Herd sheep, cows and other strange creatures while swatting away eldritch tentacles and plugging devilish holes, all for the love of hats and spices!
New year, new games and along comes a fantastic Early Access title that is at the same time alluring as it is mystical, and on top of that you get to play a handsome crow! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3398897643 In Mistified, the story begins with our hero getting their favourite spices stolen by an otherworldly darkness, all in all a fully relatable experience.. And so we are off on a quest into a mist laden landscape full of docile yet skittish critters ready to run off into the nearest danger should you get close. It is up to you to traverse the ethereal lands without letting any of the local wildlife suffer the consequences of your spice laden adventure. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3398896372 The core mechanic around this puzzle game is that each map consists of a bunch of hazards, a few critters ready to run off into said hazards, and a multitude of ways to prevent this from happening. To hamper your efforts you have a tackle-zone of sorts surrounding you that triggers the various animals in different directions and lengths depending on where you encounter them and what critter they are. To aid you in your run you have a limited number of tools per map and to utilize them correctly gives you a way to solve the puzzle, unlock the gates and proceed on your otherworldly grocery hunt. You can also freely rewind time to undo your more shameful experimentation that sent a cute bunny spiraling to their doom.. Mistified is a perfect example of a game that rewards you for being clever, and encourages you to find solutions to puzzles that at first glance might seem impossible! The zone of influence hovers around you as a sad reminder that you have no disney princess powers in real life either, and as you approach them all the animals scurry away oblivious to anything but getting away from you.. However, once you have moved the setpieces around and rewinded time a few times you start to see a pattern emerge and like a spell you figure it out. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3398894776 Now I like a good puzzle game and this is an excellent example of how to approach hard, yet solvable puzzles. Now I do admit that a few of the maps were overtly frustrating to a scatterbrain such as my own, and I felt like the lack of an in-game hint of sorts to help one get unstuck on a particular puzzle should be considered to those not gifted with extraordinary puzzly minds. A disclaimer, I did not finish the game due to it being in early access and thus a work in progress, but I did not encounter any bugs during my 10 hours of gametime. All in all Mistified is a fun and colorful little puzzle game that strikes way above its weight. It has some ingenious puzzles that evolve during your journey. I really liked the differently themed sets of puzzles where you get to use new mechanics to progress through the overworld, and the floating boat/island was rad! As a fellow crafty corvid, this gets extra points for kinship, but beside that this is a real gem that I can't wait to replay on release. Difficulty : 3.5/5 (Hard) Global : 3/5 (Very Good) My website : The Review Principle Curator page : Anokturnus Have you ever tried cooking without spices? Yeah not the best, and our crow protagonist just lost theirs, stolen by the dark claws. Needless to say that’s unacceptable, and thus the journey to exterminate the dark claws and get back your spices begins. Mistified is a grid-based puzzle game that mixes several genres, there are pure sokoban aspects – mainly the log pushing à la A Monster’s Expedition – as well as some Pâquerette Down the Bunburrows vibes. Your crow is equipped with a mist lantern that emits light around you, any animal in its radius will run in the opposite direction. Killing the dark claws by stepping on them and disabling their traps is one of the objectives of the puzzles, but saving the souls of the animals by guiding them towards the soul circle is just as important. The puzzles are varied though, so sometimes you may only need to kill the dark claws, sometimes you may only need to save a certain number of animals, it depends. In any case you must be careful: no animal must be caught by the dark claws. Mistified has an interesting non-linear world