About
Mutant Football League 2 is the outrageous, over-the-top spiritual successor to the ‘90s Sega Genesis cult-classic hit Mutant League Football.
This is not your parents’ football game or a bloated simulation that chases realism at the expense of fun. MFL 2 is a brutal, darkly comedic 8-on-8 arcade-style action-packed football game. Teams of Mutated Super-Humans, Monstrous Orcs, Skeletal Deadheads, and Armored BruiserBots are pit against each other in fantastical arenas packed with deadly traps and sinister hazards like buzzsaws and giant mutant worms. This “anti-Madden” blends the pick-up-and-play accessibility of arcade sports games with strategic depth and a buttload of monstrous mayhem. Referees don’t just blow calls — they get blown up. Players don’t just fumble — they explode into limbs and pink mist.
Create. Mutate. Dominate.
In Mutant Football League 2, you’ll create your dream team of mutant freaks and customize your team’s player composition and tactics. The right team is your ticket to gridiron glory, and you’ll have to define their playing style. Will you deploy a relentless offensive by mutilating the opposition? Or will you slice through the enemy’s defense with razor-sharp, brainy maneuvers? It’s up to you to show the world your prowess and become a true MFL legend. Under your guidance, these mutants will rise from scrubs to legends, crushing the competition with style and savagery across Mutant Football League 2’s single-player Season, Dynasty Supreme franchise mode, and online multiplayer.
Brace yourself for exploding body parts, comically horrific deaths, and blood splatters that paint the field red. Whether getting blitzed by a rampaging monster or succumbing to a trap-laden end zone, every game is a symphony of unpredictable chaos. Dirty Trick plays even allow teams to commit bannable atrocities; those poor refs… Nothing and no one is safe.
Choose from over 36 MFL teams composed of maniacal mutant versions of pro football superstars — 32 pro-league teams like the Karcass City Creeps, Killadelphia Evils, and Blitzburgh Steelheads, and 4 minor league teams like the Orcs of Hazards and Tokyo Terminators. MFL player cards also unlock historic players who can be signed in Free Agency; So, if you’d prefer to be a special snowflake, you can create an original team and craft a legacy of your own.
Evolve your mutant baddies to unlock new armor sets, mutations, and weapons such as chainsaws, shotguns, and more. Hell, you can even use SkillRoid Boosts to give your players special abilities during a game. We ain’t natty out here.
Become the ringleader of the freakshow in MFL2’s franchise mode. Start at the bottom of the league and claw to the top, turning pro by beating the competition across several seasons and winning Mayhem Bowls. Draft rookies every season and train them up to build a powerful roster.
Design your team's arena, strategically placing lethal hazards and manipulating the weather — buzz saws to trim the competition, fire geysers to turn up the heat, or drop a blizzard on those fools. Make your stadium into the kind of place where only your team loves to play, and everyone else just prays to survive.
Tim Kitzrow, the iconic voice of your favorite sports franchises — NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, and MLB Slugfest — commentates MFL 2, reciting plays and talking all kinds of smack. BOOMSHAKALAKA!

Certainly not a game to take seriously, but as fun as the first one. Now, they need to remake Mutant Hockey League!!!

The graphics are a little dated and not the greatest, but the gameplay is leaps and bounds ahead of previous titles in the series (including Mutant League Football on the Genesis). Dynasty mode is back with a vengeance. The game plays like a dream. If you're missing the old days of games like Blitz on the 64, this will probably, more than likely, scratch your itches.
