Monstrous Lovers is a light-hearted BL visual novel. It features four different monsters to pursue a romantic relationship with, all while trying to juggle your job in a new town. Just when you think things are finally settling into a comfortable routine, big news hits the town, shaking things up once again. Characters: Christopher Wells is our MC who is bored with his current job position. He feels like he's not doing enough to actually help those who need it. He requests to be transferred to Saint George, the city with the highest population of monsters in the country. Despite his desire to do good, he's not exactly welcomed with open arms. Underfunded, understaffed and not exactly welcoming of humans, Christopher really struggles to even officially claim his job. Christopher isn't anything special. He's just a basic guy trying to live his life as a government employee. He wants to do good but it's an uphill battle because of his race, especially in his new town. Combine that with the fact that he is a bit of a perfectionist, likes to stick his nose in other peoples business, and can become pretty irritated over the smallest things, he's not really having a great time of things. Sebastian Griffin, the boss of the office, is a bit of a weird one. I feel like he was written to fill in the tsundere trope. There are times Chris thinks that perhaps Sebastian is doing something nice for him, but covering it up with insults. Having played through his route, I'm pretty confident that he's just an ass with some very serious temper problems. Even in his good route, there isn't much in the form of character development. Perhaps this is just Christopher always seeing the best in people? Despite Sebastian's position, his commitment to the job, and his skill at getting things done even with the minimal funding, he holds a pretty big secret that could rip everything away from him. Vincent is our beloved vampire, new housemate and co-worker. He's the biggest flirt: always trying his luck with Christopher even if Chris doesn't reciprocate. Very popular with both the men and the ladies. Vincent is pretty lazy when it comes to his job. He is always late for work and manages to disappear when something calls for his attention. Despite his laidback approach, when something catches his interest, he will give it his full attention. Vincent has a mysterious past that is threatening to catch up with him, and maybe even those he's holds near and dear to. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2543715283 Isaac is an android and our other co-worker. He's basically a human-sized walking Ken doll with ball joints. Or just a ball-joint doll I suppose... He wears nothing but a single, open, red coat. On any other person, I'm sure he'd be fired for public indecency, which would be a shame because he's homeless and lives at the office. Androids are pretty rare in this universe and because of that, Isaac is mistreated a lot: often being called "it" or "robot" by Sebastian and not trusted to take care of sensitive work himself. Being a machine of sorts, Isaac is very capable of mundane tasks and has an excellent memory but lacks emotional judgement. He's stoic and generally only speaks when he needs to. He hides a pretty big secret. Ben is the fourth and final romance option. He is, of course, the overly friendly werewolf and your neighbour. Ben and Vincent have been friends for quite some time so it's only natural that Christopher becomes a part of that friendship too. Our cuddly werewolf is the sole guardian of his six younger sisters. Needless to say, he has his hands full most of the time. That doesn't stop him from offering his help at every opportunity though. He is definitely one of those guys that are too nice for their own good. Everyone likes Ben, but you'd be hard-pressed to find people who would choose to hang out with the man. Because of Ben's large responsibility to his sisters and the fact that he is the only one that works, it wouldn't be remiss to find that he's done some questionable things to make ends meet. Scene structure: Reacuring issue where scenes are set up, details feel like they might become important, but are never brought up again. There's no conclusion to what happened, leaving the whole thing to feel irrelevant. There are also a lot of scenes that have missed potential. In one route, Chris wants to use his first paycheck from his new job to buy his friends a little gift each. We see him go shopping and buy something for them but that's it. There is no follow-on scene or even any hint that he gave the gifts to them all. This could have been such a sweet opportunity to bond with the LI but was sadly skipped. Because of such a jarring structure, when the scene jumps from one to the next, I wasn't aware of how much time had passed between them. A day? A week? It isn't always made clear. I felt like there was just too much guesswork to follow the timeline correctly. Background music: The music selection for this title is very well chosen. It's hip and funky for the fun scenes but more mellow for the serious stuff. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2550789858 Voice acting: The store page describes this game as having "partial voice acting by industry professionals". Although the quality is very good and done in Spanish, it isn't partial in the more common sense. Where most VNs have lines voiced here and there through the game, or random words even, Monstrous Lovers has more, what I'd call, a fully-voiced introduction. It's exactly what it sounds like, the first section of the game is completely voice acted and then nothing after that. As I said, the quality is really good and it's not often you find Spanish actors, but that fact it suddenly stops after a certain point leaves the game feeling a little hollow from there onward: as if something is missing. Romance: The romance, although not that heavily focused on, is generally really sweet most of the time. It's wholesome and brought a smile to my face on a multitude of occasions. Adult content: The 18+ content is very light. There is no CG and any steamy description leading up to the scene varies in length greatly. In one route there was just a brief mention that they had sex after kissing. If you are hoping for something a little more enjoyable, I'm afraid you might be disappointed here. I didn't feel like the scenes really added much to the overall story either. Tight routes: It's extremely hard to get any sort of ending that isn't the bad one without the