About
Mini Reaper
You remember a game and a story about its development from your childhood. A classic 3D platformer that, due to strict deadlines, had to be released in an unfinished state. "Mini Reaper," a charming little spooky game about filling in for the Grim Reaper's work while he went on vacation. Shortly after its unfinished release in 1999, the company Polysoft went under and disbanded completely. You thought the game, played by few and remembered by even fewer, was completely lost media.
But then...
One day, when once again searching for any mention of the game online, you finally find something! An anonymous user named 'face' posted the game's files to a sketchy looking forum. Thankfully, you have good old PCZ64 to emulate the game with.
Note: The "game emulator," and retro game company aspects of Mini Reaper are purely fictional, and for aesthetic purposes only.
Fast-paced and tightly controlled 3D platformer gameplay

Short game that doesn’t explore the “creepypasta” genre beyond the basics. The game is presented as if it were a long-forgotten piece of software obtained from an unknown website. Although it has a distinct main menu and options that make it appear as if you're playing the game through an emulator, this does not appear in the game. The story revolves around Death, who goes on vacation and assigns you the task of gathering souls. There are thirteen of them, hidden both within and outside an old mansion. Once you've collected all of them, a doorway will open, allowing you to leave. But it won't be so simple. When you collect a few souls, you'll summon a hovering skull that will patrol the mansion and pursue you if it sees you. It spawns and disappears at random, and you never know where it will appear. It's difficult to escape because you can only jump and dash. I'm not sure how the mechanic works because the skull sometimes disappears when you look at it or when it bumps into something. While jump works well, dash is a little problematic. The mechanic claims that the longer you press it, the further you'll dash. However, this is not entirely accurate. Your character will occasionally hop a small distance regardless of how long you hold down the button. It turns out that you simply have to hold the button for less than a second. The trouble is that there is no visible clue of that perfect moment. When the skull is after you and moving quicker than you, it's quite easy to mess up the dash and get caught. Graphics are basic and blocky, which is understandable. You’ll be moving through mostly empty rooms with just basic assets, such as beds and chairs. The only "broken" moment is when you are caught. There is no game over screen, and the game just freezes. All you can do is hit Esc to reach the main menu and load two save states that begin before or immediately after the game's intro.
Nostalgia can lead us to make stupid decisions, like downloading childhood games from fishy sites...
... but buying Mini Reaper isn't a stupid decision! Mini Reaper is a tiny, N64 styled horror game that plays with the idea of exploring a haunted version of one of our beloved childhood games... and I love it! It's not perfect, but still excels in its premise. One map, one objective: Collect all 13 green souls for the Grimm Reaper because... they're on vacation. It's our duty, as the Grimm Reaper's apprentice, to fulfill this simple mission... but something is lurking in the shadows... And so, what starts as a cute little collectathon with really well hidden collectables, quickly becomes an intense yet simple horror experience, where you'll have to escape and outsmart a strange entity, hidden within the game's code. Now, into the aesthetics, which I just adore! There's a certain charm to N64 games I never get tired of. Low poly models, a slightly higher resolution than the PS1, blurry textures, and fancy yet dated effects (like the lighting and the fog); are elements I die for! And since Mini Reaper's beginning is so calm, you truly can just take it all in and enjoy. It incentivizes you get lost in the mansion: explore the basement and the attic, locate the little gardens (both inside and outside the mansion), find the bedrooms and bathrooms, dancing hall, library, astronomy room... and more! You will need this exploration though, since this entity will become ruthless near the end of the game. A semi-optimized route and good escape options will become crucial. All that adds up to an overall excellent little horror experience. Sure there are bigger and better games out there, but this game's atmosphere and movement really sell it as a brand new N64 game (or rather, a corrupted version of a childhood memory). Love it! 💜 ... also the ending is hilarious. If they removed the stupid screamer it'd be a 10/10 ending!
Incredibly fun game, lots of replayability behind its price tag. Spooks are good, atmosphere and music is wonderful, and exploration itself is very enjoyable. Highly recommend
reaper. aw man.
good
Short and sweet. Reminds me a lot of old Creepypastas like Ben Drowned. While it is a little short, the tight and smooth movement mechanics add some nice replayability which makes runs super satisfying. Looking forwards to more!
A short & sweet experience tied together with a interesting premise and fun movement which successfully pulls off its atmosphere with the excellent aesthetics and textures alongside the music
Pretty short but really fun game that has a lot of charm in it's adherence to old-school, 64-bit style platformer visuals. The movement is satisfying to get right and the game feels even better once you really click with it. Definitely going to look forward to anything more in the future!
this was a cute little game, it takes a second to actually beat, so it's actually fulfilling once you do. cute graphics and id wonder what the speedrunning community would look like for this. fun game, try it out!