this is a remake of the first game with a new roster, team creation, and a few minor additions. Still fun, but when you can get the first game for 3.99, I'd stick with that. Not what I expected
After playing the first one almost religiously for years, I feel like this game needed more time in the oven before coming out of early access. The soundtrack, while having a few returning "team themes", lacked a lot of the soundtrack I liked coming from the previous title, and while I didn't expect songs like "Coming After You" or "It's After Midnight" to return, I expected something with the same energy. This isn't really a dealbreaker for me or probably anyone else due to great music streaming apps like Spotify. Gameplay wise, it is pretty much about the same for me, albeit I like the new dirty tricks they added despite not seeing them too often. I don't quite like how sometimes a 4th string halfback will suddenly refuse to go down and take zero damage despite the people tackling and hitting him have way better stats. Dynasty: When it isn't bugged, this will be a vast improvement over the previous dynasty mode. I love having the draft as an extra way to get talent faster and escape the "your entire team is 40 overall and if you don't play perfectly you're going to get creamed" trap sooner. However, stat tracking for players as of the time I'm writing this review is bugged, making getting goals for some players impossible. I believe it is limited to players who weren't originally on the team but I could be wrong. I love that you can make your own team, however I wish instead of having to remove a team we could somehow add our team to the league alongside the other 32, maybe even adding one of the minor leagues back to it like the Full Metal Mayhem in the other conference to even it up. Presentation: This is, without a doubt, my biggest knock on the game. Compared to the first one, everything feels toned down. The menus are ok but feel more generic, like they could have been put in any game for some of it. Some things from the old menu are kept which I like but overall it feels plain compared to the menu we got from MFL. The announcers for the most part have a lot of the same voicelines and the players' quips are still on par I'd say. The scorebug is ok, I still like the old one better but the new one has a more modern and sleek look to it. Though the first down, fumble, pass dropped, and any other notification of that sort lost all personality. Going from stopping a 4th down and seeing "stopped cold" as it actually froze in the little monitor that dropped from the scorebug was amazing, and then in mfl 2 it got replaced by... plain text. The only thing I will say this game did better was the gore, I like seeing the damage on players as an indicator instead of trying to guess who to target. I can appreciate the new intro with the mutants getting hyped and them walking onto the field, although I wish there were different types of entrances, like some could come in with fireworks or smoke or even rain. The sacrifice of everything else for me was not worth the 12 seconds of intro given in replacement. Wildcard: As I'm not really sure where to put this I do have some other "complaints" about this game. For starters, I was severely disappointed that werewolves and demons were removed from the game. Whether there's an in universe reason for this remains to be seen, however I'm guessing they were replaced in favor of the variants of humans. Despite these variants humans are still in my eyes the most basic of all the races you can choose from, they just removed some of their competition. I also noticed that the free agent pool doesn't seem as deep as it was from MFL 1, whether thats because I need their cards or what I'm not sure, a way to know what cards you DON'T have would be nice or any way to mark progress with the cards could work. To people considering buying the game, for now, I'd stick with the original. However this one has the potential to be leagues better than its predecessor given time. I'm hopeful for the future of this game. To the developers, you are *this* close to making this game so much better than the last one. I have high hopes.
The premise of the game is incredible! A more arcade-y version of Madden with mutant creatures and carnage with a dynasty mode where you can take any team and build them up to a championship contender was the main reason I kept coming back to this game. The problem, though, comes with the balancing of the difficulty. Play on normal, you lose one or two games while you trade for some quality players and then there's no team that can stop you. The games become too easy and you either win by 30 or the other team forfeits because they've lost too many players in a position. Increase the difficulty and the computer becomes impossible to tackle, often needing 3+ defenders to take them down, the computer can intercept with near perfection (even the rushers can intercept as the ball leaves the QB's hand!), and idol players wandering off into hazards, dying after the play is over for no reason. I can get over most of these issues, playing the game out fighting tooth and nail, but when a game is lost because the RB3 runs up the middle, breaking tackles from several defenders with 70+ tackle, I realize the outcome of each game is only 20% skill and 80% luck. I really wanted this game to be good, but in its current state, I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone.
I loved MFL 1, ..but 2, They have done horrible tuning .It's not fun anymore..The AI reeads button inputs rather then actually reacting. It overr -buffes itself and actively cheats,...And I had no issues on normal in the previous game, ..Why the heck did they decide it was a good idea to tune an -arcade style- gamee like the first, into...whateever this is for the super hardcore sweats. They Overbuff, THey Over-rubberbadn, Theey -input read so they know -exactly who your passing too- unlike the original which had to react to the balls movement, ...THey focused all the tuning on the 5% top sweaty players who knew how to exploit the AI. The gamee is not fun to play, ..Maybe do "AI management mode" simulator and let it be AI VS AI because hten it can't input read and cheat like hell against you. And instead it's cheating against it's own cheating self. LEt alone the handoff glitches, and ...how much blatant cheating...It's not fun.
