MonCon is a really great game!
I think that MonCon is a good game, it may not exactly be my kind of game, but I really do think there is a lot here for people to enjoy. MonCon plays pretty well. It is a mesh of a turn-based RPG and a rhythm game designed around the struggles of social interactions for those who are shy, autistic, or otherwise nervous around other people. It blends all of this very well; the RPG elements are solid, the rhythm-based gameplay feels good, the unique use of personality typing as a way to engage in conversations (combat) by creating a small typing system (like you would see in Pokémon, but at a way smaller scale) is well thought out, and the questing, inventory system, and mini-games are all good too. Though the gameplay feels good it does feel limited as well; leveling is basic, though the type system is neat the lack of many different types of personalities to interact with restricts the combat variety a bit, and it does feel like there is a right way to play rather than a ton of options. Also of note, the fact that the joystick on the controller doesn’t work only on the D-Pad is kind of annoying but completely workable. Nonetheless, I found the gameplay to be good, it is nothing astounding mind you, but it is fresh and fun and that deserves to be appreciated. Where the game doesn’t click for me is the story. I think it is good, but it is not a story that resonates with me. Convention culture is not my thing and the story motivation is not exactly something that I connect with either. Despite this, what I played of it I found to be well written and filled with a vibe that (I assume) would appeal to people who like conventions like Comic-Con, Anime Expo, FanX, or other specialized nerd/pop culture conventions. This is why my gameplay time is fairly low all things considered I just wasn’t motivated to get to the end, it wasn’t bad, I just was not very invested. However, if you are part of that space, I get a strong feeling that the story may really appeal to you. I also feel like the characters are pretty fun and well-thought-out. The game considers the personalities of people a lot and it shines quite a bit with the fun and thoughtfully crafted dialogue. Overall, not my thing, but I can clearly see that it is good. The sound design is I think the highlight of the game though. The menu, interaction, and all other sound effects are pretty good. But if you have read the description, looked at the screenshots, or looked at a gameplay video you will notice that the music is a strong focus in the experience. And I am happy to say that the music is well done. The exploration music is good, but the fact that combat is synced up to be connected to the beat adds a lot to the combat sequences and shows the care put into the music. I would describe the music as Jazzy (though not exclusively restricted to the genre of Jazz) it has that strong beat that allows for clear music syncing and it works well. It adds so much charm and impact to the combat. I don’t think that the music is my thing; nonetheless, I can appreciate good sound design when I see it and MonCon has it. Graphically it gives me a late 2000s Flash game kind of vibe and I like that; it seems fitting to the game’s vibe and is stylized very well even if I do find it a bit odd. Animations feel a bit sluggish, but not to the point where it is distracting. I also noticed that with my 1440p monitor when I enter full screen the game still says it is in 1080p. It looks pretty clean so maybe it is a glitch. If it is not a glitch though, lacking 1440p+ support is a fumble nowadays, 1440p and 4k are so common. I don’t think the game will appeal to everyone visually, but I truly do think that it has a charm to it that appeals to me at least. Though MonCon could not keep me in the long run that is no fault of the game, it was not really designed for a person like me, some stories are just for other people and that is okay. That being said it is clear that it has a unique story and world, with good gameplay, fun music, and a style that I appreciate, so giving it anything less than a recommendation would be unfair of me. So, if this seems like a story you would like, get this game, if not maybe give it a pass. As always it is I am very thankful that the developer gave me the opportunity to try out their game, it was a fun experience and I hope you get more interested players, I think your game deserves it.

This game is an interesting blend of two genres (RPGs and Guitar Hero-style rhythm games) and it works pretty well for the most part. I liked all the different monster designs that you see in battle. The graphics remind me of games from the 2010s and I liked the overall chill vibe that the game has. I especially appreciate the game's positive message about overcoming social anxiety. Definitely check out the demo if it sounds interesting to you.
HONEST REVIEW Overall, solid effort. Folks could enjoy this and have a good time. MUSIC: 8 / 10 This game demonstrates competence in musical composition and dynamic soundtracks. It reminds me of jazz improvisation, which supports the themes of conversational improvisation really well in a way that's strongly felt. SOFTWARE: 8 / 10 I did not encounter any bugs, and Steam Deck compatibility seems solid. NARRATIVE: 5 / 10 BUT YMMV A psychological thriller that made a gender transition into the slice-of-life genre. The calming effects of the music make it work, but only as long as the player is willing to enjoy the cringe. ART: 4 / 10 There are ways that the art is amplifying the cringe intentionally and unintentionally, so it's a mixed bag. An eye for perspective drawing would help - inconsistencies there are the most jarring thing for me. GAMEPLAY: 2 / 10 Points are mostly coming off for usability. I encountered small issues can that turn into big issues (such as signs that pointed me to the wrong floor, and I accidentally threw away my video game cartridge when trying to move it from the suitcase to the backpack since I thought "drop" meant I could pick it back up). For the core gameplay, as it stands, chopping up guitar hero tracks into small segments feels less fun than actually playing through the entire track. I appreciate the improvisational-sounding music, but don't feel like I'm really participating in it when there are no choices for me in executing it. END NOTE I was asked to write a review. I hope it helps everyone. And if you're looking for an excuse to play this game and cost isn't a barrier to you, I encourage you to just go ahead and enjoy.
I wish MonCon was real and I may have a crush on Joey
I haven't made it too far in yet but this game is pretty fun so far. I can relate to the main character being afraid of talking to people lol
MonCon - ★★★★☆ MonCon was a delightful surprise for me, offering a fresh take on the RPG genre with a rhythm-based battle mechanic and focus on the topic of social anxiety. The hand-drawn art style is vibrant and cozy, perfectly complementing the story's heartfelt tone. Exploring the world feels rewarding, with a variety of unique "monster personalities" to battle, several items to collect and trade, and a handful of fun minigames tucked away in the corners of the game world. The combat system strikes a solid balance between accessibility and depth, making it easy to pick up yet satisfying to master over time. The musical battle attacks, while catchy, can feel repetitive during longer play sessions, which is my main gripe. Additionally, a few technical hiccups (like occasional battle timing issues) popped up, but nothing game-breaking. The story about a boy overcoming his social anxiety is treated as lighthearted at the beginning of the game, but gets some surprising depth the further into the game you go. The convention world is populated with lots of weird, quirky characters, bolstered by some genuinely witty dialogue that had me chuckling more than once. Overall, MonCon is a gem that shines bright, despite its minor flaws. It's a love letter to fans of the "Mother-like" RPG genre, blending nostalgia with a new shot of originality. Highly recommend for anyone craving a cozy, monster-filled adventure!
A fun little RPG. Battles are very basic and can be a bit repetitive, the personality system also doesn't seem to be explained too well. Story is interesting so far. Price is a bit steep for all that's being offered though, so try and get it on sale if you can.