structure, the islands can be played in any order and their difficulty is indicated. Each island is then linear, the puzzles are unlocked one after the other until you reach your dear bottle of spices at the end. The puzzle design is very good, Mistified is a creative game that plays with and properly exploits a lot of things, this is especially remarkable when looking at the puzzle diversity. Yeah sometimes you’re like “oh wow another river puzzle ****”, but most of the time, the islands offer unique experiences and are not limited to one pattern like most puzzle games. The difficulty is pretty high once you’ve cleared the easiest islands. The animals and moving logs also emit light just like your crow, which can lead to tricky chain reactions. Some puzzles use them on purpose, but some other puzzles can actually be solved by taking advantage of these advanced and unintended interactions. So I often had the impression the puzzles didn’t have only one solution, there are just too many things going on and weird interactions for that. It’s one of those games in which you’ll struggle with tricky setups and adjust until it eventually works. It’s especially true for the river redirection puzzles, some special logs allow you to block a river stream or split it in two… but it’s actually very hard to anticipate things in this type of puzzle and there’s a lot of stuff you can do once again. Don’t worry though, there’s also a lot of more classic, small puzzles that only have one solution for sure, puzzles in which you need to find that little satisfying trick. It’s a very well crafted game puzzle-wise, inspired, varied and fun. But Mistified is far from perfect, and some pretty annoying things spoil the fun a little bit. The first obvious one is the absolutely abysmal performance, I don’t understand how a 2D game like that can reach as low as 20 fps when it’s supposed to be a constant 60 fps, wow! There are also a few bugs, mainly after you undo actions. Mistified doesn’t like it AT ALL when you undo too much, I had several game crashes because of that. In a game in which you need to undo a lot, that’s pretty silly. Using the undo button when you’re on the map is also risky, it can sometimes break the game. All these things are annoying, but didn’t necessarily bother me too much because they don’t directly impact the puzzles. There’s only one special case that absolutely needs to be fixed. When two rivers cross, one of them has priority and the other gets cut. If you block the river that cuts and then unblock it, it will become the river that gets cut. Completely logical… but if you then undo, it won’t revert back to the previous state. That’s a pretty precise thing, but a few puzzles actually play with these river crosses and, whether you want it or not, you’ll have to undo a lot. So you can’t really prevent this bug from happening. Some small quality of life features are missing as well. If you reset a puzzle after you’ve solved it, you need to solve it again. That’s a minor thing but I remember a river puzzle preventing me from going back. You also can’t undo after a restart, please come on! That’s absolutely mandatory nowadays, it’s SO useful. Contrary to Shrink Rooms which I recently reviewed, the problems in Mistified are actually not ruining the puzzles. Sure, they are annoying and some massive improvements would be appreciated, but Mistified is still a very good game with a clever design and fun puzzles. Just one last thing, there are hidden hats to find. And yeah, I only completed every puzzle and didn’t hunt for them, so I don’t know if these are purely just small exploration bonuses or harder extra puzzles. If I ever come back to this game to hunt for them, I’ll update my review.
Summary
Overall, the game is amazing. It's a really well thought out game with plenty of puzzles, from simple ones that give you direction to learning mechanics of the game to really difficult ones that pulls together everything you know about the game to completing it. The art direction they've taken makes the game feel cute and cozy but with a hint of mystery and uneasiness from the hands and roots that block your path. Personally I usually mute in game music in most games and play my own but in this one I really found myself enjoying the music and sounds, although truthfully this may also be because I was too engrossed into beating puzzles than to focus on the music itself. Pros

