About
"BitSummit 2024 Sponsor Award PlayStation®PRIZE, INNOVATIVE OUTLAW AWARD NOMINEE"
This is an adventure game where five protagonists—men and women who boarded the enigmatic talking elevator, "Mr. Elevator"—solve puzzles in a mysterious otherworld they are lost in, searching for what each of them seeks. Freely explore the unique world, drawn in the style of early Windows Paint software, and thoroughly enjoy the puzzles that appear before you.
I'm Mr. Elevator.
Are you looking for something?
If you're in trouble, I might be able to help.
It seems that five men and women have wandered in here.
Are you... looking for someone?

There are many doors lined up. Let's try knocking or hitting them.
Oh, the door opened.
Sometimes you may walk in the dark,
And in vast fields, you may encounter strange creatures or stone statues.
Does a broken smartphone have any use?
This looks good for turning screws.
Sometimes you might hold a book and think about how to use the items you found,
And you might listen to a walkie-talkie.
How is it? Do you think you'll find what you're looking for?
If you like, you can take your time to find what you're looking for.
I'll always be watching over you.

Mr. Elevator is an interesting puzzle game with bright colors and primitive hand-drawn art. It is an adventure that plays out in 6 segments, each beginning with a unique character taking a ride in an elevator. It is an “escape” exercise with some inventory and quite a few diverse exercises in translation (sounds to words, symbols to hand gestures, colors to music, one language to another, etc.). Each segment begins with a discussion between the character and the elevator in a voice that is automated and sterile… just what one might expect from a talking elevator. The door then opens to admit you into a unique landscape which must be navigated and solved. Each segment has multiple puzzles to work through. Tools at your disposal include a lighter, voice recorders, a walkie-talkie, a screwdriver, etc. Mr. Elevator was a tough game for me. Hints are available, via web pages that require Google translate to view in English. These provide both graduated assistance and the full solution for each enigma. While I solved much of the game without help, I admit that I used the hints more than I would have liked. With 20/20 hindsight, there is certain elegance to the puzzles. However, there are quite a few logic leaps required that were not intuitive for me at all. The game uses an interesting mechanic, with you controlling TWO hands that both have a long reach. Many of the exercises require using both hands and quite a few require you to coordinate their movements. It is not always clear how to accomplish your current task ( such as burning paper, clapping hands, snapping fingers, recording specific phrases, etc.). Some of my time was spent knowing a solution but having no idea what key strokes were required to implement it. There are no subtitles and headphones (or speakers) are required. There is a bit of spoken text, but all critical conversations can be repeated. So much of Mr. Elevator is based on sound that you would not be able to play without it. As a result, the absence of subtitles becomes moot. The game auto-saves several times within each segment but, if one is not careful, it is easy to find yourself repeating puzzles to return to an unsaved position. About half the achievements are hard to miss if you finish the game. The others are a mystery that can be solved after your first pass through. I really enjoyed Mr. Elevator and appreciated the creativity of the landscapes and the puzzles. I found it to be a difficult game which may mean that I am not as smart as I think I am or it may mean the developer was a bit obtuse. If you enjoy challenging adventures and don’t mind a good bit of ‘try this and try that,’ then I would highly recommend Mr. Elevator. I would also encourage you to stick with it after "finishing" with less than 100% completion. The last few puzzles are truly rewarding to solve and they are definitely worth the extra time it takes to uncover their secrets! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OmzBQ_MVmw
Decided to try this after seeing its soundtrack among Kirby composer Jun Ishikawa's ambient music (under the name Mushio Funazawa). The environments and (often sound-based) puzzles are varied and clever. It can be difficult to know what to do in places and I likely wouldn't have reached the end without the hint site referenced in the game (requiring browser-based translation). Enjoyably odd, overall, with more depth than you might expect based on the graphical style.
It's a fun game, but not enough care was taken in localizing to English.
There are many puzzles which are poorly translated (oddly enough, the translation puzzle falls into this category), which make perfect sense if you then check out the Japanese hint website, and only after consulting multiple translations. Even the made-up language for the aural translation puzzles are deeply rooted in Japanese linguistic conventions (essentially Japanese gibberish, which again, will either take some time or a background in Japanese, which I luckily have). Combined with the clunky speech-to-text narration, it's not all that immersive of a game. The fun comes from puzzles which rely strictly on pattern recognition, problem-solving, and intuition- not those which necessitate endlessly translated hints. So overall: a unique aesthetic and a fun game with a glaring caveat. I cannot recommend this to native English speakers.
Pretty good game, the vibes and puzzles are reminiscent of Madorica Real Estate. There are no subtitles yet and sound is really important so hopefully you can understand oral english (or japanese/chinese) and have no hearing issue or you may not be able to play properly.
