Moon River is a short RPG adventure with an emphasis on music and atmosphere. Perhaps some secrets too... Explore the remains of an quiet, empty world & find the river's end.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.
About
You are someone called the Mariner, a sailor who's been out at sea for an incredibly long time. You are headed to Elapse Island, one of the last known places of the world. There, it is said the people only exist in the moonlight, as well as the river that runs through the island: "Moon River." For whatever reason, the Mariner desperately seeks something at the end of the river.
As the Mariner, your objective is to travel to the river's end before dawn. Deep shadows obstruct each area of the island, so you must find any sources of pure light to dispel them and proceed down the river.
Along the way you'll find new people to meet, sights & sounds to experience, and secrets to uncover.
Moon River forgoes combat and heavy narrative, instead primarily consisting of exploration and puzzle solving with optional secret events scattered throughout.
Occasionally, there are special interactive events and actions to perform, such as operating a machine. These events briefly break up the regular gameplay for a more varied experience.
Beneath the main story, there is a hidden history of events from the past which can only be uncovered within the world's secret spaces and unchecked corners. Only the highly dedicated can piece the entire story together.

Moon River is an atmospheric experience with very light narrative and gameplay elements. You'll explore different areas of Elapse Island, searching for ways to dispel dark shadows that block your path along the river. This is not intended to be thrilling or challenging, but rather to evoke emotions through the colors and sounds of this environment.

Got invested in the game right away! It was definitely a nice experience on all points.
Inject more abstract stories about the sun and moon straight into my veins!! I loved how the colors used for each zone showed the colors of a sunrise over time. Just a beautiful short game.
I am going to think about this story for a very long time. This should be on the list of classic RPG maker games.

Moon River has an excellent soundtrack and great retro-style pixel art reminiscent of the Gameboy Color era, Melancholic allegory drives the story. There is no combat or power progression - gameplay revolves entirely around exploration and dialogue. It took me slightly over 2 hours to beat which included some optional extra map exploring in order to hunt for hidden story cutscenes. It would have been nice to include Steam Achievements, but with a price tag of FREE I can't complain.
I've named a new world.
A charming adventure rpg with a unique story centered around life and death + hope and desperation. The game has you asking yourself many questions about the plot as you carry on with your pilgrimage. I can't believe it's free... this is the best hidden gem I discovered on steam in 2026 so far. Also, it plays well on the deck!
A charming, highly detailed, fully realized RPG that brings you through a straightforward—yet uniquely meaningful—journey. Beautiful graphics, shockingly wonderful soundtrack, and prescient characters with writing that stays with you long after completion. Despite being a relatively short experience (I spent around 4-5 hours completing one playthrough) it wraps up its story beautifully, as the ending feels fulfilling and the story arc makes a blind playthrough worthwhile. Despite being free, I would pay money for it. (Buy the Soundtrack to support the creator!) Play if you LOVED playing: OneShot, Yumme Nikki, Beloved Rapture, and Look Outside
This game really displays the charm of RPG-maker made games. The gameplay, while clunky, fits right in. The atmosphere and bgm fit the storytelling to a T. Some of the secrets were genuinely challenging to find, or easy to miss. I almost can't believe this game is free.