Audio/Visuals really bring out the theme of the game
Puzzles lead you into learning the game without text (We all skip the text so this is a great way to teaching by learning instead)

Navigating from island to island using a purple rabbit is a really smart way to keeping the core principle of the game and also providing a way to pick and choose what puzzles you want to do

The core mechanics themselves are very simple once you understand them
The developers themselves are very active fixing bugs that you encounter very quickly
Cons

It is still in Early Access so you will encounter bugs and such. A couple of the puzzles has broken the game to break but the messaging the Spicebound team in their Discord server of bugs they fixed them.

Personal notes
It's very clear that the game has been very well thought out and that the Studio had a very clear principle of what the game should be in their mind. They have stuck to that principle throughout the game from small details like the art direction for the hands looking ominous and evil to having puzzles within puzzles
e.g. the hats
. The game itself has no text and instead utilises symbols for everything making it extremely Accessible. Another thing to note is that the game allows you to learn everything yourself using your failures as experiences to completing the puzzle. As of writing this, I'm about 95% through the game with about 25 hours however I reckon most people would finish the game at 100% about 40 or so hours. Though by no means is that required to getting the "end".
I absolutely love puzzle games and this game is so much fun to play! I love the music, the chill vibes and graphics but it can get a bit hard to figure out some puzzles which is nice and challenging. Quite unique style and refreshing! I definitely recommend to try this game if you like puzzle games :) Also you can find a lot of hats in the game which is awesome~ 11/10
A very well designed puzzle game from a small studio. Love the art style, the bunnies are so cute! Accessibility with the step feature for rewinds is an excellent QOL piece, and the puzzles ranging from very simple to taking seven people in a Discord call to figure out, it's safe to say this is worth playing if you like being challenged.
“Mistified” is a beautifully crafted puzzle game that gently ramps up in difficulty as you progress. What starts off as deceptively simple quickly evolves into brain-teasing levels that can have you scratching your head for ages—only to return the next day and spot the solution hiding in plain sight. Whether you're a seasoned puzzle veteran or just dipping your toes into the genre, this game offers a satisfying challenge for all skill levels. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys the thrill of that "aha!" moment.
Gameplay: 9/10 Story: 6/10 Art : 8/10 Ambiance: 9/10 Difficulty: 10/10 FUN: 10/10 Great little puzzle game from a small indie dev team. Feels nice to play and the puzzles are engaging and difficult enough to keep me scratching my head. The atmosphere is whacky and whimsical and the art design and sound music make it compfortable to play. Couple of bugs but the devs are very responsive and it's still enjoyable regardless. I particularly like the design choice of going fully wordless. A refreshing take and a neat little puzzle game. TL:DR Is it fun? YES. Do some of the puzzle make me question my intelligence? ABSOLUTELY. If you're into puzzle games this is a good pick.
Mistified is a great, good looking puzzle game! The puzzles are very creative, and addictive as well. I enjoyed learning the new mechanics and then stubbornly trying to solve all the puzzles, including all the optional bits, which would give me a great sense of accomplishment and an "Aha!" feeling when I finally solved a difficult puzzle
🐇 A rabbit out of a hat 🔹 EXPECTATIONS: a simple sokoban game with cute art and a wide range of characters. 🔹 REALITY: a sokoban game that does a lot with very few elements. 🔶 In Mistified we embody a crow that has had his cooking spices stolen by a shadowy entity, which is also disturbing the peace among the local fauna. So we'll travel through interconnected puzzle levels, eradicating the evil instances while bringing animals to safety and retrieving our condiments. 🔸 The game's biggest achievement is how it manages to do so much with so few elements. I was expecting a wide range of animals, each found in a specific area and with unique behaviour/mechanics behind them, but by the end I was shocked there's only 5 (three types of rabbit, a bull and a walrus). 🔸 The magic lies in the intricacies of each element (alone or combined with others) and how the game pushes the player just the right amount to make them discover the solution to each puzzle without telling. There's a lot of content to go through and it never felt that the ball had dropped. 🔸 I wished there was more variety of animals and other interactable elements, environments, music... but just because the experience was fun start to end. For those wanting more, there are collectible hats, which I encourage to go find, as it's there where the most 'aha' moments are. 🔸 My experience with Mistified started during the early access and sadly many bugs were still present by the 1.0, mainly visual glitches and some things not loading properly. On the flip side, most of them have been fixed by now thanks to the devs diligence, so you won't know about that. 🔸 Mistified is a game that's very easy to understand but hard to master, due to its hidden mechanics. With a very cute art and a medium to hard difficulty, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a game mixing sokoban puzzles, a bit of exploration and some light rule discovery. POSITIVES: 🙂+ art 😄+ 😍+ collectibles NEGATIVES: 🙁- bugs 😠- 😡- 🔷 Find more puzzle games here 👇 https://www.youtube.com/@Mael_Duin
