Sadly, the developer is violating the GPL, and is not releasing the source code to this as required. I opened a thread in community, which they then locked after (still) not providing the source code. As an open source developer myself, I've had to change my review to 'do not recommend' My original review: Well worth $5 if you enjoy an ORIGINAL 'Roguelike' game. It's a bit buggy (Giant White Mice and White Worm Mass spawn uncontrollably), but enjoyable.
Not personally pleased by the GPL compliance. The free UMoria online is, IMO, better.
Had to change my review to negative for one simple reason. The main gimmick for Moria over Nethack and Rogue was the ability to come back to the surface and sell/upgrade your equipment. This game does not allow you to sell the treasures you return with. This is a bad rip off, not Moria. If you want to play Moria, you'd be better off playing on the Umoria web page.
Mines of Moira: a striped down re-make with monster spawn cranked to 11, because why interact with stuff when you can kill waves of monsters! Let me begin by saying this is Moira is one of my favorite games., I started playing as a kid on floppy disks, and I still play once in a while today. This is a re-make of that game and unfortunately is extremely broken. Many features are removed from this game and that's sad considering the game had all the innovations of 1985 floppy disk. However the games real problem is the monster spawn. I'm not sure why the game design became lets spawn a monster every few rooms. The game was not designed to work this way, and it makes doing things other then fighting or playing classes that need to rest often like mages, nearly impossible to play. The removal of a lot of actions and game play just turns the game into constant grind of monster spawn and fight. You no longer have time to search for secret doors, or tunnel for treasure, and haggling for lower prices at stores, closing a door to keep from getting overrun by monsters, bashing/pushing monsters, throwing things, and a lot of other things are just removed. Some parts of the game are just different like identifying items as soon as you reach town, fewer secret doors, and other changes that are different choices but not broken. The one strong point is the ability to rewind the game in case you died from a mistake or just bad luck. This game spawns lots of monsters, and you fight lots of monster. Want to search and tunnel, no fight monsters, want to interact with things in the dungeon, why have some monsters to fight, want to cast spells that do interesting and unique things out side of combat, look more monsters. Need to rest to regenerate mana, look a monster interrupted you better cast a spell, wait no mana? Oh well time to fight. Want to walk through town getting mobbed by so many attackers that you can't walk out of a shop without getting attacked from five different directions! This remake has you covered. I may consider recommending the game if the monster spawn is fixed, it should not be sold on PC in this broken state. I will consider changing my review if the developer cares about fixing this crazy spawn rate., but for now this is a hard pass. Also some reviews mentioned the source code missing, there is a section about the source code on the web site.
Wow, this brings back memories :-)
Reliving one of the earliest games of my youth, this re-make is lovingly crafter to bring back the years and years of gaming on an old Digital PC, And yes, back then I managed to defeat the Balrog!! Today, I still remember 'some' of the controls... looking forward to pouring many houes back into this one.
Mothers will shush their children and tell them not to look as they pass by, the occasional kindly priest or do gooder will sometimes throw a few coins my way and mutter prayers to themselves wondering how one could have fallen so far, while groups of teenagers and young men will jeer and mock, throwing old tin cans and bits of rock at my head. But I shall sit serenely in my state of old school RPG nirvana, my body covered in muck and spit, but my mind drifting outside of the cares of this world, pondering the time that my party was nearly wiped and I fought off a group of enemies with just my priest, or the time when I spent minutes killing a wolf with lots of hit points, or the time when I repeatedly contemplated a giant battle to save all the Serviles because I couldn't bear to see a single of the cute little buggers get caught in the crossfire, or that bloody boss fight. In short, while physically present, I shall have passed on from this world, lost in a realm a bit higher than the real, forever and wholly beyond the fray.....or at least until the developer releases another game, anyway. Developer is very helpful and replied to my questions promptly with some informatve answers. Game seems great BUT does not really suit me I don't think. I refunded since the other games I play seem to fit my game play style better. Good luck with the game.
