difficult to figure out, they require a lot of items found and certain story dialogues triggered before you can proceed. There's two endings, a standard ending and one with a true final boss (with an alternate combat form) if you collect all the lore items. Both endings can be obtained on the same save if you trigger the ending without the lore items, then go get the last lore and do the rest. The true final boss is a frustrating mess and soured me quite a bit on it. It feels really janky to do, and it's very difficult to see what your hitbox is. Overall the game is short, it's in the mini-Metroidvania category like Witch & the 66 Mushrooms or Tiny Dangerous Dungeons. It took me 5 hours to 100% the game on a first playthrough (just missing the speedrun achievement which would need another run). This is with getting stuck getting the right triggers and items together for a late game bit of progression. Finally, if you're a Linux or SteamDeck player, the native version wouldn't run, and I couldn't get it to run properly no matter what Steam runtime I tried. I had to switch to the Windows version and use Proton to play it, which worked fine. Overall, yes with caveats, and you must like both traditional adventure games and combat heavy Metroidvanias to pick it up.
puzzles are stupid and hard to solve without the help of google. thats sad, could have been a nice game.