use of a guide. I played through the game several times while mixing my answers and always found the same ending. I was half expecting Man-Eater Games to follow suit after a different yaoi company and release a paid guide. I was very thankful when they released an official one for free. Minor text errors: There are a fair few typos and grammatical errors throughout. Nothing that will cause an issue with understanding the story, however. An additional proofread and some touching up would polish this novel to near perfection in that regard. Overall: I feel like Monstrous Lovers could have been so much more if only a little more time and thought was put into it. It wasn't terrible by any means, but with all the little issues, it wasn't great either. Perhaps I was hoping for more than the novel was able to give but I have been left feeling a little disappointed. I don't wanna be critical because I can only imagine how hard it is to make a visual novel, but the wait for this was totally not worth it. Originally this was supposed to be released sometime back in 2016 if I recall but the creators would frequently go radio silent. By now I had completely lost interest in the game and the concept (but I was an indiegogo backer thus couldn't get a refund) Considering the amount of years they had been silent, there were so many bugs within the game which really should have been smoothed out before release. And the promised voice acting? Only added briefly for the beginning and they gave the impression that the whole game would contain voice acting. Overall the wait for this game was very anticlimactic with a somewhat mediocre story and makes me not want to ever consider backing up game development ever again
I really don't want to be critical, because I know how hard it can be for indie companies to put out content. That, and I really wish I could recommend this game...but as it is now? It's just a no. It's okay, cute even. But was it enough to make me say I "loved it?" and that it was "worth buying?"...not really. To start: I did like it, and like I said...it's cute. And if you're the type of person (like myself) that eventually wants to try all of the LGBTQ+ games out there good or bad quality? Go ahead, get it full priced or wait for a sale. That's up to you (but I do recommend waiting for a sale because the game does currently have a lot of issues). Now about the story: Was the story good? Wellll...? Yes and NO. I liked the story and where it could have gone. It didn't really flow that well tho. It felt pretty rushed, had ambiguous endings, and if you're there for the romance & sex, both felt pretty lacking. It's really up to perspective tho, but I personally felt the romance was rushed, and so were the sex scenes to me. Like, there just wasn't enough build up to it for my personal tastes if that makes sense. Now about the characters: You have 4 ROs and I played them in this order: Sebastian, Issac, Vincent, and unfortunately I have yet to finish Ben's route due to the current game code errors, but I'm sure he's okay. I didn't realize of course until I played them, but Sebastian and Issac have a bit of plot spoilers. So if you want to avoid them first: You could start with Vincent, and then play Ben's if he also doesn't have any plot spoilers once his route is fixed. But as of now? I currently don't know. So when I do, I'll try to re-edit this and add that. The characters are cute and lovable. But they did have somewhat unfinished endings for me, and more questions rather than resolve. Personally, that's a 50/50 for me. If you're going to leave me with more questions about the romance and leave it it open where you wonder "where does it go from here?" or "what happened to them after that?" "will they ever get back together?"...then it has to be well written for me to enjoy such ambiguity. However, in my opinion this game wasn't really well executed enough for me to find all of the good endings I played enjoyable. But they were cute at least, and hey KISS CGS all around so that's a cute plus. For sex scenes: There are NSFW 18+ scenes, one for each ROxMC pairing. NSFW positions: -Sebastian who
rides on top of the MC
-Issac who
gives the MC a handjob
-Vincent who
gives the MC a blowjob
-Ben who doesn't currently have a working route, so this will be left empty for now Now in order to see these scenes, you do have to download the DLC. Which also had a lot of downloading issues in the beginning on my PC or on my Steamdeck. Also to note: I ended up playing this on my Steamdeck since I felt like it was running well or better then on my PC. CURRENT GAMING ISSUES: -Light grammar errors: Sometimes they do throw you off, and it pulls you out of the game. An example is in a scene where the RO is talking about construction and renovations being done to the office he keeps saying renonations. -Error codes all throughout the game making some endings unplayable. There were too many times I had the error code screen pop up (especially with Ben's route) or where something glitched or crashed. This game probably should have been beta tested for longer than it already was...if it had been, before being released. -Scene transitions are sometimes confusing because it mixes up the time of day, and then I would be confused on if the MC was already on the next day or just doing something later in that day, which could have also led to the story feeling rushed. Just my perspective. Current Game-play hrs: Unfinished, due to gaming code errors. I'm also not always the type to play for bad endings, especially on really long routes where I already feel like the game is done. But I do like to play them on shorter games sometimes, so maybe I'll go back and try for some of them to get full completion if the gaming code errors ever get fixed. But for now I consider this game done and completed at 11hrs. With Ben's good ending route? It probably would have been around 15hrs+ In the end, cute game. Not worth the 14.99 though in it's current state tho, so I don't recommend it at full price. Perhaps on sale and just be aware right now there's only 3 playable routes and that's it. Hope you find this review somewhat helpful, and just know what you're getting into. OH! And just to note there is no VA entirely throughout the game, and it's only in Spanish if that's something you wanted to know about if you're reading the reviews and it wasn't already apparent on the game page (it seems like a lot of people didn't realize it wouldn't be in both English and Spanish for VA either).
