In a word, compared to fighting and exploration, the platform jumping elements are somewhat overly tedious. So if you don't like platform jumping, please be cautious to purchase. When I played MIO for 10h, I thought this is a WONDERFUL game. The art style is impressive and unique, with excellent cel-shading. The map design is also good, in a DARKSOUL-like loop-type, so any effort to explore the map is worthwhile. Moreover, the worldview is very immersive. Most importantly, MIO has excellent mobility, moving as if on flat ground across any terrain. BUT, WHAT IS THE COST? When I played MIO for 20h+, I have been trapped by hundreds of thousands of millions of endless JUMPPING CHALLENGES. They are everywhere, getting in way of everything. I have to say that these challenges are mostly well-designed, and even though they cost much time, I can pass them through some practice. HOWEVER, my immersion in the world and joy in exploring the map have turned into resentment towards the challenges. Now I just want to fxxk them off and enjoy the rest of the part of MIO.
SPOILER Alert! I really wanted to like this game! The art style is amazing, the music is awe inspiring and very memorable. The setting is such magic. One is curious to find out more about this world. Some of the early and mid-game bosses, and all of the endgame-Bosses are AMAZING, truly are. In general, there a not a lot of bad fights. BUT! Some of the pacing of the game is very .. unfortunate. The middle part, especially in the vaults, was suuuch a drag, that sometimes I didn't even feel like finishing the game over it. This is then contrasted and complimented by the fact, that the last couple of hours leading up to the secret ending are, once again, soo good! And also provide context to a story I didn't rly follow up untill then (and honestly didn't really get to care about up until that point). I mean what a great finale and plosttwist having to fight Shii! Why was not more of the game like this?? And mostly, of course, I have problems with the platforming. Big surprise, there's platforming in a Metroidvania game. I know. It's also very difficult at times (looking at you Crucible, even though I did manage get through all of it alright) Some sections were very fun and very engaging, being able to use the new tools I got and find new paths and secrets. BUT with some of the plattforming some VERY precise inputting is being expected by the game. And that's just not up to par with the controls given by the game. The hairpin seems to have a variabel range for actually hooking onto something. Sometimes there's no double jump from a wall and some of the movement just feels clunky. Why is there no faster way to get around other than having to "small warp" all the time (even though the mechanism to find out about it was very clever game design!). I very often associated the word "FRUSTRATING" with the game. It's such a shame if, after playing the game, thats' the word that remains in memory. For a game thats so beautiful and has so much love put into it.
If Hollow Knight is the tutorial for Silksong, then Silksong is the tutorial for this game—10/10, absolute shii-nema.
