Mystic Midway: Rest in Pieces

Brings back memories of the old Phillips CDi and this is a great time waster which actually plays better on PC because of the mouse controls. Be aware that the trailer footage is taken from the CDi and this MS Dos version is considerably more pixelated as you'd probably expect. Glad to see Pixel Games UK releasing some of these old school retro gems at a decent price. #ItsShowtime

Played this game as a small child on Phillip's CD-i and was elated to see it was on steam. It's simple, direct, and highly replayable. The sound clips are fun, the music is cacophonous, it's everything I remembered.

I recommend this game only on the rare instances it goes on sale. I paid $1.99, which I believe is fair for what amounts to a time-waster from 1994. I played this game on my next-door neighbor's Philips CD-i back then, and at the time it seemed like the most cutting edge thing I had ever seen. We still only had SNES at that point, so a game that featured full-motion video, digitized music, and such bright, vivid graphics seemed insane. Then the world realized the CD-i wasn't capable of much else (similar to those weird games that occasionally were on DVDs when they first came out), and we all went back to our ACTUAL video game systems. This is the MS-DOS version, supported by DOSBox, so it's not even an emulation of the super-shiny CD-i game, which also makes the steep price of $4.99 (at the time of this writing) seem utterly ridiculous. It's not a game that you'll play for hours (maybe cumulatively, over the course of a year or so), but it does the job for when you're waiting for food to cook or another game to download. It retains the dark humor of the original, with quirky sound effects, a spooky carnival atmosphere, and of course your host, Dr. Dearth, who seems like a character straight out of Beetlejuice. Each round requires you to amass a certain point total to move on to the next one. If you don't, Dr. Dearth mocks you and you're forced to start over. It does record local scores though, which is kind of nice for someone who grew up when scores actually meant something. Overall it's a very, VERY conditional recommendation. I love collecting strange and unusual games like this, and it helps that it's from my childhood. But if shooting galleries aren't your thing, and you don't care for older games like this, then I'm sure you'll find it very boring and ask for a refund. But I think I'll keep Dr. Dearth around. He does make me laugh sometimes.

Might be one of the worst games I've ever spent money on but I keep coming back to it for some reason.

First of all I've played a lot more than 2 hours.. I owned Mystic Midway back when it was on the Phillips CD-I and honestly I can tell you that its one of the best shooting galleries there is.. between levels Doctor Derth taunts you and you'll find yourself coming back from time to time to challenge the Mystic Midway over again! Basically, it's a lot of fun!

It runs a bit slow at times, but otherwise I love it for the nostalgia.