*Updated 2/24/2023* This is more of a neutral review rather than a strong recommendation. TLDR: Monstrous Lovers is a supernatural geared visual novel with four love interests. The game comprises of a variety of choices and a clear benchmark where the player will know which route they have entered. Each character has a good and bad ending, which you get is pretty clear despite not being explicitly stated as such. The characters are enjoyable to interact with as each have their own distinct traits and personality. Explicit content has been added through a free dlc patch and includes a cg to go with the scenario. In-Depth: Story: Each of the characters have their own story that truly fleshes itself out after the benchmark point. My personal favorite was Vincent and seemed to be a suggested "true" end route. Despite this the other characters were not neglected and are about the same in length. Every route was enjoyable and provided enough to keep me invested in the game rather than just skipping even in routes I wasn't as enthusiastic about. Art: The art in the game is clean, and enjoyable to look at. It's stylized to an extent but not to the point that it detracts from the story. Each character has an introductory CG and about 6 route CG's to unlock, 2 of which usually comprise of the good and bad ends. Based on my playtime of 13 hours, the average player would unlock one CG per half hour of gameplay. Voice-acting: The game has some spanish voice over in the beginning. The majority of the game however is silent as the voice ends by the time you enter a character route. The voiced lines that are there sound good, and don't detract from the story but based on how the voiced lines are spaced out it does feel a little voice heavy in the beginning compared to the silence in the character's routes. Music: The music is comprised of some royalty-free pieces that I was able to pick out. They don't necessarily detract from the scenes themselves but they also aren't that memorable either and is not the selling point for this game. (Especially when compared to the art and story line) Misc: [strike]I did encounter a gallery bug where a CG wasn't registering which the dev is aware of and it has patched. The dev is also quick to answer inquiries which is greatly appreciated. There are also no achievements for this game.[/strike] Gallery bug has been fixed and achievements have been added for completing character endings and the common route. The new adult patch provided an expansion on the 2-3 sentence explicit scenes that were present in the game prior. My favorite overall was Vincent's due to how naturally it flowed in comparison to the other characters. I wasn't as into the others due to them either feeling awkward as a scene or the lead-up didn't personally get me into the scene. I would have likely enjoyed the other characters scenes more had the characters appeared to have more attraction for one another rather than what appeared to just be a surge of lust in the moment. The game is overall a fun experience and does a good job engaging the player during each playthrough. If you like supernatural creatures, fluffy with a hint of spice romance, and/or an interesting read then give this game a shot.
