Good short Arcade style game! These devs are on a roll! First shotgun king and then this game? Dang, they sure have some creativity inside of them. Keep the games coming PUNKCAKE Delicieux! As for the game, its a roguelike psychedelic ring type breakout game. There's no "bricks" here, but enemies that follow you around and want to kill you. The screenshots don't convey it, but its actually pretty challenging! The physics are sharp and fast. Any wrong corner and boom life lost. Anyways if you'd like a breakout type roguelike game, this is the game for you! The play session feels like they're meant to be like they're previous game, Shotgun King, as short, powerful and intense sessions. Can't go wrong with that!
The controls are just downright atrocious, playing it on control seems like it would be the best choice at first because the circular nature of the control stick lines up with the circular game field, this is a foolish assumption, On controller it moves WAY too fast for the degree of precision needed to move the ball, and mouse is somehow just as bad, because the paddle is very much stuck to the circle and your mouse is definitely not stuck to the circle, so all but the best of players will eventually forget to keep the mouse on the circle, rendering the controls just as bad as controller, and even if the paddle was easier to operate its still a task to do it well because the playing field is innately bad for pong. Because the normal rectangular field of pong is curved into a circle the gravity is very wonky and, if you go far "Up" enough than the ball switches gravity and starts falling away from you instead of back to your paddle, which is unavoidable because the center of gravity is usually where the enemies are, so you are forced to make the horrible choice of not attacking and letting enemies pile up, or attacking and having the ball go veering off at top speed into the abyss of death
This game is literally moon + pong (except it is circular) Difficult, wacky, but fun and quick to pick up and play. Worth the price, and would recommend to people who like arcade and action rogue-likes. Soundtrack has a retro chiptune feel to it, and makes it feel even better. Has a good replay-ability, and the BEST story of all games I have played recently. Overall 7.5/10
Fun game, rage inducing if you are bad at it. I am bad at it. PUNKCAKE just seems to not be able to make bad games, and they're all cheap, needless to say it's worth the money spent.
Pinball meets Pong meets Isaacesque bullet hell. PUNKCAKE delivers again!
MOONPONG is a great Pong Roguelite. I'm glad to have found it, I bought it immediatly based on it's unique looks and the fact that it's Arcade gameplay really called out to me. It's charming, fun, although a little short. I wish it was longer. The music is great and fits with the theme, and the items are really good too. I really hope we're going to see more content in the game (apart from more items - I'd love to see more bosses and new enemies - basically a bigger game, but that's just my vision.) I really love this game!
Honestly, really good game. Though, as a suggestion to the devs, maybe add more paddles? I'd like to see one that freezes the moon every time you hit it, personally. But that's just me. For anyone that comes across this review and wants to know if they should buy the game: If you like roguelikes/roguelites with unique mechanics, then yes. You should buy it. And play it. Don't forget to play it.
A challenging arcade game that's great to replay thanks to its simple mechanics and excellent endless mode. The many accessibility options for the visuals/gameplay are also appreciated (including the equippable hats for the moon and cursor, those are essential).
really cool little indie! bit of a learning curve but worth checking out :-)
