Inventive mechanics & delightful soundtrack. Balanced so that it only takes modest skill to reach a proper ending, but with plenty of challenges to pursue. My main complaint is the somewhat abrasive sound effects, but I got used to them.
Usually when I play a shmup I either beat it once, go "Yeah that was cool I guess" and move on to something else, or, more likely, I don't find myself interested enough to put in the work to beat it while cursing myself for not being strong enough (Darius Gaiden whispers at me every time I put the soundtrack on, which is very often). I cleared Murasaki's main 5 stages with both characters and I'm still playing it, working on the hard mode stages and extra stage after going out of the way to do some of the challenges with the incentive of... actually wanting to see the lore and story bits that come with them because I'm genuinely interested. Something about this game really clicked with my brain. Adding a puzzle aspect and a focus on bullet eating was already good enough, though I have to admit that the game being especially kind with levels being separately selectable instead of the game being the usual one continuous run definitely helped ease me into things. Add on that you have a health bar that'll allow you to run into a few bullets here and there and be fine, though the game is not at all afraid to still bombard you with fast streams of bullets that WILL evaporate you if you aren't respectful enough. The way that a certain stage starts out is frankly hilarious. So what am I gonna do if, or once, I beat the extra content? Move right on to another game, as usual. The sequel. I don't even need to talk about the music, just look at it for 5 seconds and you already what you're about to be hit with, and you already know you're gonna like it.
Murasaki has one of the more creative core gameplay loops of any shmup on steam. The main idea here is to shoot the shapes and get them to collide with the same coloured shapes. This will result in a chain reaction occuring that will wipe out any enemies in the area, as well as cancelling out their bullets. The more shapes collide, the bigger the reaction. The art style and soundtrack are both amazing here and help to set an unforgettable atmosphere. My only real gripe is that some levels contain cheap beginners traps (the start of the second level is definitely the biggest offender). Overall, I highly recommend this game to shmup fans.
The music alone makes this worth playing. Get the OST, you won't regret it.
It's alright.