First I must say, I am a huge fan of Mutant League Football and Mutant Football League. Over all the gameplay and presentation is much better in MFL2 than MFL1. I loved the added customization to the players making them feel more unique than just a player portrait. You can now create your own team which is a really great added feature, but its not fully fleshed out. You can not choose from a greater and lesser pool of dirty tricks and are stuck with a middle of the field set of powers when creating your own team. You can also only choose from a handful of fields, maybe 8 in total? You can not edit your teams logo beyond picked your jersey colors. You do not get any fancy text like default teams and can not change the font (lame). The game is also full of game breaking bugs that have not been addressed. I can not longer view my player stats and standings without the game crashing, seriously wtf? The only way to fix this is to completely delete my team and start over, yeah I am not doing that after working so hard to level them up. Over all MFL2 feels like a rushed release. All the new shiny and welcome features are not fully fleshed out and some serious game breaking bugs keep you from really enjoying what MFL2 is trying to be. I guess we wont get these features fully fleshed out until MFL3. 6/10.
Fairly fun but the programmers don't know how to balance the game at all. You can be up 21 points and the way they "balance" it is the other team can break 8 tackles in a single play and just run into the endzone, then recover an onside and run it all the way back. Clown show. I can handle dirty tricks but not sub par programming balance. Also practically unlimited turbo on other team's defense, somehow they know exactly when you are calling a dirty trick and can negate it, and pass interference calls at random but the computer never gets called on it. Fun game, but man they pooped the bed in many aspects and hope they clean it up. Edit: Right after writing this I downed a running back and he got back up and ran it all the way in 60 yards. This thing has bugs EVERYWHERE!
Mutant Football League 2 Is Just Flat Out Fun

The Mutant League Reputation of Drawing Both Non-Sports and Sports fans is Fully Deserved
MFL2 lets you play exactly how you want to and doesn't require any knowledge of American Football to get started. The game also has hundreds of easter eggs for even the biggest football fans tucked away to get a chuckle from even the most hardcore of the sports fans. The two games on the Genesis are among the consoles most sought after and cherished games for a reason, they're more than sports titles and MFL and MFL2 do a great job to carry on that lineage. The Killadelphia Evils won't come out onto the field for the second half kickoff if you're winning and killing by enough and they also have an Eagle QB player for two small examples of the developers slipping little easter eggs. The development team has huge strengths in their creativity and ability to adapt the game to who's playing it. The presentation is excellent and there's a ton of long lost arcade tricks to level the playing field in favour of or against the player depending on what's happening. They also have a proven track record of releasing a product and REALLY supporting it long term. The previous game was a failed kickstarter that was built and released anyway, just stripped from the initial vision. Then they spent years adding in new teams, races, features and of course bug fixes. I've been playing the game since it's official release and have seem fix a ton of bugs with regular patches, even hot fixes when required. I'm writing this review because the games fun and I posted a few thoughts had and included the source of a pretty long term nasty bug at the end, that bug got fixed within 2 days of that post. The teams great, the games great and it doesn't matter how much you know about football you'll have a good time with the title.
The Good
* The overall presentation is excellent with a ton of character and detail in the players themselves. * You can play football or you just kill the other guys, it's about fun and how you want to play. * The gameplay works really well and there's a lot of old-school arcade tricks being used to keep it fun. * Really strong theming encourages you to build a custom team entirely around a specific theme. I've made passing only teams, heavy punishes rushing teams, an all troll team that was slow but hit hard and most recently a team that doesn't play offense at all. Everything I wanted to do I could and all of them were fun experience. * Includes an excellent custom team creator that allows you place a TON of hazards on your homefield. You can make as devious as you want or you can play into your teams name and theme. * Want to make your team nothing but robots who take half damage from mines and fire and cover field with those traps? Absolutely allowed and completely unfair to your opponents too. * You can enjoy it without having any knowledge of football and have fun straight away, even as a complete arcade game novice just looking for something to cool to play fun. * There's also depth in the difficulty and gameplay settings that can meet even the most hardcore min/max efficiency player. * Dynasty lets you get really into the weeds if you want to customize your team and players ability's, plays and even the traps your stadium has. * Dynasty mode has some rough edges but does a good job of increasing the difficulty as your team improves and wins titles. * Season mode works really well and plays into MFL2's strengths really well if you want a more pickup and play gameplay mode. * The developers have a track record of supporting their games long term and they've already fixed a lot of bugs. * The card system is entirely just drops you get from playing games and lets you build a pretty cool collection over time. * Pricing is very fair for the amount of content included at launch and there's no micro transactions at all, including the card system.