Follow Far2close - Visual Novel Playthroughs Curator Page Monstrous Lovers Developer: Man-Eater Games Publisher: Man-Eater Games Pros: 1. The story presents itself as a down to earth, somewhat relative plot that we may have a grasp on in our daily lives. It pins it down to: monsters living peacefully just like humans, each with their own laws, protections, and programs to help them settle in. This is how our main character Christopher Wells comes into play, he moves to St. George to work at the DOI (Department of Integration) in order to help make a difference in the monster dominated city. The route I found the best for Christopher was Ben's, it fits in with how Chris is as person on how he wants to make a difference. Ben is up to his neck in taking care of his 6 sisters all by himself after the parents have passed, along with trying to balance fun with his busy family life, finding a stable job, with the worries of potentially losing his sisters if he doesn't try hard enough. Overall, most of the characters' routes do an excellent job in fitting with the theme of the story without being exagerrated. 2. Most of the characters are pretty memorable, Vincent is charming and lives under a shadow of his father he tries to overcome, Isaac is calculated and learns how to give himself his own place in this world, Ben is the hardest working family man, and Sebastion is strict on work with some hints of something underneath those bandages. These characters have great dynamics with each other, especially Ben, Isaac, and Vincent when all together to make some lighthearted moments. They have their wants in life and also their worries, which is one way to make them feel human even if they aren't considered one. 3. The art is pretty decent, it's of high quality and gives the characters a lot of life with varying facial expressions. There are also some segments that show cute little chibis and those add in a wholesome feeling to the scene. The CG art is great to look at, greatly adding to the experience when it comes to action oriented scenes or tense sensual moments. With the R18+ Adult Patch applied, it makes the spicy scenes great to look at if you want to have it on, even if the art style looks a bit different than the other CGs. Neutrals: 1. There is R18 Adult Patch, feel free in using it if you want, playing with or without it doesn't hurt the overall intended experience. Cons: 1. Sebastian's route feels like it could've been handled better, as it feels rushed and left some holes in his story that weren't properly addressed. His personality is very secretive too as he is mysterious but his story was written so fast paced that he wasn't able to grow as a character like the other love interests. It felt like a messy playful sexual relationship more than a romantic one, even with the few times it tried. 2. There is partial voice acting, mainly at the beginning of the game. It feels a little flat and didn't really stand out for most of the characters but Vincent. There were some moments that could have used a voice such as meeting Dracula, Renfield, or Maria. 3. There could have been more sprite variations for continuity sake, such as if the story says Vincent took off his shirt, there should be a shirtless sprite shown instead of his normally fully clothed one. Conclusion: Monstrous Lovers displays a practical story with great characters, even with some flaws that may stand out, it is an entertaining read nonetheless. Score: 7/10 GOOD
Monstrous Lovers is a queer visual novel with a pretty interesting setting and some charming writing and art - but it has some significant downsides too. 6/10 - enjoyable After several times trying and failing to get past the neutral-bad 'you didn't get the job' ending that tends to occur at the end of the intro if you don't follow a walkthrough of route choices, I was still interested enough to give up the illusion of player agency in order to read the story of each character. It certainly made things a lot smoother, though I was disappointed to encounter a handful of error messages from bugs in Ben's route that made it awkward to complete. I feel like checking out this story was time well spent for me - the writing is generally good, though it sometimes has minor grammar or typo issues that can jolt immersion a bit if you're used to proofreading things, and the focus on serving the needs of a diverse community (of monsters, but the allegory for real-world diverse communities is obvious) was a real positive point. I was fortunate to receive a Curator Connect copy for free. I don't think I can recommend this product as it stands at full price, as £12.79 is a lot to pay for a game with substantial bugs, odd audio design (full Spanish-only voice acting for the intro, but then nothing for the rest of the game) and minor copy editing problems, such as text going outside the bounds of its boxes on occasion. However, if the issues (bugs, typos, minor audio mismatches in the intro, small volume balance problems) were fixed, and some further development of the voiceover options were made (e.g. a more accurate description on the storepage, completing the Spanish voiceovers, and maybe adding an English option) I could imagine it being worth checking out at that price point. For the current experience, if it's at 50% discount or higher, and it appeals to you, then you'll probably find it worth trying. You can follow my Steam Curator page at Inclusive Games!
I try and play LGBT games and support the devs in the community. I really hate that I can't recommend this visual novel. I lost interest when I went through one of the paths, and at several points it displays an error so, you're missing parts of the story. Lucky you can ignore it and move on. Some times there is no image what so ever or it's just a checked background, with the wording. For £10+ I'd expect better quality. Surely this would have been flagged during the testing phase. You can get the free DLC (bonus) which I thought may fix the issue, but no. If I hadn't had this for so long (just not got around to playing it) I'd have requested a refund. The point of a visual novel is the visual aspect. I'd given up and lost interest in the end, and turned on the skip all, clicked ignore on the errors, and got the remaining achievements. The art work is good, when it displays, the idea of the story I like, and the start was good. The endings I really cannot comment on as I didn't get that far without auto skip. If you really want to give this ago, please wait until it's on sale, don't pay full price for it.
I really love the idea of this. And had fun playing until I got past the common route. And then I kept hitting bugs. Bugs that took me away from the route I was on into another route. A bug that took out the entire background. I reinstalled the game. Same problem. I am super bummed because the game looked like it was gonna be cute and then just hit me with all of that
Why is the voice speech in Spanish? and why can't I change it to english ?
