If you remember playing this game as a kid then the nostalgia alone makes it worth the purchase. Even if you have never played before it is still a great game 20 years later with surprisingly decent graphics and a lot to do and unlock! Tons of fun for just an arcade style MX/Racing game!

The game is great. I never owned a PS2, and probably never will, so being able to play games from that era on my PC is wonderful. The soundtrack bangs and is a reminder of what the 2000's had that any other time afterwards will never have again. The amount of rock, metal and rap in this soundtrack sets the tone for what you're about to dive into and the menu theme will get stuck in your head. Game runs on literally anything, you could probably port this to a smart fridge and it'll run perfectly fine. The track editor is intuitive and quick to learn, and I was able to make my own track in roughly an hour. Most of the vehicles handle a lot better than what the newer MX vs ATV titles have. There is a ton of content to unlock and mess around with. You can either cheese your way through the game via cheat codes or progress at your own pace. It is also worth mentioning that the cheat codes are great for if your save data gets corrupted and you want to get most of your stuff back from another save. The progression is fun and engaging, and the Championships mode provides a great deal of intensity as it is complete with week by week schedules and points standings. Winning races or at the very least finishing second will award you with 1 to 2 items that you haven't unlocked yet, which will save you some store points. Obviously because of how old this game is there aren't any microtransactions which is very relieving if you've played any of the newer titles. The tracks always provide some kind of challenge, and while they are easy to learn they are very hard to master and can be extremely punishing if you're inexperienced or try too hard. There's a lot of stunts that can be performed and each one awards you with score, and however much score you obtain in an event, half of it will be converted to store points, which is what makes progressing through the game very crucial. This doesn't apply to user tracks though, so keep that in mind. There are a plethora of tricks and stunts that can be performed throughout gameplay, and repeat stunts will provide lower score outputs to encourage variety, and while that sounds unfair it is balanced perfectly. Repeat stunts, while not as rewarding, can still be quite sustainable regardless if you chain together stunts or not, but you won't see as much score as you would if you were to perform different stunts. The general aesthetic of the game is very much a throwback to the mid 2000's, with the main menus and UI giving off a rugged vibe that is reminiscent of Burnout 3: Takedown and select EA Sports games during the time. It is simple yet aggressive and I am all for it. Finally, the game is feature rich. There are many settings to play around with when it comes to setting up races as well as vehicle combinations and customization. Profile creation, viewing statistics, customizing your rider and/or vehicle, exploring tracks regardless if they support Freeride or not, general setup of the game, and so much more. MX vs ATV Unleashed is a retro title from an amazing era of gaming that has stood the test of time and it greatly deserves a remaster for newer hardware and to bring original players back to the franchise, and new players into it. Now we move onto the negatives. Because of how old this game is, it suffers from a lot of issues especially on newer hardware. There are some bugs that range from either mildly annoying to entirely game breaking. Attempting to view Stunt Mappings in the control settings will crash the game for some reason. Completing a race on a user track has a chance of screwing up whatever profile you're playing on so make sure to duplicate your profile before giving user tracks a try. Audio presets do not save (at least when it comes to music) which results in some songs or sounds being either really loud or really quiet. From what I've read via other reviews, the game really hates when you try to play on anything that isn't an NVIDIA card. I don't have to worry about this, but there's for sure a lot of people who do. Aside from bugs, the track editor also lacks some basic features such as copy and pasting objects, or rotating the direction of the blue starting node that is present on every track. The default control layout for keyboard is not very enjoyable to use, and does not feel comfortable when using literally anything besides movement. I highly recommend changing the default keybinds to your liking before hopping into gameplay. Because this is nothing more than a port of the game, it is locked to a 4:3 aspect ratio and capped at 30 FPS with a severe lack of graphics and visual settings. While the 4:3 aspect ratio can be bypassed through the NVIDIA Control Panel, the 30 FPS cap cannot. I don't mind either of these, but I'd love to be able to make the game look a lot more prettier via settings. This game also doesn't have much attention on PC. If you were a gamer back during the 2000's you would know that this game was and is an absolute hit, but as of recently it seems to be almost entirely forgotten. Because of this, the PC port has only had a 33 player peak (as of writing this review) and it doesn't seem like it'll be higher anytime soon. Multiplayer also does not work anymore as GameSpy, the server provider for the game, no longer exists. The only way to play multiplayer on this game now is via patching it which is only a minor inconvenience. Doesn't even matter anyway because nobody plays this game anymore, at least on PC, but hopefully someone can get this game to be alive again. Moving on from the technical bits of the game, a couple of the vehicles handle horribly by today's standards. Yes, the bikes, ATVs, trophy trucks, and monster trucks are great, but the planes, golf cart, and helicopter are really funky and have learning curves so steep or handling so poor and uncomfortable that it isn't even worth playing with them unless you're aiming for 100% completion. I do however appreciate the inclusion of these vehicles as they are very whimsical and give the player the opportunity to use them if they want a break from the typical MX and/or four-wheelers. You don't see these absurd vehicle types in newer titles anymore, so try your best to enjoy them if you can get past the awful handling and drivability. The AI opponents are also insanely aggressive at times, and are completely okay with committing second degree murder every now and then. However, they mostly work perfectly fine and can even provide a bit of a challenge to the player and create some exciting battles. Just try not to hit any of them and you should be able to survive their antics. The menu music, while catchy, does get repetitive after a while, and you can't use any of the songs from the jukebox to replace it. With all of that being said, if you want to avoid the negatives, play this game on a PS2 if you have one, maybe try emulation, or just bite the bullet and deal with whatever problems come your way. Every experience of this game is different so you'll either have a fun time or you'll end up ruining your day. Either way, give MX vs ATV Unleashed a try. It's a game from an older time and I recommend playing it whether it be for nostalgia or expanding your horizons. TL;DR: Game is still one of the best in the franchise. Be wary of bugs either caused from age or hardware. You can run this on ANYTHING. Lots of features. No multiplayer unless you patch it. Graphics and display settings are relatively limited. Please for the love of God change your default keybinds if you play this with a keyboard. Back up your files, and duplicate your profiles before playing on any user tracks (or just go in raw. I don't care what you do.) Have fun kicking up dirt and getting covered in mud if you get this, and try your best to ignore or resolve any issues that may present themselves. Also, have a nice day, and try some other MX vs ATV titles like Reflex and Untamed as both of those games have aged like fine wine.

This game is pure nostalgia for me! The music, the tracks, the gameplay.....just a fantastic game....getting a controller to work can be a bit tricky but its worth the effort!