The Bad
* The amount that player stats and ability's get adjusted by the game goes beyond arcade style rubber banding and ventures into frustrating territory. * Dynasty progression starts to fall apart multiple seasons in and takes away some of the fun. * Card system would be better used as a purely a collection system and way to get skillroids for players instead of how it currently works where having lots of cards makes the game easier for players with lots of time invested. * The way the draft and CPU teams work in Dynasty needs a lot more attention. Currently all the draft classes are exactly the same players with different names who just get better ratings with each new season. * The development has some very clear strengths but their weakness shows up with a game that would have right at home in the arcade taking as many quarters as Mortal Kombat and NFL Blitz or NBA Jam but doesn't translate well to the deep franchise modes of modern sports titles. * The CPU goes above and beyond with it's cheating and that can frustrating to deal with. You can deal with it by being able to read pre-play certain formations and being careful with your play calling but it takes away from the enjoyment when you're forced to play a certain way. * Being able to pick and choose which dirty tricks and field hazards are allowed and being able to disable the ones you dislike would go a long way. The Bribe the Ref trick and worms that kill your players every kickoff are noteworthy frustrating points for me. * You will encounter bugs that are rarely game breaking. The vast majority of the bugs are small and mess up stats or opposition team rosters. The development has hot fixed bugs introduced in patches that have caused major issues or lockups.
Who Should or Should Not Buy MFL2
* There's a really fun experience here and if you're looking for something with that arcade feel that made NFL Blitz, NBA Jam and honestly both Genesis Mutant League titles so beloved you'll have a blast. * Players who have an idea to theme your custom team around for dynasty then you're on the same page as the developers and be rewarded the more heavily you lean into those ideas. * Players expecting a really in depth Dynasty mode like other sports titles are going to be disappointed with the way the draft, trading and free agency works.
Conclusion
The bottom line is your choice to purchase of a game like this is also your voice. I don't post reviews for games normally but I wanted to share both the good and bad things about MFL2 so people can make their own decision on the game. The developers at Digital Dreams Entertainment track record of ongoing support for their previous games plus the creativity and respect for the players they've shown made MFL2 an automatic buy for me. Mutant Football League 2 is really fun and rewards creativity with plenty of depth for all players. Welcoming for those with no American Football knowledge to those will know exactly why the New Goreleans Zombies have the hardest hitting player in the game.
This game shouldn't have been released in such an unpolished state. $30 for a buggy game that looks worse and plays worse than its predecessor. The game is fun, until the many issues that plague it drag it down. I wouldn't have minded waiting longer for this to come out provided it was fully polished/completed. The handoff glitch where the QB refuses to hand the ball off properly to my running back is absolutely infuriating, and torpedos my enjoyment of this game. It's costed me more games than count on all my digits. Like, it literally punishes me for trying to be a power running team with an aggressive defense. Speaking on defense, it's a joke in this game too. At least if you're a human going up against the CPU. The CPU REFUSES to get tackled no matter how high my tackle rating is. Even no named backup running backs with 0 IQ seem to effortlessly steamroll my 80+ tackle rating defenders. Sacks are impossible vs the CPU unless you use a dirty trick, as there's ALWAYS someone open on every play. Speed matters until it doesn't. The rubberbanding basically makes speed a stat that works for the human player for the first half, but not the second half. The CPU in general seem psychic in that that seem to know everything you're going to do. They perfectly guess or call plays that counter your dirty tricks, and in the second half, they PERFECTLY adapt to whatever you were doing the previous half. The glitch where they pick you off and the screen keeps flipping still happens. The lag that happens right before you get a kill. CPU Blitzers catching the ball better than your WRs. The list goes on... As far as team building goes, you should be able to pick what creatures your team consists of (i.e.. all skeletons or a mix of robots and trolls), you should be able to choose what dirty tricks you start with and disable buying them during the season. Also, where are the werewolves, demons, and aliens? Why are they STILL not in the game? ALSO, in the first game, leveling and developing your players was much easier, due in part by the CPUs in that game being more reasonable, and also due to the order in which things are leveled/unlocked. For example, as a blitzer in the first game, it was much easier to improve d-linemen because hitting power was one of the first things you got to upgrade. This made getting kills earlier easier. Overall, just so many things wrong for a game that costs $30. It wants to be fun, but its flaws make it very hard to want to keep playing...
